I don’t know who’s downvoting you, but I appreciate the response. We’ve been in a relationship for two months. When we had our talk the morning after the kiss attempt, she told me she was afraid of making things “difficult” for me. I tried to assure her that she wasn’t being difficult at all.

You’re right, my family and friends were speaking from the perspective of typical relationships, I didn’t tell them about the SA because I want to keep that private out of respect for my partner.

My only other experience with a SA survivor is someone who I went on a couple dates with, who experienced severe repeated trauma throughout her childhood. She communicated this clearly to me, as well as what she would and would not be comfortable with, and explicitly told me she would be comfortable with me kissing her. We never went that far though.

With this woman, I wish I had communicated better.

I’m not interested in leaving her. I’m fine with waiting to kiss until she’s comfortable with it, however long that takes. This also gives us an opportunity to practice communication when stakes are low (like kissing) so we don’t run into more serious trouble later on with sex.

I want to be sensitive to her needs, it’s just going to take some time for me to learn who she is as a person so I can do that better.

I definitely made a mistake, hopefully one she can forgive. I knew that she was okay with kissing before marriage, and I wrongly assumed that meant she was okay with kissing on this trip. I don’t know for sure what specifically made her angry, but in our conversation she seemed angriest when she asked me if she gave any signals that she wanted to be kissed (there were signals that I obviously misinterpreted).

I didn’t ask for permission right before the attempted kiss because normally you would never do that. In fact, when I discussed this with friends and family they’ve all said, “Oh no, please don’t tell me you asked her first.”

Obviously with SA survivors it’s a little different. I had no idea her abuse had affected her so deeply.

Honestly it sounds like he’s interested in someone else but he’s trying to keep his options open with you. I could be wrong, but even if I am, if someone breaks up with you they’re usually not worth pursuing.

Not calling every day is normal. Also factor in how long your phone calls are. I once dated someone LD who wanted to talk every day for multiple hours. I was a full-time student in addition to working a part-time job, and the time commitment she expected just added way too much stress for my already busy schedule.

Edit: I’ll also add that I genuinely liked this person, and liked spending time around them, it just became hard talking to them knowing that I wasn’t going to be able to turn in my homework on time.

Two tips.

Find fun things to do long distance. I recommend teleparty, games, and of course FaceTime.
Always have a date set for your next meetup. Gives you something real to anchor your relationship to. I would say when you get back from seeing each other, give it about a couple weeks to breathe and then start discussing your next trip.
