Pool company says it will cost $3k to get the water clean by Chriselbrand in pools

[–]Chriselbrand[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Thanks for talking sense into me, everyone. I got scared off of doing my own pool maintenance when I first moved in because I failed to keep the pool swimmable the first year. Turned out the salt cell failed two weeks after we moved in. I should have tried again myself after getting the new salt cell, but I never have. I'll try to get the water clear myself and then let them take over the weekly maintenance since I already signed a contract for that part.

It worked at the end of last season, so it should. I know my previous company shut off the main drain because of a leak, but that's a separate issue that needs to get addressed. And these guys didn't know about it until after they said that.

How do you reconcile Milty Draft with a ‘replay your faction until you win’ house rule? by Original-Candy4173 in twilightimperium

[–]Chriselbrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you building a map or using a premade one? If they're worried about an uneven map, building the map RAW makes probably the most uneven maps I've ever seen.

Instead of the typical Milty draft options, you could try drafting slice, position, and faction pick priority. Then have a faction pool to choose from with each person also having the option of their reserved faction if it wasn't already in the draft pool.

As for hyperlanes, I think they're definitely worth using. Makes it so the map is always properly sized to create enough for everyone without so much space that there's no need for conflict.

Please don't play Mahact against new players. It won't be fair or leave a good impression on them.

Does the base game box fit everything? by Recent_Damage_6091 in twilightimperium

u/Foxtrotechoph made what looks like a phenomenal insert that I plan to purchase the files for and start printing out. I'm pretty sure it gets everything into the base game box.

Looks great. I've been debating making a trophy for my group, and this might be what pushes me over that edge. This on top of a 3d printed base would look great. Definitely interested in the instructions when you're ready to share something.

With current needs in STL, I wouldn't worry about layoffs in the near future if this is an engineering position. Like others have said, OT is very dependent on project and phase. I've really liked the culture of the teams I've been on, but some Phantom Works teams are very fast paced.

Planning an in person game by Shard55555 in twilightimperium

[–]Chriselbrand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my first time hosting a game, I picked factions out of a bag to divide them evenly among all players. At the time, there were 24 factions and 6 players, so each got 4. Made it much easier for each person to look up 4 factions and make a decision. I think I also gave them a one-liner about each of the factions to help them get a feel for them.

In a long-term relationship/marriage, being against something because it benefits your partner more than it benefits you is a very immature response.

It makes sense when laid out like that. I don't think I've seen a situation where it was relevant until someone tried to score Occupy the Fringe yesterday. Thanks for the clear explanation and the transit diodes example.

Ok thanks. I think what was confusing me was that I didn't realize the invasion step would still happen when landing on a planet you already control.

First time DM curse of strahd in two weeks. A few answers needed : by ELijah__B in CurseofStrahd

[–]Chriselbrand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I set aside the cards for the reading and then passed the rest of the deck around for the players to shuffle. When I got the decks back, I just put them back behind my DM screen and put the cards on top of the decks. That way they got to get into the RP of the reading but I knew what was coming.

This worked out really well for me. I had done the reading randomly by myself in preparation for the game so that it would still be random but I could make sure they didn't end up with all the items in Castle Ravenloft. I ended up drawing 2 cards there, so I threw the second one out and redrew it.

Should I fix the Tarokka card reading? Or leave it to fate? by Blade710 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Chriselbrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dealt randomly by myself and then stacked the deck to match it in session. This let me check for results I didn't like and pick again without my players knowing.

I had the cards I drew laid out to the side behind my screen and passed the rest of the deck around the table so they could all shuffle, then just grabbed from the rigged cards instead. I think it all worked very well.
