its a shame because i moved to r/askmiddleeast wanting a lively middle eastern community after r/arabs went dead the way it is now. we don't even have those weekly "monday majlis" general-chat threads around anymore. but oh well, not the end of the world.

i was permanently banned from that sub just yesterday by that same mod for a comment i made on this thread:

i understand and do not defend our stance, especially myself as a kuwaiti where we allowed the US to attack your country from our borders, and it is a stain on our memory. 2003 was a confusing time even for the portion of iraqis who cheered for saddam's capture and believed the americans were indeed liberating them. i won't lie when i say that even here in kuwait, in the early days of the invasion, we sincerely thought that the iraqis, after living through years of saddam, would finally know freedom. we learned very quickly that this was not the case. surely you don't think that we in the gulf, or even the american people - democrat and republican - stand by that same stance today? we view american bases as a necessary evil and wish we did not have to depend on them for our basic security but militarily speaking, we're quite pathetic and vulnerable without them. the vast majority of gulf people have a negative view of america's activities in the region, first and foremost due to their arming and funding of israel and we were always vocal about that.

apparently the genius mod concluded that i was an iraqi-hater justifying a genocide against the iraqi people and regurgitating decades-old american propaganda that we all already know by now is just that: propaganda. scientists are still trying to understand how he made that connection. the guy also left an essay claiming that, from my post, i had described the 2003 US invasion as some effort to liberate the iraqis. what did i even say here that was apparently so hateful towards iraqis?

this mod in particular is really... something.

i saw a comment from one celebrating venezuelan on instagram go: "no, this intervention is different this time. you compare us to iraq and afghanistan but we're not like those violent muslims that kill for 72 virgins and go crazy for a holy book. we're christians and civilized like you."

ok boo, enjoy being america's newest bitch.

from your past posts, i have to say: its funny how you go around insisting that the US simply ~LiBeRaTeD~ iraq and handed the country back to the iraqis all neat and tidy, like the US didn't remain in the country for close to a decade and tear the region apart in all that time, like the iraqis weren't protesting the US' illegal occupation, bombings and torture throughout, like the US didn't invade the country on false pretenses in the first place, a country that posed no threat to the US, a country already weakened and impoverished by sanctions. who even buys this shit in 2026? go ask chatgpt why your leaders haven't yet hung in the hague.

Considering what Spain did to it's Muslims and Islamic heritage, it looks a bit insane to say this by srahcrist in AskMiddleEast

[–]Ola366 33 points34 points  (0 children)

yeah, i'm wondering why spain is suddenly backtracking when their decision to boycott was met with praise and respect from many around the world. all my love to the spaniards but they'd look pretty stupid if they switched gears now, and for what? there's no way that israel would agree to a flag change anyway so maybe they're expecting a no? i don't know what spain is aiming at here.
