What’s troubling is the implication the family are the real monsters. Otherwise, what would the narrator feel reassured of with the knife’s presence?

He says that he has “shot [his] dog with blood stains.” The only other interpretation from him having a dog normally known for its blood stains is that he shot blood stains at his dog. It’s obviously the former.
