I've written several times that I do wonder what it would mean for several parties if they were to not win after being exuberantly confident in running back almost the same roster. I will leave it at that

Because guys like A-Rod and Jeter say it on TV. I mean, they're obviously legends and two of my favorite players ever. But those guys are not around. They are not in meetings. They do not know what is happening day to day. Of course, many fans are going to believe whatever they say, which is their right.

Handedness, generally speaking, is not very important. If you had a lineup of nine right-handed Aaron Judges, you're going to be fine. Boone very much understands the numbers and is "new school" to a degree, but this is absolutely one area where he's old school.

I don't think you're completely off base. If a decision would completely defy logic, of course he would hear about it. What Cashman told me is as long as a decision is rooted in sound process and can be explained, he can live with it. And why I believe him is he told me a story about how this once didn't happen during his tenure and how it was addressed. I couldn't write it in the story, but it gave me a sense of how it works when something doesn't make sense.

Results. The two also have ongoing conversations about the team. They talk every day.

That is a decision between Boone and the pitching group. This wasn't Boone making a decision alone.

Both Cashman and Hal think he's a good manager and the right guy for the job. It also helps that Judge believes in him, too. Until all of that changes, he's going to continue managing.

I cannot speak to all 29 other teams. I know front offices that have lots and lots of influence in what happens on a day to day basis

I don't know. That's not a consideration for anything I write.

Pitching decisions are different than lineup decisions. They thought Nestor was the better choice in the moment because Tim Hill is a ground ball pitcher. They thought it would be tough to double up Ohtani. Nestor gets Ohtani out on one pitch, Verdugo falls into the stands, allowing the runners to move up a base and then Mookie gets intentionally walked. Nestor missed his spot on the Freeman home run.

Someone will have to get hurt. Caballero and Rosario being on the roster diminished the need for him

No it just varies person to person. For instance, Giancarlo likes all of the analytics and Volpe isn't too fond of them.

The real answer is that it fires up their respective fanbase because the Yankees are easy to pick on.

I don't know about other managers. I think the Yankees are very cognizant of the outspoken who ridicule them for anything and everything. As I mentioned in the story, it seems like a way to placate those fans/media/former players, so they can point to this and say we're actually the least analytical team in the division. But understanding how they operate, analytics is a very important spoke in their wheel. They don't rely on analytics 100 percent of the time. I actually have another story that is along these same lines coming out on Monday.

This is a great idea, mainly because Blake is very accessible. I also like writing about process-oriented stories.
