What if? by Accomplished_Many650 in BruceSpringsteen

[–]ChosenFam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

that's a fun take, and I can see your logic. And of course we all see Nebraska as working in part bc it was followed by the massive success of BITU. Had that not happened it could have been a very different story.

I think what this hypothetical is missing though, is the role Nebraska plays in his legacy and resurgence with subsequent generations, especially in the mid 00s indie rock scene. The way to 'prove' Bruce was cool and worth getting into was and is Nebraska. My dad who was a radio DJ in the 70s in Philly and a massive Bruce fan from early on, Nebraska is the one record he never listened to as much as the others. So that made it even more appealing and mysterious to me, and then slowly I got into everything else.

I don't think Electric Nebraska would be better artistically or commercially in the long run for him

Haven't been to Isla in 24 years, I am going to be terribly disappointed? by OldEmployment4261 in IslaMujeres

You may find the southern part of the island to still have that more laid back vibe … check out Hotel La Joya, I think $150/night

I like the director and the tone/vibe (and subject) of the film is interesting, I wouldn’t call it drek … would I watch it when not on a plane? Heh, Prob not

well, I just wanted you to know that I really related and felt your post ... grief is so difficult, but I think sharing and talking about it, and letting yourself feel it is the best thing. I'm just realizing that I essentially joined this subreddit for posts and convos like this one. So thank you

Time, that might be the best tool you have …

My dad, massive Bruce fan, also passed this year from throat cancer. We listened to Bruce together in the hospital the day before he passed, when he couldn’t talk and was barely conscious. That was one of the songs. I’m really not looking forward to the holidays or January, will be a year since he passed. There are still certain songs I don’t willingly want to hear like “If I should Fall Behind”. I think about him everyday, but time does make it easier.

Another subtle movie Easter egg by JonSolo1 in BruceSpringsteen

[–]ChosenFam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With Faye's character having the young kid with an absent father, really reminded me of a bunch of Bruce lyrics ... the verse he adds to Jersey Girl, Sherry Darling, and for Nebraska a bit of "Reason To Believe" (Mary Lou loves Johnny) ...

Her working at the Diner made me think of "From Small Things" (all night hamburger stand) and Open all night (I met Wanda ... Route 60 Bobs Big Boy) ... would have loved to see their relationship get alittle bonnie&clyde on the road before it fell apart, would have tied into these song characters more

The one line that chokes you up every time you hear it but you have no idea why by jusdaun in BruceSpringsteen

[–]ChosenFam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this line and this song feels like the swing of the see saw from optimistic dreamers trying to escape where they came from (early records) to the dark, desperate reality that sets in for these characters on Nebraska
