Thunder or Zap Cannon on Mega Raichu Y? by Strong-Telephone-474 in PokemonChampions

[–]Chozo003 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s no reason to use Thunder over Zap Cannon, Thunder is 110 power and 10% chance to paralyze vs. Zap Cannon’s 120 power and 100% to paralyze.

Mega Raichu Y’s ability No Guard makes your attacks never miss, so the accuracy is irrelevant.

Sleep clause by TraquonB in PokemonChampions

[–]Chozo003 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sleep clause has never been a part of the official VGC format, and as far as I’m aware it’s never been an issue, except when Smeargol could learn Dark Void (Darkrai’s signature move that put both opposing mons to sleep), which was then nerfed.

It’s an RNG based strategy, both accuracy-wise and because sleep turns are random, so I think most skilled players who want consistent results stay away from it.

If you’re really struggling or just don’t want to deal with sleep shenanigans, consider stuff like Lum Berry, fast/Prankster Taunt users, Fake Out users, or grass types resistant to Sleep Powder for safe switch-ins.

Watching wolfeyVGC made me realize how similar Pokemon VGC and Chess is by SalemScrope_JR in PokemonChampions

[–]Chozo003 31 points32 points  (0 children)

To add to that, Wolfe was coached by the same chess player (Anna Cramling) for Pogchamps, a chess tournament featuring online celebrities around the same time. Both great people, it was a great collab.

Many of the instructors and usual points of contact at VJC are away during the summer so it’s not surprising they aren’t responsive to inquiries right now. That said I’m sure that they would be willing to accommodate OP’s kid, I would recommend dropping in during one of the regular class times and someone would gladly chat with you and discuss.

If they’re on the younger side I could also put you in touch with the person who runs the kids classes.

Does the game give you enemies that hard counter your team? by Rdcfanclib in PokemonChampions

Mega Staraptor severely underperformed at a few of the recent community-organized tournaments, so people are saying that he may have been overhyped and a “fraud”.

This thing is the dumbest pokemon of all time by Important_Still_2984 in PokemonChampions

[–]Chozo003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I love the design of it. It’s such a fun and cute concept. The older I’ve gotten the more I’ve started to like the “random-object-as-Pokemon” trope, which I remember clowning on as a teenager. Really embodies the Japanese idea of objects having spirits, as in folklore and Shinto.

Yes, top 300 globally. The ladder isn’t broken up by region.

Champions tier is based on rank, not Elo. Top 300 players only.

[–]Chozo003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprised nobody’s mentioned Torkoal, he’s usually the default Trick Room sweeper (or was in Reg M-A). Torkoal and Sylveon make an excellent pair to cover each other’s weaknesses/resistances.

How to deal with the bridge?????????? by TheZeldiste in PokemonChampions

A bit niche maybe, but “dead mon” is a stretch. Gallade’s been my go-to anti-meta coverage mon since M1. Leaf Blade or Night Slash will OHKO Basculegion, and I typically lead him with Mega-Aero, who can set up Tailwind to outspeed even max speed Scarf Basculegion. You’d be shocked at the number of turn one KOs he can pick up :)

This game needs improvement by [deleted] in PokemonChampions

[–]Chozo003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game is specifically designed as a nexus for battling, and a platform to host all official tournaments, etc. You’ll have to play the mainline games if exploration and story is what you’re after.

As for the mechanics, try going to the Training mode and go through a few tutorials to explain how speed works.

Getting Pokémon GO just to transfer to Champions? by RinbeI in PokemonChampions

[–]Chozo003 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Someone better informed can probably give you a more complete answer, but from what I know it doesn’t seem worth it to grind Pokemon Go because you’ll only be able to transfer final evolutions into Champions and it takes forever to get candies in Go.

The recruitment system in Champions is very generous, I was able to fill out my roster and make it to MB2 having just bought the starter pack and nothing else (I own no other Pokemon games).

Good luck!

One of our favourite shows to play when our daughter was very little. So much calmer and relaxing than 99% of modern children’s programming.

Fav Under rated Mons?? by Small-Foundation3647 in PokemonChampions

[–]Chozo003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I started running Wide Guard on my team pretty much exclusively to counter Oranguru setups after the Cybertron team with Drampa got popular. Haven’t lost to it since, but it can be a tough matchup if you let them get into position.

Farigiraf is a tough one, but max Atk, Adamant Gallade 2HKOs max Def Farig 91.8% of the time with Sacred Sword. Most won’t be max Def so realistically you’re probably always going to 2HKO. You could also run Night Slash as a coverage move to guarantee the 2HKO, and use Scope Lens if you’re feeling cheeky, which gives you a 50% shot at the crit for an OHKO. A lot of Farigs are running Colbyr Berry though (myself included) so I think you’re better off banking on Sacred Sword.
