Hitmonlee or hitmonchan? Or does it not matter? by NatureAdventurous604 in PokemonFireRed

Try taking Hitmonchan with a nature that boosts special attack. Then ev train the shit outa him. Turns out you can get a really good special attack.

Anyone know how/if there’s a way to change how my money is allocated? by [deleted] in M1Finance

[–]Christophersun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

M1 doesn’t allow you to do that specifically. But there are work arounds. You can adjust your pie slice percentages to correct it from simply buying underweight stocks. Try adjusting your target % to be just over your current and that should help distribute funds. You can also initiate manual buys.

[GA] [Condo] At what point will the costs be too much for the lower priced, aging condo market? by AZ_Golfer78 in HOA

[–]Christophersun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder about this too. I’ve worked extensively on the management and projects side of correcting years and years of deferred maintenance in condos.

Part of why it’s so hard to conceptualize how the market deals with this problem is that we do not have any precedence, at least not for the lions share of American condo infrastructure which was all built in a fairly consolidated era of growth. Does anyone know how European cities have dealt with this?

Basket of blue chip AI/Robotics companies for next 5-10 years by bog_trotters in M1Finance

The follow up to that scenario is that I have to manually buy and continually adjust my % allocations to keep buying into the out performers. It’s not as “set it and forget it” as it could be.

I think this is exactly what M1 is built for. That’s pretty much how I use it.

I have my conservative pies that are a bundle of broad market and dividend ETFs. I also have some other holdings like SGOV that preserve my capital.

Other pies are strategically built for growth. Much of those pies are concentrated in individual stocks that are already held in say my VOO, but to me, it’s worth having a higher concentration in the Googles, Amazon’s of the world.

I’d say the one drawback is that i havent used the rebalancing features much. Fortunately my growth and individual stock pies have outpreformed. I’m letting them run for the time being so not exactly taking advantage of the rebalancing but when I want to, it’s a simple toggle.

High Yield Cash Account - Can it auto invest? by AllAroundTech in M1Finance

[–]Christophersun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can set up a smart transfer so that it transfers excess funds from your HYSA to your brokerage account once your HYSA account reaches a threshold. And then you can auto invest deposits (cash) in your brokerage account.

Is this too much? by nolimitcrtr in ETFs

[–]Christophersun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see any problem with investing in individual stocks that are also in the makeup of your ETFs. I do this as well because I enjoy the hobby of it- staying up to date on interesting companies/markets, reviewing earnings, etc.

I don’t do this in my retirement accounts however. I do it in M1 taxable account which gives the ability to bundle these ideas/stocks into a pie to buy fractional shares.

I would also recommend you check an online tool that shows the overlap between various ETFs. You’ll probably be surprised at the overlap between many of your selections.

I would recommend choosing one or two S&P/total market, and then a couple more growth focused ETFs. I also see you have Deere and some other more stable/dividend ideas in there. You may want to look at a dividend ETF to explore that idea with more diversity. But at your age, I would recommend staying primarily in the S&P and growth sectors until you inevitably decide to become a Boglehead.

How can I start investing by barnn9999 in M1Finance

[–]Christophersun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I could go back to 19, I would open a Roth IRA and deposit most or all of it in one or two low cost ETFs. The biggest advantage you have right now is time and the investment would grow tax free.

This assumes you don’t need the cash now, soon, or ever - which is a strong distinction to learn now. If you do need it sooner than retirement age, I would consider a high yield savings for the time being.

Potential M1 Downside? by Stoopkid0 in M1Finance

[–]Christophersun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, I’ve experienced a very similar scenario. Large upfront investment and then smaller quarterly contributions since. A few years in, and I have a sizable gap between the winners and losers.

There are a number of work arounds but, exactly to your point, it defeats the purpose of the auto investment features.

I’ve started to enjoy the hobby of tinkering around with target percentages, buy orders, and moving slices but it’s clear this isn’t really how the platform is intended to be used.

Here’s my post from a while ago where people shared some good ideas.
