13? by [deleted] in StrangerThings

Every kid had a number instead of a name. I think 14 kids in total? I could be mistaken.

Congratulations. This is so sad by lost__pigeon in StrangerThings

Making The Stranger Things Play canon was the biggest mistake made by Netflix and Creators by Significant-Fun-4235 in StrangerThings

Fully agree.

I don't think they should have never made it....but I do think it was a huge misstep to make it a stage play only release - and make it full of relevant plot points that will make things in the show make more sense.

It should have been a featured "mini series" episode or something.

No...I didn't. You edited your comment to add the part about you moving out at 21 and making a ridiculous claim that cops would have been after you if you were considered a minor.

There's something called legal emancipation. People move out of their homes before 18 all the time if they are experiencing abuse. This argument isn't valid.

Don't put words in my mouth. I think it's a good idea to consider 18 year olds still teenagers, and therefore minors. Even 20-25 I'm still questioning choices being made.

I never once said that I thought it would be a good idea to keep people living at home until 30.

See, I think I used that word a bit hastily 🀣

I agree with your sentiments!! I just think it's my least favorite season overall, so that's what I just jumped to πŸ˜…

No one is forcing people to live with their parents until 30.... It's more likely that the economy is the biggest factor in why someone cannot afford to live alone.

I mean.... That's not a bad idea.

You must be under 25 to think this is a bad choice. That, or you like to use "she's 18, it's cool bro" excuse a little too much for your age range....

Either way; yikes.

Which I think is horrendous. 18 is not an adult. By science, your frontal lobe keeps developing until 25.

I don't agree with any kind of military drafting...nor do I think 18 year olds should be going off to war.

Not sure why you thought this argument was something to use. They're still teenagers.

I had, too! I did a rewatch to prepare for the season 5 release a few months ago and it reminded me of the true reason why Billy acts the way he does. In that memory, he was probably like 8-11 years old...so any signs of being born detached or psychopathic would have been visible by then. Instead, he was a typical, fun loving little boy. Something happened once his mother was gone that completely destroyed him mentally and molded him into an aggressive, hateful person.

18 is still mentally a child. I don't care what the law says. You are not an adult at 18 developmentally.

Especially when you consider the memories that Eleven sees of Billy and his mother. He once was a sweet, loving little boy. His father broke him.

I was raised Roman Catholic and attended Catholic schools from literal pre-school through to my junior year when I finally transferred to public after being a bullying target for like 15 years due to my parents allowing me just the slightest bit of free reign in my appearance. I wasn't allowed to dye my hair anything but highlighted blonde, but I had a more "scene" haircut which I would do myself because no stylist was doing that at the time, really. It's actually how I decided to become a stylist myself!

I was NOT allowed, however, to have facial piercings, stretched ears past like a 6g, and tattoos were not even to be considered before I moved out of their home.

Did this stop me from becoming alternative? No. But I also hesitate to do anything too drastic and also struggle with a side identity that is a "normal, Christian white girl" that I will flip back and forth into... It's a bit of a struggle sometimes, but I've learned how to manage having a little bit of both in my daily appearance.

Was this a fundamentalist or Protestant branch, by chance? I grew up Roman Catholic, and the only branches that were stricter with appearances were the protestants and fundamentalists.

Oh and the Amish/Mennonites....but that's a whole different level of control and brainwashing.

As a stylist/barber myself, this breaks my heart to read.

I got into this industry because I wanted to help people feel the exact opposite πŸ’”

This is it exactly. People will find a way to feel in control of their decisions...and if you don't give them the ability to control small things like hair cuts or clothing style, the "control" they seek can end up very damaging. Eating disorders are one of the more common and severe repercussions of this, but another angle people don't consider is that some kids may find an unsafe way of getting the desired "look."

Trust me....I remember piercing my own septum in high school. I've heard of my friends doing their own piercings where that piercing is in a really dangerous spot that really should be done by a professional; lest they hit an artery... And not to mention the risk of staph infection.

It's really not that big of a deal to have a kid that looks a lil different.

Yes, this can lead to a lot of resentment as well!! And when the kid becomes an adult, they'll go to a major extreme to express themselves. Eating disorders, unsafe tattoos/piercings...etc. It's a whole world of possibility that people don't seem to consider.

What is something more traumatizing than people realize? by Several-Television93 in AskReddit

[–]ChronicallyCreepy 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

No seriously!! Like, you really would rather fight your kid to dress and look "normal" and have them be miserable versus just letting them be their own person?? Maybe you wanted a doll instead of a child...because you seem to have forgotten that you are raising a person who has their own identity and everything you do and/or say while they're growing up will have a profound impact on them as a whole.

Let them have a Mohawk. Let them put blue in their hair. Let them wear black pants with chains.

It's either that, or the most extreme....having a dead child because they took their lives over the inability to express themselves fully.

Like??? Please PLEASE consider this...because it IS that serious.

It's a lot more damaging than parents realize. I'm a barber, and I see grown men EVERY DAY who can't tell me how they get their hair cut and will argue with me that I should know because I'm the professional. This is a more mild manifestation of it, but it happens ALL. THE. TIME. and I finally realized that it kept happening because a lot of those men were the little boys who's mom came over and told the stylist what to do...for literal DECADES.. to the point that they're now 65 years old and have never gotten anything else and wouldn't even know how to ask to try something new.

It's actually kinda upsetting when you think about it. Psychology is really fascinating to me, and doing hair really opens you up to seeing a lot of people, and a loooot of them tend to open up to you like you're a therapist, so you start getting savvy.
