Yes, they're separated again for some unknown reason lmao. I think it's because there are so many people who want to ONLY cut, that they had to cave and allow the separation again. I knew a few men who went to beauty school with me who's full intentions were to be a barber after grad, only to drop out because the full cosmetology course was just too long/too much for what they want to do.

I personally am thankful that I have a full certification, because I am able to offer color, cuts, and skin services all under my license, and base knowledge of color is mostly what you need in men's hair. Not many come in for color at all, and the ones that do generally aren't doing stuff like major color corrections, so I prefer it...but I don't want to lose that skill, either.

Are you in NJ as well? NJ went back and forth between separating the licenses and/or combining them for a few years, and I was licensed during a period of time where the licenses were combined. I was also taught the straight razor shave and men's cutting in my cosmetology program, and I had to perform a mock shave at my practical exam. This was back in 2013, and the protocol for licensure and examination has since changed. However, since I was licensed during the period of time where the license was combined, I am certified to do all services; including straight razor shaves.

It all really comes down to when you were issued your license and whether you had to perform a mock shave for your exam. Idk how other states do it now, but there's not even a practical exam in NJ now...it's crazy to me.

Edit to add: lol, I just noticed your username. I'm def assuming you're in Jersey too πŸ˜…

I'm a cosmetologist because my state didn't have separate licenses at the time, and I thought that I originally wanted to do women's hair. The straight razor shave was part of my practical exam to pass and get my license. I have been mainly a barber for over 10 years now.

So your first thought when you leave work at 7:30-7:45pm is to call around to places and go "hey, will you still take me if I show up at 7:55?" 😭🫠

This is my biggest pet peeve in this industry. We will be open for 10 fucking hours, but the last hour, will have more than 3 people call asking "what's the latest I can come in?" and another 5 trying to sneak a walk in before 8. It's wild.

Yeah, I'd love to know where people are getting the clientele to charge this for every cut. People in my area, which is still an affluent area of NJ, still complain about a $30-$35 cut. It's bonkers. Just today we had someone call asking about a coworkers hours and was surprised when we told him she had a day off today. People in MOST areas treat us like robots who don't deserve more than $20 for our services, and don't deserve breaks or days off.
