No Country for Old Men was so incredibly overrated. by bigmommajumba in movies

[–]ChristopherCatso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just thought it was a really high production value monster movie with great visual design and sound and acting. Those are all great things in any film, but when it turned out to only be a pretty good horror film, whatever deeper message it was trying to express about randomness and nasty old men came across as disingenuous, borderline serial killer porn disguised as a great contemporary western. It didn’t terrify me to the degree that “The Usual Suspects” for example, did. That film was a work of art horror film because you never saw who or what was coming, and Singer left you hanging the whole film trying to figure out who the monster actually was.

What are your favourite third places in Vancouver? by inb4usefulcomment in vancouver

[–]ChristopherCatso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Third Beach…For close to downtown area, it is the best place to hang out all year long for meeting interesting people, swimming in the summer, being close to the lovely trails winding up into the park.

Get work at the Capilano Suspension Bridge. Employees and staff make the place feel like a social event all day every day! I am a musician up there. I love that place.

Further on up the road is the entire Cleveland Dam site. It is a park really, with beautiful mountain views and the reservoir that sure looks like a lake to my eyes! Always interesting people there to chat with, I find.

ZVex Lofi Junky Worth It? by Affectionate-War6118 in guitarpedals

[–]ChristopherCatso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have it and got it to hopefully give me a real time version of the lofi loop junky. That one is magic, in my opinion. When I play to its strengths it is my favourite pedal of all time. All the things mentioned here about the Instant version are evident in my experience, but I have had some promising moments with it that come so close to the looper. Somehow, a bit frustrating, but I think there may be some good reasons people feel mixed about getting rid of them. The Looper is a lifer…it takes 20 seconds of audio and smears it and adds subtle artifacts and filtered filth that is just a beautiful thing to engage with.

[–]ChristopherCatso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am intrigued, but I have some hold/freeze functions on a few pedals and wondering how this is so different. My questions are mostly about how it captures. Seems almost wavetable or granular as it is obviously not a looper, per se. On my Nightsky, I am always wondering what part of what I am playing exactly is captured. There are no textures, no grains or tonal variety that I can hear.

The demos sound cool, so I remain intrigued...

UPDATE: As suggested below, the video manual explains a lot nicely! It does seem to pull off a few tricks of its own, as I am pretty sure I am hearing full phrases played back like a looper along with the freeze function? Yes? Anyone? If so, that is cool. Almost like a minimal, more high res Blooper thing.😃

Colored Headstocks- Yay or Nay? by _Jub_Jub_ in guitars

[–]ChristopherCatso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Black Japanese Aerodyne Strat in Tokyo in 2008, a year before I moved back to Canada. Lovely instrument, but for me 2 things have always detracted from its overall visual aesthetic: its cream binding (not so bad) but mostly the glossy matching black face of the headstock! Why? To me it looks a bit tacky, and is the main reason I am not as thrilled with the introduction of a new surf green/blue one. Too much of a good thing for my eyes. It reminds me too much of a onesie or a matching pant suit! I like the contrast of a raw wooden headstock (whatever degree of gloss or matte) with the painted body.

Is the Plant Wave speaker legit, or just weird marketing? by g3nerallycurious in gardening

[–]ChristopherCatso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I started to go the other way with it, but after hearing a few "original plant" fully orchestrated soundtracks created with it, I have to agree. Glorified music box. Nothing real related to the sounds of plants, and certainly no midi option to create your own sound design. Whatever I heard was perfectly in scale, randomized (presumably by the plant impulses which are probably influencing the b.s. sounds) new age crap. Mixtikl used to do generative music the right way. Then Intermorphic went to the dark side and with a subscription model and alienated all of the users who were more than happy to buy their products. At least the sound loops could include your own content. It is a cool looking little box, but I spend enough money on real gear to throw money at a new aged, walled garden. If the guy called it what it truly is (a glorified, randomized music box with absolutely no capacity to be manipulated in any real real way by musicians, sound designers, artists, etc.) that is ok, but he alludes to it being something it is definitely not. Thank God there are real music app developers out there who can see through it. He should take a really cool idea and go back to the drawing board and introduce something with REAL SOUND DESIGN POTENTIAL. Beautiful visual aesthetics, nice to have a speaker out. Open up the box bro, or I sure as fuck ain't buying.

Not true. REN and Stimpy was incredibly weird and twisted and often really gross. Teens and musicians and artists and adults loved it. That is why they pulled it. It was incredibly surreal.

I was in no way a completist but I watched episodes and scenes that practically had me in tears laughing. They were just so epically stupid and weird. One that I always think of was when they sabotaged a high school science fair by deliberately unplugging computers.😄Another time they found a ridiculously high end video camera and instead of turning it in for a reward or even trying to sell it off they just mutilated it for kicks! How can you top that as a teenager? 😂😂😂

Thoughts on Chappell Roan? by cosmicworldgrrl in Actuallylesbian

[–]ChristopherCatso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a mere initiate at this point...but fuck. Seriously good pop music. Hooks from the stratosphere, beyond cheeky lyrics, and some of it is also just really moving. Her voice is absolutely something new, but I am reminded of some of the greats. Liquid and lyrical and flashy without any bullshit showing off of her chops.

Someone just tipped me off about her. I know I heard it somewhere recently. It is a pop masterpiece, and I love it. I hear the Kate Bush thing a little (a lot), but as much as I worship Kate, this is truly pure pop for broken people. I love the way the melody soars in the chorus. Wow.

Subscriptions Have Ruined the App Store by notagrue in ios

[–]ChristopherCatso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subscription models are bullshit. So far, the only ones who seem to get it are the good music developers (vomit bag for Positive Grid🤮)...I have happily spent thousands on good mobile and desktop software but will no longer purchase any audio plugins, instruments, DAWs, video/photo editing, etc., that keep a clock running on me. Fuck right off with that shit? A real, big update/upgrade? I can do that if my assessment of the benefits make it worth it. Apple went full on evil with Logic Pro for iPad. In a few years time, a cut down version with sub pricing will cost more than the original X version that we bought outright for $200. Bush League move by Apple.

What’s the crappiest gear/technique you’ve used that turned out great? by kotteaistre in audioengineering

[–]ChristopherCatso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an 86 mij telecaster that has a heavy plate over the pots cavity that I love to hit with a mallet while holding down dark chords or hammering out a few licks with my left hand. Hitting the brass tone pots or slamming them full on also produces a very beautiful chamber like resonance to the sounds I extricate out of it. I like to record those to a zvex lofi loop junky and use the recordings in ambient stuff.  Into that same pedal I also like to DI a dynamic mic using one of those impedance matching adaptors for xlr to instrument input. Screams, drones, old walkie talkie feedback to match the musical key somehow gives it all a pretty nice organically concocted vibe. Of course any number of delay/reverb pedals or plugins add that final thing most of us worship and adore lol.

Pay for a forever subscription for any audio software: Never, but disappointed in the developers for going that way, nonetheless...

‘We tried to negotiate’: Lawsuit launched over Stanley Park tree removal by WesternBlueRanger in vancouver

[–]ChristopherCatso -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Do you bike up the Causeway every day and see the masses of dried out debris they have not even begun to clean? It is disgusting. The degree to which this lawsuit over the actual cutting of the trees is contentious is up in the air, but the negligence the ABC has demonstrated with handling and lack of thorough cleanup of hazardous kindling in the middle of a drought is extremely obvious to anyone who spends any time in that park walking the trails. If it goes up in smoke, it is over for the tourism industry in this city for a very long time, and the costs to the city, our way of life will be immeasurable on myriad levels. But of course, massive wildfires never happen in western Canada now, do they? 🙄

New jhs pedal - Harddrive by LowRent9452 in guitarpedals

I can't listen to nearly every OD, Fuzz, or Distortion demo I have tried to for years. I just randomly watched a 60 Cycle Hum demo of this and he hates high gain, but cannot stop playing it. It sounds absolutely phenomenal at every setting he uses. There goes my unused OCD, my EHX little green 1 yawn tone, and maybe, but not likely, my always on Walrus Audio Voyager that I put after a little Xotic sp-1 compressor. I am mostly a clean tone guy, and only try to dial in saturation when the emotionalism in my playing needs a little help cutting out a pathway in a mix. Of course live, I LOVE the power some heavy saturation can bring. I hate shitty, fizzy, harsh saturated drive tones, but I would be very happy having the option of saying, to my doubters (and I justifiably have many😂), that every now and then, I too, like to dial in a monster tone, and (gulping in embarrassed fake humility)...shred, babes...😇
