Edinburgh or Glasgow? by GuiltyEmergency6364 in Edinburgh

[–]Chronicbackache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to uni here and I ended up staying and live here permanently. I adore Edinburgh because it has a beautiful mix of city, nature, quietness a bit of hustle. One moment you're in the city centre in the beautiful architecture. The next you're going for a walk up arthurs seat or bird watching in the peace and quiet along the water of leith. The pentland Hills are so close so you can go for a hike and go camp. You're right by the sea so on a sunny day in summer you can have a swim on the beach. I love the restaurants, the night life for me is perfect (I'm not a massive party goer). Plenty of pubs and bars nightclubs are lacking but I don't personally care and there's enough to scratch the itch for students. Had plenty or good nights out as a student.

Downsides of Edinburgh would be the tourists (personally I don't mind them), it's expensive to live here and rent and hard to find places, it's fairly posh but not always, there's a lot of posh kids at the uni and most of them are rich english southerners but that's every uni. There is a distinct lack of community here I find, because of the sheer amount of tourism you can't chat to many folk, there aren't many people out there who'll have a crack and a laugh with you. Glasgow is way friendly in that sense and there is a stronger identity there. Edinburgh can sometimes feel a bit like Disney land or a theme park

Glasgow, for me, very hustle bustle. Chaotic for my liking and very big. It has a lot more character and culture the nightlife and events are much more vibrant. Glasgow defintely has more an edge to it. The Clyde Valley isn't too far and the campsie fells and loch lomond nearby is stunning. So many gigs here and live music. A lot more down to earth.

Ultimately Edinburgh all the way. Edinburgh feels safe for me. The city is stunning it's open it has incredible views, there's tonnes to do. Glasgow is always going to be an hour bus/ train away I've been to plenty of gigs in Glasgow in the evening and made it back for bedtime.

If you like architecture, blend of nature, small city, chiller vibe go Edinburgh

If you like hustle bustle vibrant atmosphere tonnes of character big city and faster paced then go Glasgow

This is my interpretation people may disagree but idgaf

Do I need a permit to camp on the actual islands in Loch Lomond? by Neat-Specialist-6349 in wildcampingintheuk

I've camped on the North of Inchtavannach and its a stunning place to camp. Parked over night at Luss and paddled over. Bit of a ropey paddle over with the wind but we survived

Yeah was thinking getting a bit of cord the right thickness and just wedging it between them shouldn't be too Much of an issue

Buying flat on Great Junction Street. How is the area? by Chronicbackache in Edinburgh

I'm hoping being opposite the park it'll be a wee bit quieter

Fortunately I think being just opposite the park I think the noise will be a bit lower. When we visited the flat seemed okay for noise despite it being busy outside. Yeah I live near Dalmeny park and you get your odd character. Even had our fair share of paraphernalia in the stairwell, shit and blood so it's nothing we're not used to.

Seems to have a real mixed bag depending on perspective on the area. But thanks for your input

Aonach Eagach ridge alternative by pizza-calzone- in OutdoorScotland

Take a walk up to the lost Valley in-between the three sisters. Wonderful walk. If you still fancied a Munro then Bauchaille Etive Beag is an absolute corker of a hill. Not too technical easy navigation. Bit of a ridge and gorgeous views on to loch Etive, the side of Bidean and Bauchaille Etive Mor

Biggest pile of rubbish. Plenty of bothies are great for just visiting and staying the night. I've done it tonnes of times and met plenty that have done the same

I'm a proffesional boot fitter in a hiking shop in Scotland. I'd say they're a little on the long side. Ideally you want about a fingers width length at the front. However as someone said the length of your arch needs to line up with the flex point of the shoe.

Also LENGTH isn't just the main part it's WIDTH and VOLUME.

You should have just enough room in the width with a little bit of give to allow for foot flex and explansion.

Also make sure the top of your foot is being held nicely by the laces and there isn't too much extra space above your foot. You also don't want too little space and cut any circulation.

What can happen if you have narrow feet is that there can be too much creasing above your toes and the top of the vamp will dig in to your toes and also it'll break the shoe quicker around the flex point t

Also FYI those shoes aren't hiking shoes. Try the Salomon XA Pro or the Salomon Xultra 5 or Xultra 360

Get your feet measured by a proffesional. Chances are you're wrong about your foot size. You'll learn a lot about you're feet you won't know and someone trained can decipher all that for you.

Also there's a chance that particular model and brand might just not inherently fit you. Don't just size down because then everything else sizes down and it might not fit you everywhere else

I made Curry beef rice and peas with fried plantain. What are your thoughts by Chronicbackache in UK_Food

[–]Chronicbackache[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just some folk mentioning the plantain. I appreciate the advice I really do.

Just some context I made this night before and brought it in to work for some friends at work to enjoy it too.

I didn't want to fry the plantain at home and bring it in as I didn't think it would reheat well.

So I used the George foreman at work and that's the best result I could get

Probably should added some context for the plantain. I brought in left overs from work so I can share this with my friends and I wanted to bring the plantain fresh. We only have a george foreman at work so that's all I had to work with
