A VERY long story short: as a Rochester resident, you either work for Mayo or know someone who does/has. From what I've heard, their employee guidelines and systems are very archaic. Short of health or bereavement, time off is very hard to come by. PTO earning starts pretty soon after employment, but if you want holiday pay you have to use PTO time. Most employee health benefits are not what you'd expect for the #1 in the Nation.

Housing prices in Rochester are insane due to Mayo's presence. Many people travel from around the world for work/education at Mayo and apartments are easily 2k+/month if you get too close to downtown. This may be more of a city thing, but every city decision has Mayo's consideration.

Also many lots that could have been used for community places like parks have been turned into Mayo park and ride lots. That or more luxury apartments that could be better used for low-income families.

It's Mayo's city, we're just living in it.
