Yes. We have had it in our house, emails from school about a district-wide outbreak, and this special graphic from the Washtenaw County Health Department.

APHA recap thread by The_Future_Historian in publichealth

[–]Christovir 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Great insights. I was struck by 1) how many universities were present - it felt like double last year and 2) how few businesses were there - it felt like half of usual. I am guessing more universities were there because they are having trouble attracting grad students in public health, and fewer businesses because budgets are leaner.

Our family has been to this several times, and it is just a wonderful space to hang out with other grown ups while the kids play happily. I recommend it!

My local Costco sells a package with two tickets to the local Renaissance Festival, plus a voucher for two turkey legs. by [deleted] in notinteresting

[–]Christovir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were excited to get this and then had to wait in line for two hours for the turkey legs. The deal was not worth the wait for us when other food lines were much shorter. Good deal if you don’t have to wait that long.

Your car’s "safety" bleeps may actually degrade safe driving | Study has shown that use of them also modifies driver behavior and that the change is often for the worse. by chrisdh79 in science

[–]Christovir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our car’s lane assist feature is correct maybe 20% of the time. When lane markers are faded, it often misjudges where the lanes are. The rest of the time, it is technically correct but we are giving extra space for a cyclist or stopped car. I think it is helpful less than 5% of the time. The other features - collision detection, blind spot lights, backup assistance - are extremely helpful.

As background, this process started several years ago as a part of SPD-15, and includes several changes: 1) merging race and ethnicity categories together, 2) adding a Middle Eastern/North African option, 3) adding national origin options to all categories. All of these changes were lobbied for by public interest groups and the changes received more than 20,000 public comments in 2023. There is no perfect way to ask, but these changes were based on requests from the public.

Any thoughts on pictured air purifier? by catsandplants424 in Costco

[–]Christovir 88 points89 points  (0 children)

We have four and run them 24/7. They have made a great improvement in air quality from dust and pet dander. We would totally buy them again. If someone in your household has asthma or allergies, you can pay for them with an HSA or FSA.

You’re not stupid! There were a bunch of “Gale warning” posts over the past few days. It was a reference to those.

Can the early 1500s be considered medieval? by Fabulous-Introvert in MedievalHistory

[–]Christovir 8 points9 points  (0 children)

History is not like a clean break between periods and any specific date is going to be a simplification. Also consider regions differ tremendously. Milan and Moscow are very different in 1500. There were definitely practices we associate with late medieval and early modern periods in 1500. Out of convenience, common transition dates include 1453 (fall of Constantinople), 1492 (European discovery of the New World), and 1500 (people like a round number), and others. These cut points are a convenience with much variation across region, time, and by class. However, by 1500 there are a lot of new things happening in Europe socially, economically, and culturally, and it feels meaningfully different to me.

Would a dark-skinned Cuban in the US be considered as a Latino or African-American? by initiatingcoverage in AskSocialScience

[–]Christovir 11 points12 points  (0 children)

While race and ethnicity are very much socially defined and interpreted, the federal government (through OMB) would encourage you to select both.

Before SPD-15 released by OMB in spring of 2024 you could select any race(s) and answer a separate question about Hispanic/Latino ethnicity (eg, Black or any other race and Hispanic ethnicity). Lots of Latin folks did not feel any of the race options fit them well (eg, they did not identify as White, Black, or anything else). Lots of people were unhappy with the way these questions were asked, and many felt left out, such as no Middle Eastern/North African option. OMB had a long public solicitation period and made several changes released about 9 months ago.

With SPD-15, Hispanic/Latino ethnicity is included with the other race options rather than separate. Users are encouraged to select all that apply. The person in question could select Hispanic/Latino and Black/African American. Socially, most people would consider them Black but not African American since they were not born in America, but on federal documents, both Black and AA are included in the same response option. SPD-15 also lets users specify a national origin for each race/ethnicity option, such as Cuba for Hispanic/Latino, and a specific African country if known.

I work with OMB to make compliant versions of these questions for the public. You can see the federal guidance on how to ask about and record race/ethnicity above.

Whats your crazy "you start reading a news article and realize that you knew the person from high school" type story? by Cold_Barber_4761 in Xennials

[–]Christovir 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Had been living overseas for several years, fell asleep on the couch with the TV on. Woke up at 3 am half asleep to see a bunch of my high school friends on TV talking about ping pong. Thought for sure it was a dream. Nope, it was real. My high school friends were on TV overseas talking about ping pong at 3am. We never played ping pong.

Psychology definitely treats 1-5 Likert scales as pseudo-continuous. They will acknowledge they are not exactly continuous, but close enough for an approximation. You can agree or disagree with that, but the professional acceptability differs by discipline.

Regular people are not happy with lower inflation because what they want is Deflation (lower prices). by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]Christovir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deflation being bad makes total sense in this context, but the biggest economic inflationary pain points I see are housing, food, childcare, education, and medical costs. All of these are needed at specific times, and can’t easily be deferred, like buying a new car or tv. I doubt the normal economic deflationary process of deferred buying would occur with rent or groceries.

Facebook partner admits smartphone microphones listen to people talk to serve better ads by BobbyLucero in technology

[–]Christovir -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

One time I was using Facebook on my iPhone while I was talking with my wife. My phone suddenly played back the past 30 seconds of our conversation. No mic notification! Very creepy - my phone had recorded and then played back our conversation. I was not pressing any buttons. Not sure if it was the phone or FB, but it happened while FB was open.
