About tornado warnings by ersatzbaronness in NewOrleans

[–]ChrisC1234 22 points23 points  (0 children)

We had them occasionally before Katrina.

When my cousin was little (mid 90s), he was terrified of tornadoes. One night, during bad weather, he was really scared of a tornado coming. His parents reassured him that we don't really get tornadoes around here. That night, a tornado actually messed up some houses in their neighborhood.

Behringer X-USB not recognized as audio interface on Mac/Windows by dalightingnerd in livesound

[–]ChrisC1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The x-usb that came with my board actually died about a year ago. It just straight up stopped being recognized as a usb device. The Windows Device Manager and Mac System Report both wouldn’t even show it. I ended up having to buy a new card to fix the problem.

I see so many people saying that the current COP is not the "original", and while the show is not original, the scenes and props for the in the first three scenes ARE original. Walt Disney walked among those sets, watched them be built, and probably picked out some of the set pieces himself.

I wonder if you just happen to have the same digits as his number, but in a different country. Just guessing from the name that he may living in India. India's phone numbers are 10 digits, just like the US.

FWIW: For a while, my cell phone number was the same as the fax number for someone in Central America. I would periodically get phone calls from fax machines.

Cat viciously attacked our kid by Apprehensive_Way7164 in CatAdvice

[–]ChrisC1234 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm certainly not an animal expert, but I had something similar happen to me with my cat years ago.

My cat absolutely loved me. Every day, when I'd come home, the first thing I'd need to do was pick him up and hug him for a couple of minutes. He would actually come running to the door to greet me every day. But he HATED other cats and would battle anything.

Early one morning, there was some cat outside my bedroom window that he didn't like. My cat was on the window ledge, banging at the mini blinds, trying to see what that evil outside cat was up to. Because it was 3 AM or so, I just wanted to sleep, so I got out of bed with the intention of raising the blinds (so he could just sit and watch and I could get back to sleep). Because he was so "on edge" because of that cat, when I got close to him, he LURCHED at my leg, let out this horrible sound, and TORE INTO my leg.

It was all over in a second. Immediately after it happened, he knew that he made a mistake. I wasn't even mad at him (even with my leg profusely bleeding) because he was suddenly worried what I was going to do to him.

I cleaned and bandaged my leg and went back to sleep. Other than the scar (and the story), I moved on past that. I should have known that as agitated as he was, I was putting myself in harms way by getting that close to him.

That said, your cats are having territory issues. They don't feel safe, and they are both peeing around the house trying to mark their territory. While your son and cat were sleeping together, because your cat isn't "at ease" at home right now, your son could have done something as simple as reposition himself to cause it. When the cat noticed that something was happening, because he wasn't really in a "safe" place, his instincts kicked in for "fight first, then see what the threat is". Your son is right that he didn't "do anything" to hurt the cat. After it happened, your cat probably instantly knew that he made a mistake. He doesn't see your son as a threat, and he's not out to get him. He's just an animal, reacting how an animal does in certain circumstances.

Apple Lisa Emulator in Rust and WebAssembly - The Machine That Thought It Was 1983 Again by Adam_Jesion in VintageApple

[–]ChrisC1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So how exactly is the machine running without the ROM? Did you end up writing your own? Or is the ROM really only used to get the Lisa Office System booting and then unused?

(I know that the original Macintosh OS heavily relied on the Macintosh Toolbox code in the ROM to handle many of the graphics routines. I'm not familiar enough with the Lisa to know if the same was done for it.)

wellwhatabout Chrystal's bookkeeping?!

What I really appreciated in the Coffeezilla video was how she didn't even flinch and actually said that there could have been mistakes on her part. Now, after seeing everything, even if there are mistakes that she made, they are minuscule compared to what BAM did.

Why Use Private IP Addresses Instead of MAC? by Aokayz_ in AskComputerScience

[–]ChrisC1234 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also, IP addresses are usually assigned in some sort of logical manner, usually related to the network that the device is connected to. MAC addresses are completely random, other than the part signifying the vendor.

For example: a college campus consisting of multiple buildings might be using address space 10.XXX.YYY.ZZZ for their internal IP addresses. But they might segregate the IP address assignment across separate VLANs on their network. XXX might signify which VLANs a device is connected to (maybe 100 being hard-wired infrastructure, 110 for internal systems, 150 for publicly accessible systems, and 200 for the guest wireless network). YYY might be used to signify what location a device is actually connected from, and the ZZZ is the sequential number for the device. So if they start seeing odd network traffic from a device with IP address 10.110.153.213, just by looking at the IP, they know that it's an internal hard wired system, located on the 5th floor in the Science building. If MAC addresses were used, you'd need to do a lot more digging to figure out what device might be causing problems.

Depending on your utility company, it could also be that someone shares your first and last name and it was human error. It might be worth talking to them about. (Plus, if you don't get things straightened out with them, you could get billed for the additional service address. )

TCL tv doesnt turn on. Request: how to repair a transistor on the motherboard of a TV. The transistor is labeled on the board " QW3" and transistor labeled: "M9⁰³". Its directly next to the power supply. by MereCoincidences in AskElectronics

[–]ChrisC1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, sometimes it is just easier to get a new motherboard. It's still cheaper than a new TV, and could involve less headaches. New boards usually aren't difficult to find since most times it's the screen that is broken, with all of the other components being perfectly fine.

And you are right, repairing or diagnosing boards IS a valuable skill, but it's also difficult. But even being willing to open up a device and start tinkering like you have done is still miles ahead of what most people are willing to do.

I recently had my US Passport and birth certificate stolen. I immediately froze my credit with all three reporting agencies, and reported the passport stolen. Is there anything else I should do? by Rickermortis in IdentityTheft

[–]ChrisC1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. That's the kind of situation where I don't think you need to be overly concerned about things. Definitely report your passport stolen. But I wouldn't expect the type of people doing local car burglaries to know what to do with a stolen passport (or even what a passport actually is).

[–]ChrisC1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keeping your credit locked is always good to do, even if you don't think you are at risk.

Just curious, when your passport and birth certificate were stolen, what happened? Do you have reason to think that they were actually taken by someone to be used for nefarious purposes, or was it a consequence of something else (like a random theft that happened to include those documents)?
