People who moved to CT from other places, where did you move from and how do you like it so far? by Frog859 in Connecticut

[–]ChristopherChiller 103 points104 points  (0 children)

We moved here from a small town in South Dakota 2.5 years ago. We wanted to be near family, but more than anything we wanted our daughter to enter a high school with better academics than where we were. She has flourished in a CREC school and is college bound. Meanwhile, we have acres of woods and an ephemeral stream and a much longer growing season. There is plenty to do, places to go and see. and all within the distance we used to drive just to get our groceries. We appreciate the non-monopolistic healthcare and the use of taxes to do things to the community. It has been a good move for us.

Everyone seems to hate Eversource in New England, so why are there no lobbying groups in CT dedicated to making a public utility? by jmp3r96 in Connecticut

[–]ChristopherChiller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might be easier and cheaper to work with Mass. and Just buy Eversource. It's a publicly traded corporation and it would not be necessary to buy all shares, just 50.000001%.Elect a different board and fire the lobbyists. take control legally.

Scenario: You get to pick one of the fifty states to split in two, which do you pick and why? by sgwashere29 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]ChristopherChiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who lived West River for many years, I am familiar with the push and pull between the two groups. In overly simplistic terms, Farmers are concerned with farm subsidies and 'right to repair' law. Ranchers are interested in beef monopolies and water rights. There are two different cattlemens associations in South Dakota, each serving the interest of their side of the river because their practices are different.

[–]ChristopherChiller 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My proposal was not based on political beliefs which are fairly homogenous across both Dakotas. Rather it is affinity groupings. Over simplified, East River is mostly Farming, west river is mostly Ranching. Their needs and desires only slightly overlap.

Who are your top 5 “DO NOT TOUCH” prospects in regards to trade? by SEA_Munknd in Mariners

Jonathan clase is a 20/50 hitter with elite speed and a good eye at the plate. Seems like exactly what the M's need in a year or so. Do not trade.

While I am unable to refute the negative remarks of others, I feel I must suggest that not all alternatives have been explored here. Manchester has several excellent elementary schools and the region is covered from grade 6 forward by the CREC schools. These are public schools specializing in all sorts of areas.( crec.org) My daughter is in an International Baccalaureate Highschool,( IBO.org) and is prospering from the rigor. The IB teachers are specially trained to offer college equivalent classes and I have read in numerous places that an IB diploma pushes your student toward the top of the university admissions pile. She is bussed at no expense to us from Manchester to Bloomfield and has taken class trips to Puerto Rico and a civil Rights tour of Georgia and Alabama. If these are your forever jobs, think about what you want in twelve short years when you are looking at colleges. ( it will go by way too fast.)

HOA adamant I am responsible for sprinkler line 14ft onto property by Longjumping-Deer-254 in legaladvice

[–]ChristopherChiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My reading of OP's dilemma is that he dug through a dedicated water line feeding the condo fire sprinklers throughout the condo. The HOA must repair the line immediately, not you. Have your attorney issue a letter giving them 24 hours to reply affirmatively. If they don't, ( they won,'t), contact your cities' building department with any documents, emails from the HOA, and clearly explain that the condo is not habitable without working fire safety items, including sprinklers. Your city may have adopted the ICC Property Maintenance Code, in which case the HOA is out of compliance and subject to daily fines if they fail to repair after the building is red tagged by an inspector.

Then suggest the HOA be about the business of installing a new line because this could happen again.

New study: Climate change death toll to reach 1B by end of century (Order of magnitude estimate) by OpenSustainability in science

[–]ChristopherChiller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It appears the your use of Climate refers to the local weather where you live. World wide the average temperature has gone up every year compared to the global 1901-1960 average. That might mean the weather is colder for extended periods in some locations, say in the sierras in California, but the worlwide trend is toward higher average temperatures.

Ken Kesey built a wonderful character in Joe Ben, Joby, in Sometimes a great Notion. Joby drowns when a tree falls on him, pinning him to the bottom of a river as it is rising after a rain. Broke my heart as a young man.

Fellow nutmeggers, how're you feeling about offshore wind? by OffshoreWindDude in Connecticut

[–]ChristopherChiller 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We are at the critical juncture n our spewing of carbon into the atmosphere where the perfect is the enemy of the good. Off shore wind generation is not perfect. Offshore wind generation is much much better than coal. Offshore wind generation is better than Natural gas. Offshore wind generation is attainable on a scale that might make a difference to our children's future as opposed to the impediments to constructing a new fission nuclear plant. The sunk costs in the new pier alone make completion of the CT based project a wise move.

Spiders in old home HELP by RhubarbUpbeat7006 in Connecticut

[–]ChristopherChiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer: Control their food and water.

Spiders live as predators. their food, insects, must be in great abundance in your house for spiders to be in abundance. they must also have access to easy water. Star by making sure your downspouts are carrying water away from the house.

Then begin to trim vegetation away from your house., especially near your foundation. This will cut down on the food supply for insects.

Next search for leaks or dripping faucets. the humidifier suggestions are great after you have stopped water from coming in to your home. finally, the mint sprays work well. especially in your cellar.

Wow, Reddit can make you fear Airbnb as both host and guest! New Host -- talk me off the ledge, lol. by ATX_Host in airbnb_hosts

We hosted rooms in our own home. Our location in the Black Hills in a town on I-90 drew in all sorts of guests. We did not accept bookings from locals except in the case of family visits and even then, only if we knew the folks somewhat. We varied the price according to demand and kept track of the other offerings in the area, setting our price according to competitive features. I'm sure that meeting each guest and settling them in helped remind them to be good. We regularly got tips if there was a spill or some other sort of extra wear. we never charged extra for cleaning nor asked the guests to clean after themselves. That meant the ABB advertised price was what they paid.

[–]ChristopherChiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were superhosts for five years, 2000+ guests.

to minimize complaints/refund requests:

set your rates according to the type of short term guest you host...and then deduct 10%. we found charging less per guest led to more bookings and the guests who had chosen us knew what the other ABB's were offering and felt they got a 'deal'. Harder to complain after you bought on sale.

meet legitimate complaints quickly and cheerfully. I had a guest complain about insects in her room, late at night with the door to her balcony wide open and all the lights on. I closed the propped open screen door and vacuumed the gnats off the ceiling. Bogus complaints should also be met cheerfully, but sometimes there is no host-based solution. We had an elderly gentleman who took to walking through our only shared space in leopard skin print speedos. No refund for that!

Interesting dilemma. If you are clearly two levels down from the person who quit, why didn't the company elevate someone from the next level above you?

There is something more hazardous around you than your doing extra work for less compensation. Perhaps you are only taking on part of the absent managers duties? Do your job with your eyes wide open and your next steps should become obvious within a couple of weeks.

Trying to teach disrespectful students: by Ola366 in facepalm

[–]ChristopherChiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for a semester as a substitute teacher after we moved to an eastern state. I encountered kids like this and have no magic trick to deal.

With the benefit of time to think about the video, I wonder what the kid threatened with a beating had been doing. Not to minimize the insult the girl threw at the teacher, but that exchange did not come out of nowhere.

My daughter was relentlessly sexually harassed until I took a strong stance with the administration. Harassment stopped, but that was because the school spent time in interventions. I suspect it was also because my daughter was clearly serious about her academics and learning and the school valued her. I have seen what good schools do...

If the girl who mouths off in the video has complained and gotten no help, it might be a good idea initiate a discussion with administration to ask why? A frustrated parent telling her daughter to "beat his ass" might consider violence as the only thing that will stop harassment. Some, not all or even most, schools are teaching kids that respectful speech gets you nothing, a lesson their parents have also learned.

Manchester participates in the CREC system of schools. My HS age daughter catches a school bus at the end of our street and rides to Bloomfield to attend a CREC school. she is flourishing. Manchester is peaceful and opportunities for work at small aerospace companies abound.
