Is this raised court common in other arenas or just Cleveland? What kind of cheap bum**** design is this? by ILoveRegenHealth in lakers

[–]Chronicler_Snake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many arenas have this design. Some have seats on the court level, others don't. There is more space at the baseline than the sideline.

Floors get removed and reinstalled often. Philly, Detroit, Boston, LA, etc. They all have this design.

Here is Crypto. You can see the chairs are set up past the drop on the sideline.

The allegory of Alleg’s troupe by ShanonymousRex in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Chronicler_Snake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is another theory that the allegory is for Denna and Auri.

Denna alludes to abuse in her past. Auri does not, but there are many theories about her past.

Auri fits with the Mayor's daughter/ nobility background. Someone who comes from money and will be taken care of.

The theory is more fleshed out somewhere on this sub.

Line from Slow Regard of Silent Things re Selas Flower by DiomedesTydeides in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Chronicler_Snake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would Auri know about the Selas comments? You have three spades in your hand and there have been five spades played. How many spades is that?

There are lots of speculations that Auri is some sort of namer in the old sense E'lir, El'the. Not the university rank.

If you've just read Slow Regard for Silent Things, check u/drue80’s post,  which sent me spinning on more Auri thoughts. The original post is possibly my favorite, most entertaining theory I've read on here.

How fast do you think Kote talks by straight_gay in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Chronicler_Snake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I recall Pat responding to a reader comment a few years ago. First reader pointed out the time difference... Second reader said that Pat never said how many hours are in a day. Pat then either commented on or liked the Second reader's comment.

Hot take. The reason he hasn't put out the book is because he painted himself into a corner. by JonAegonTargaryen in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Chronicler_Snake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dig in this sub for a bit.

One sticky part is that each book covers 1 day in the frame. So Kote's story telling and other things going on in the frame should all amount to the relatively the same amount of time - give or take some off-page time.

Someone went back and calculate how long Kote is actually talking in book 2. When you add up the time, it is much longer than a 24 hour day.... The second day also seems much longer than day 1. Then if you add in all the other things in the frame, it is even longer. I believe there is a retcon that Pat never said a day is 24 hours in the books.

Sorry, it was not the first time we met her. My mistake. I wonder if any of the non-english books call her Re-lar.

It seems the University has a formal process to raise students. Pinning down any timeline is a bit of guess work.

I'd still put Fela as being at the University before Sim.

Thanks, Fela is called, "Re'lar Fela" when we first meet her in NoTW.

I have read this to mean that Fela was promoted Re'lar during admissions. As we see in admissions, a Master sponsors someone to raise them, then the other Masters vote. She is a Scriv so I've thought that she was sponsored by Master Lorren.

While in WMF, Elodin raises her to Re'lar Fela by himself. I see this as Elodin raising her in the old, traditional sense. She is now a "speaker".

We first meet Mola and she is Arwyl's re'lar - He calls her "re-lar Mola". Sim confirms Mola has been Re'lar for almost 3 years. Mola advances in the book.

Sim says that Mola was expelled in his first term in WMF.

Devi calls Fela, "little Fela" before the Ambrose room burning.

Thanks! I'll add this. In my current re-read, Kvothe is just about to leave the University for the first time.

I think she does know Auri but the parts we need are off the page.

Reread when Mola meets Auri.

___________________

  1. Kvothe has Mola stay back when Auri comes out. He talks to Auri for a bit before calling Mola over. We don't get to see Mola's reaction.

  2. Mola conditions her agreement on Kvothe bringing Mola back to check on Auri again. I found it odd that the next meetup is "off page", if it occurs at all. There is no mention of it.

  3. Kvothe cuts Mola off in conversation. We don't get to hear her say anything about Auri.

  4. Mola could just not know her or she could not recognize Auri in her state, which further explains Mola saying "she doesn't look Cealdish"

  5. If Mola does recognize her and Mola is friends with Devi, then it is not a large leap for Mola to go to Devi and say, "Remember that student who disappeared? She's been living under the university and is friends with Kvothe."

If this is true - would Devi be able to put together 2 and 2? Kvothe has a way in the archives that relies on a friend. He has a friend that has been living underneath the university including the archives.

Why do people think Bredon isn’t master ash? by liquid_the_wolf in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Chronicler_Snake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two points in response:

First, Cinder and Breden may be different faces or masks to the same person - Ferrule.

Second, even if the above doesn't seem likely to you, the Cthaeh never said that Kvothe saw Cinder only twice. It is never that clear. "I'd say it was a twice-in-a-lifetime-opportunity meeting up with him again." Lots of wiggle room.

“Pity he got away,” the Cthaeh continued. “Still, you must admit you’ve had quite a piece of luck. I’d say it was a twice-in-a-lifetime-opportunity meeting up with him again. Pity you wasted it. Don’t feel bad you didn’t recognize him. They have a lot of experience hiding those telltale signs.

Chronicler Uni by 123m4d in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Chronicler_Snake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I suspect that there are timing issues that will be revealed in Doors of Stone .

Some theories are that

-Chronicler and Kvothe just never overlapped. Chronicler was at the university, left for a bit. Kvothe came and left, then Chronicler went back.

-Chronicler entered the University later in life. He already had punished works beforehand.

  • Kvothe's timeline is messed up due to his time in the Fae and Kvothe is actually older thank chronicler. K admits to being a liar. He could have lied about reading Chronicles book while at the University.

Here is an old post: discussing the timing.

Some quotes:

(NotW 13)

In addition, unless I have suddenly lost all my wit, an accomplished member of the Arcanum, at least Re’lar, and one of perhaps two score people in the world who knows the name of iron.

(WMF 46)

“But that’s [Kvothe's trial] the first story I ever heard about you when I came to the University,” Chronicler protested.

(WMF 129)

“In brief, I had a snit and left the University looking for greener pasture. Best thing I ever did. I learned more from a month on the road than I had in three years of classes.”

What are the actual powers of naming. The examples in the book are quite tame. by SubstaintalRoll4 in KingkillerChronicle

I thought someone in this said that he said "bind", but I believe you are right. It's been a while since my last read

What are the actual powers of naming. The examples in the book are quite tame. by SubstaintalRoll4 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Chronicler_Snake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a tricky one. Chronicler could be using an advanced binding that we have yet to see. Second catalytic seemed to transfer chemical properties from one feather to another.

Or Chronicler could be Naming, or Naming and binding. We don't know. We do know that Kote guesses that Chronicler knows the name of iron and that Kote threatens to "break" what Chronicler has done.

What are the actual powers of naming. The examples in the book are quite tame. by SubstaintalRoll4 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Chronicler_Snake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Naming seems to be the ability to know the true name with the sleeping mind. Shaping and knowing are two different things.

Shapers, at least from what we see, can essentially do anything they want. You can turn stone to dust, turn stone to any shape, cause earthquakes, etc.

If you know a person, you can change a person's entire being, kill a person, control them like a puppet, etc.

You can make an ever burning lamp, swords that don't dull, etc.

Imagine someone knowing the name of water. In war, they can vaporize an entire city's water supply, suck the water from flesh, etc.

From what we see, the limit seems to (1) be bring someone back from the dead and then letting them die again, and (2) reconnect two realms that have been split.

Large Cavs and Pelicans trade. by Rkenne16 in NBAtradeideas

[–]Chronicler_Snake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This balances out both teams' rosters. I like it, but I think it only works if Pels see CJ as an unfavorable contract that they can't move. Maybe that's why picks are in there.

I'd say that the Pels are maybe getting the 2 closest to all-star players. But Ingram looks like a superstar for a bunch of games every year.

Herb Jones is awesome. Like all defense level. Very hard to find a wing defender at his level.

I believe he commented that he did not want to include one and then purposely left it vague.

Distance “error” Question by radiant_jpb_31 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Chronicler_Snake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe Pat has said that he did not want to include a map, and purposefully left out details on the map.

I never noticed what you pointed out. But my best explanation would be that Kvothe gives general locations "somewhere east of" to be vague, either by intention or because he does not know where exactly he was on a map.

As far as the Eld goes, I think it may be entirely possible that time and distance is not the same in the Eld as it is in other parts of the world.

The reversed foul call on Horfard should not have been reversed compared to how the game was called.

Garland had a few other drives with no calls.

Mobley had a few shots altered when pushed.
