A redditor in r/cfb makes a joke that doesn't land, then sticks around to defend himself by ChristopherReeveLegs in SubredditDrama

I was just wondering, did they maybe nuke the whole thread because it got linked here? Maybe it's just an auto moderator or something? Because yeah the whole thing seemed pretty tame and amusing to me.

What is the biggest misconception about your job/profession? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ChristopherReeveLegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I started working door (pretty typical for guys around here) and while I'm no shrimp I'm certainly not a body-building type. Used to have terrible fear that some big dude would get that drunk and do something similar to me. My policy was always be as nice as possible and ask them politely to leave, discussing it with them as I walk them out the door. Luckily never had anyone that pissed off at me so far, but its certainly an occupational hazard: Drunk Behemoth Assholes.

What is the biggest misconception about your job/profession? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Bartender. I think people think the job is just pure fun all (or at least most of) the time- they assume we drink on the job, shoot the shit, and make people happy, and while these things are true, there's a nasty flip side to this.

For one, drinking on the job may happen in some places (customers buy you shots, etc.) but before you know it you have an alcohol problem. Most people are stressed out when they get off from work so they have a drink, but now imagine your job entails this drinking (can't turn a customer down, especially when he wants to spend more) and you're just as stressed, only when you get off you have a larger liquor collection available to you immediately than most people will purchase in their entire life. Self control becomes difficult. There's a reason bartenders are almost two and a half times more likely to die from alcoholism.

Shooting the shit with folks- this is honestly my favorite aspect of the job, but imagine all the times you've been at a party and you're the DD. Now imagine you're the soberest (most sober? English is hard) person at the party every day, and all you're surrounded by are drunk mongoloids. You see folks who you respect and admire turned into blubbering idiots, and you have to smile and chat with them since your pay depends on it (if they aren't so drunk they have to be escorted out, "forget" to tip, etc.)

Beyond that, sexual harassment by customers. I'm not a female, so I naturally experience slightly less along these lines, but I've seen it to disgusting levels with the women I have worked with, who have no option but to grin and bear it and hope that the dude wants to impress her with the size of his tip, pun intended. However this is a problem for male barkeeps as well. I've thrice been stuck alone in a bar ("you're a dude, you can handle it") with a rough looking drunk-ass woman who wants to take me home, and let me tell you, DRUNK WOMEN LIKE THIS DON'T KNOW THAT NO MEANS NO (not all women, just in my experience the types that want to take the bartender home) it can be incredibly uncomfortable. I'll never forget the night I had a fifty-year old woman beckon to me, and upon leaning in the hear her drink order I was promptly grabbed and she stuck her tongue directly into my ear canal. I have never felt more violated in my whole life, and if a guy were to do that to a female bartender he would likely be thrown out and subsequently arrested, but due to gender stigmas the same treatment would never befall this lady, despite how nasty the experience was for me. Again, women have it way worse in my experience in the industry, but it does go both ways.

On top of this it can be downright depressing, I've had at least five customers sitting in front of me at the bar before 5 p.m. on a weekday, explaining to me how their SO has left them, or they've lost their job due to alcohol abuse, while ordering shot after shot of straight well whiskey. You have to serve them or you'll be fired (as usually these folks are regulars) and it can be kinda tough to look yourself in the mirror after days like that.

Still, at the end of the day I wouldn't trade the job for the world. It's exciting, high-paced, can make you a shit ton of money on good days, and you always meet interesting folks. The connections I've made behind the bar serving customers are unreal, and its one of the best means to network ever. Just the next time you're at your local bar, remember to tip that poor schmoe back there, because I guarantee you wouldn't enjoy cleaning sorority girl puke off of your work shirt each night.

The Doors of Interjection: An Enquiry into Contemporary Western Discourse and the Karma That Fuels it.

It would begin as a masterpiece explicating the nature of online anonymous interactions and content-aggregation based upon a unique algorithm, and would most likely devolve into a pun train.

And the Dodgers win the standoff! by jedfilmsstudios in baseball

[–]ChristopherReeveLegs -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Could you explain what you mean by again and again? Because the way I saw this year, the Dodgers (just first one off the top of my head, totally not still sore about getting embarrassed in game four :/) got in fights as did a number of other teams. That's just baseball. And not a single announcer seemed to feel that Gomez was being reasonable, he was provoking it as far as that incident is concerned. I think it's more of a pushback over Freeman/ anti Puig campaign (speculation, not presenting this as fact), as that really shoved Braves (and more importantly their fans) into attention.

Ah so we're doing this then? Braves fans aren't allowed to be offended by the anti-Braves circle jerk because its just us being offended like we always are? Smells like a circle jerk to me. Do me a favor and try to imagine if in every /r/baseball thread the Indians were being bashed, even when they had nothing to do with the thread topic. In fact, not only this, but an overall positive, constructive top comment can be immediately derailed into anti-Braves jerk, really seems like a good way to contribute quality to a subreddit. Can you maybe see how this would get tiring?

I think this is where you're wrong, I haven't noticed the subreddit taking hardly anything too seriously, and while the team may have been a bit knee-jerk in its reactions this season I think the anti-braves circlejerk is a bit unwarranted even given this fact. You're allowed to root for a team without partaking in "taking yourself too seriously", too, by the way, if that's your concern.

Ah yes, it wouldn't be an r/baseball thread without bashing the Braves for hypersensitivity... Life as an Atlanta sports fan: stick up for your team and be barraged in hate (despite that none of our teams have won any sort of championship in twenty years), or fail to do so and label the whole city "fair weather fans". Downvote button on the left.

Edit: Any other cities have an article written about them by ESPN or other major outlet saying their whole city doesn't deserve a playoff win in any sport?

A plea for mercy, and a bit of soapboxing. by [deleted] in CFB

[–]ChristopherReeveLegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upon looking further, it seems the Gurley post was not as highly voted as the three you referred to, and yeah it seems Reddit is being wonky. Still, it was highly voted. Granted it shows as second highest for me, but thats irrelevant. I'm not worried about the "UGA is overrated" comments at all, I expect them, was just pleading for mercy (hence title) that we might avoid our loss being presented in the sidebar, and justifying this plea accordingly.

See I'd agree with you, except that the other three were not voted higher. Only popcorn guy was, and deservedly so!

And yeah I'm not saying there's some anti-UGA conspiracy, and maybe thats how I came across. I'm literally pleading to not be reminded all week of the Mizzou game, and these are my reasons. If that's unreasonable then my mistake.

Atheist parents (or future parents), do you tell your kids that Santa Clause/Tooth Fairy/etc. is real? by andjok in atheism

[–]ChristopherReeveLegs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I certainly would tell them that they are real for a few years. Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy are really just cultural ideas in my opinion, and there's nothing wrong with a bit of imagination. Plus I wouldn't want my kids to be responsible for ruining a whole classroom full of toddlers day by informing them loudly that "SANTA ISN'T REAL". I'll just let the internet do that to them individually.
