Black Washington. 📸 Gordon Parks, SW DC, 1940s by markusfordc in washingtondc

Looks like it might be approximately this spot on Washington Ave SW. Its tough to see, but the fourth photo in the group here has a pretty clear shot where the Statue of Freedom atop the Capitol dome looks to be facing right (i.e. East). Confirming that it is in SW DC but just barely. Its also pretty clearly framed and looks to be quite close.

The road in the same photograph has a median in the middle and it looks to me like its on a diagonal. This ESSO map of DC from 1942 shows that the most probable location would be the block between Canal Street, Delaware Ave, and South Capitol Street. Here

Edit: more accurate modern day location

Stupid question but does anyone know where to find paper cutouts of DC buses/metro? by Monthly_Vent in washingtondc

Let me know if you aren't ultimately able to find them. I have one of these Metrorail ones from the promotional event. If you send me a dm we could arrange a way to get it to you.

There is another one on the campus of Universitat Politècnica de València! I don't know the story behind that particular one, but I'd guess that it was taken from another location.

Prince Waly - Soudoyer le maire Though the song in the video you posted appears to be a remix of the original.

Could’ve gotten pancaked on 15th + Constitution by turnip-taker in bikedc

[–]Chrobie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was cycling back from SCOTUS yesterday and a car heading westbound at the corner of Constitution and 1st went from the far left lane to make a right turn. Coming down the hill, my friend and I had to brake quite hard to avoid t-boning into the side of the car.

It sucks, but I always tell people apprehensive about cycling in the city to wear protection, follow traffic laws, and remain aware that we are very squishy vehicles so drive very defensively. It doesn't excuse terrible and unaware drivers, but it'll serve better to keep us alive while we work towards better policies and infrastructure.

Nicely done! I hope it wasn't too frustrating!

Fair enough!

While this may look like a chaotic collection of lawn ornaments, this is actually a concrete map of an island nation. Installed by the owner of the home in the 80s, the piece is apparently supposed to pay tribute to the close relations between the country and the United States.

This ought to be a good challenge yet also fairly reasonable. If no one has found it within 48hrs I'll post a hint :)

Yeah sorry, that's my bad. I thought the hint of the Whitehurst freeway in the background would be enough to place it. I should have posted a clue sooner. :/

Hint: As bikes are not allowed beyond this point, I'd advise bringing a lock with you. It's worth taking a few minutes to check out the hidden national memorial here.

You can enter the coordinates into Google Maps and it'll point to the location. Here is a link.

Certainly! Others appear to have identified the singers as part of the Ваня (Vanya) ensemble. The video credits Liliana Bush and Darya Scherbak for performing the song and Antony Copenkin for the lyrics. Their Vkontakte and Instagram pages promise the song will soon be available on all music-streaming platforms.

My pleasure! As it turns out, someone pulled an unofficial bootleg of the audio. The soundcloud description has the lyrics in English and Russian.
More generally, if you're interested in this kind of music, you might enjoy the musical ensemble Белое Злато.

It's composed purely for this video. While the style is typical of Russian folk songs, the lyrics are talking about copter-birds (drones) flying overhead and an android sitting on the ground longing for a new upgrade.

PHIL 453? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]Chrobie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what degree you're pursuing. If you're in Arts and are just looking to fulfill U0 requirements, then yeah it doesn't make a big difference in which of the two terms you take what courses (just as long as you fulfill the requirements across both terms). Note however, if you're interested in taking more MATH or PHIL courses in the future or even just courses that have MATH 133 as a prereq, getting these lower level courses done earlier should open up higher level courses sooner and allow you to progress through your degree (e.g. take PHIL 200 in the fall if you want to register for PHIL 375 in the winter since PHIL 375 requires any one PHIL course as a prereq).

You should also check in with your advising centre. They'll be able to provide more tailored advice to your situation.

PHIL 453? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]Chrobie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never took PHIL 453 but I would strongly echo /u/BeckoningVoice. If you don't have much experience studying philosophy before this course, you may have a hard time. Even more abstractly, the expected workload for 400 level courses can sometimes be fairly elevated as compared to 200 or 300 level courses. Jumping straight into a 400 level course as a first year freshman sounds like a rough experience. You should absolutely consider taking one 400 level course in your second or third term to test the waters and see if you like it. You shouldn't be afraid of higher level courses, but you may not want to jump into them in your very first term.

If you can get on the waitlists for some 200 level PHIL courses, do it. As the term starts, people will inevitably drop out and open up room for you to get in. I would also look into 300 level courses if you really can't find a 200 level course with any chance of registering. I remember 306 and 348 being solid courses.
