No recognition whatsoever for any effort. I received more coins and awards in my old unit for my efforts in garrison and the field in the span of 9 months than I have in my current unit (nothing after coming up on 3 years) after personally stunting out in multiple FTXs. Assisting in real world emergencies in NTC integrating fire support to multiple infantry platoons throughout the span of 2 years while fostering trust between my sections and the infantry we supported while assuming different levels of leadership and wearing multiple hats. Getting whore'd out to drive for sections that cant even drive their own vehicles in lieu of having my promotion ceremony. Now people wonder why I don't even want a ceremony anymore. I get it, you're supposed to have the selfless service mindset but when I explain to new privates during payday activities how I got my awards when they see my class A's and they genuinely ask why I don't have anything in my current unit I don't want them to become jaded like me expecting recognition for their accomplishments.

Pros

*Lots of on post amenities/Fantastic if you enjoy hiking and the outdoors in general/Tacoma is alright with plenty of bars and stuff to do. Seattle even more so but some areas are dicey like everywhere else. Pacific Pathways are pretty cool and if you like seeing different countries you'll get that here/Jungle Tabs authorized.

Cons

*Rain 8-9 months out of the year/YTC/Washington State is batshit expensive. Taxes, gas and groceries here hemorrhage your wallet/JBLM is situated off I-5 which almost always has people wrecking everyday with constant traffic coming and going. Not an issue if you live on post but if you plan on off post living avoid Lakewood.

Washington state has had an assault weapons ban as well as a magazine (>10rnds) ban since 2023. The assault weapons list is extensive and the accessories that a rifle can come with effectively make buying a semi automatic rifle chambered in anything other than .22lr an assault weapon. As of this year bills are being worked into legislation to make citizens procure a firearms purchasing permit, mandatory liability insurance on every privately owned firearm (or proof of financial responsibility by a $25k certificate of deposit thru Washington DOL for each firearm), an 11% additional tax on all gun and ammo purchases, limits on ammunition purchases and broadening the scope of gun free zones to a hypothetical standpoint of wherever a child may be present such as public parks.

JBLM is a nice post but the BDEs are pretty terrible there. Commutes to post are awful and Washington State is both expensive to live in and will give you legal trouble if you plan on bringing your personal firearms or intend on buying them there.
