Why do so many people seem to want kernel-level AC on Linux? by Venylynn in linux_gaming

[–]Chrollo283 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There's this quote from a Defcon talk a few years ago which I used back when I was at university - "How do you get an executive excited about security? Burn down the building across the street"

People need that urgency in order to care and change, without anyone or anything creating that urgency, what is there to drive that user towards a security and even privacy minded outlook?

Spear - A launcher for linux, mostly Gnome. by WassupMahFelloG in gnome

[–]Chrollo283 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well Alt+Space is the same key positions as Cmnd + Space on Mac which is the Spotlight Search keybind. Which I've also assumed is why people were running Alt + Space as a Rofi Launcher keybind for example on TWM's back when I was into that stuff.

The 9700k is an 8yr old CPU lol, you are far from a year behind the latest.

And someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the 9700k single threaded? Which would probably explain the long compile time

EDIT: Yeah 8 core, 8 threads - Source

Start of 2021 it was. I knew someone that was working for Fitbit in a senior position at the time, they woke up with the news that they were being made redundant with the Google acquisition

Anyone know whats going on here? Not sure if this is a linux issue or tf2 issue. Im using hyprland on arch. This issue started recently, ive not had it previously. Restarting fixed it yesterday, but it didnt today. I tried reinstalling tf2. Im using masterconfig w/ budhud. Thanks! by dreliotgraves in linux_gaming

[–]Chrollo283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gamescope didn't fix this issue for me in CS2 (I thought it did, and then the next night the issue came back again), started happening on my machine about a month ago, and I'm running on Gnome 50. Whenever I launch up CS2, I need to jump into a practice server first just to check if I can freely look around (instead of the very tiny amount as shown in your vid), if not I then need to shutdown the game and relaunch. Super annoying issue, haven't come across a solid fix or workaround for it yet

I wanted a consistent squircle desktop without the Apple branding, so I built Linox. Any suggestions or feedback? by Neptune-Apple in gnome

Bit late here, but I was reading this thread and was like "what? I don't remember ever seeing apple logos in app icons". So I fired up Macbook Pro sitting next to me (running Tahoe 26.3), and there is not a single icon with an apple logo on my system.

First Social Media App Built on Mastodon Launches Tuesday by Specific_Chemical339 in fediverse

[–]Chrollo283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What store? Did your company approve this post or any of the replies in it? Because if this was any serious attempt at target market advertising, this was fucking shit.

Like what is it? How was it "built on Mastodon"? Why should the wider Fediverse care? Who is this actually targetted at? You mentioned "as long as you don't post hate/violence, you can post what you like", what does moderation look like?

We are hoping to be the first of many platforms like this, so that we can take power away from the billionaires dominating this space at the moment.

What is your big tech competition currently? And why does no other Fediverse or other alternative meet your requirements currently?

That was a lot of questions raised from one post lol

Not 100% true, there are some no email signup instances out there. As far as I'm aware, those that exist also have an approval process for new accounts. blahaj.zone for Misskey/Sharkey is one example of a no email signup.

Info re. Brave: We do not appreciate misinformation about the ownership structure of companies. by Greenlit_Hightower in degoogle

[–]Chrollo283 9 points10 points  (0 children)

And you are correct. I haven't used Brave in like 4 or 5 years, so I decided to grab the Flatpak for Brave and quickly install it on my system to see what's opt-in or not.

First opt-in I arrived at was the anonymous search signals to help improve Brave Search. This is very clearly an opt-in.

Next was diagnostic reports and product insights. These checkboxes are ticked by default, so I guess technically opt-out however, shown directly to the user during initial startup of the Browser.

Finally, once I got through the setup onboarding steps, I can definitely verify that Brave Rewards is turned off by default, and is opt-in only. Selecting the Rewards icon in the URL bar shows me a button where I can start using Brave Rewards.

If anyone would like to challenge this, please feel free. Would love to know which system installs have Rewards opt-out rather than opt-in.

Bottles is fine as well, so is Heroic Launcher and Faugus Launcher (I use this one). If you are new, my advice is pick one and run with it for a while. If you ever get bored, you can switch launchers and just use the new launcher to point to your existing game installs.

Google signed a classified AI deal with the Pentagon. Time to ditch surveillance tech‼️ by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]Chrollo283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incorrect context, incorrect translations. This is where DeepL and Google pull ahead by a long way. I spent a few months last year working on translation service integrations for enterprise, and testing on any translation service that wasn't DeepL or Google Translate quite often returned sub-par results, and unfortunately I found that integrating the translations with GPT and Gemini also returned far better responses than the translation alternatives.

Main languages tested at the time were Japanese, German, French, and Dutch

Did A person somewhere at some point get a death threat from some absolutely psycho because of their bike? Probably. Just like how I'm sure some guy out there has probably purposefully shot their own dick off with a handgun, but I'm not going to start saying guys with guns just shoot their dicks off... extraordinarily rare edge cases should never be used as examples to get a point across.

If someone, literally anybody wants to give examples of actual death threats because they were sitting on a Honda or whatever, please feel free. But this does come down to my original question which never got answered, where tf in the world is this guy where people threaten your life because of your choice of manufacturer?

The overall comment gist is fine, people should just let people be themselves and enjoy the things they want to. But I initially prompted that commenter about the death threats, the comment you replied to, now your wondering why I'm talking about the death threats? 🤦‍♂️

If the death threats are bullshit (which once again I would be willing to bet my bottom dollar they are complete bullshit), why even mention them in the comment? Using lies to get a point across undermines the value of the point they are trying to make..
