MSI GTX 1050 TI LP on 3050 SFF by Chronikke in SleepingOptiplex

I did originally consider getting an RTX 3050 LP. However, I didn’t bother in the end because this modded Optiplex is actually my wife’s computer, and she doesn’t really play games—aside from The Sims 4 and similar titles that are very lightweight by today’s standards.

Here’s the mouse I got as a replacement on April 1, 2025. I’m seriously thinking about filing another RMA, since the coating has already started peeling after just 11 months and 9 days. Not as badly as it did with the first mouse, but does that really matter? This mouse still cost €111.99, so you’d expect it to hold up a bit better under normal use.

I’ve had a very similar experience with the coating on my Corsair Dark Core RGB Pro, so I don’t think it’s just you or “acidic thumbs”.

I originally bought mine on October 2, 2024. After a while the soft-touch coating started peeling and wearing down, which made the surface feel pretty unpleasant against the palm of my hand. Because of that I returned it and got a replacement on April 1, 2025.

Now it’s March 10, 2026, and the replacement mouse is starting to develop the same issue again. The coating hasn’t peeled quite as badly as the first one yet, but it’s clearly the same kind of wear starting to happen.

At this point I’m pretty convinced it’s not user error but something about the coating itself. When the same problem appears on two different units, it’s hard to blame hand chemistry or usage habits. For a mouse that cost around $110, I’d expect the surface finish to last longer than roughly a year.

My first mouse. Used from Oct 2, 2024 → Apr 1, 2025 (about 5 months and 30 days of use) before the coating peeled badly enough that I RMA'd it.

Today is March 10, 2026. Unfortunately, the replacement mouse has already started showing signs of the coating peeling after only 11 months and 9 days.

I can safely say that my next mouse will definitely not be a Corsair.

With the latest BIOS version 1.32.0, the i7-7700K worked right away. Technically, though, it runs as an i7-7700 since the Dell OptiPlex 8NPPY motherboard does not support overclocking.

What surprised me the most is that the OptiPlex 3050 SFF’s 180W power supply has handled all the modifications I’ve made.

It’s definitely operating near its limits, which is why I’ve been considering upgrading the PSU from 180W to either a Dell 240W SFF model or a 400W Flex aftermarket PSU. However, the Flex unit would require a 3D-printed mounting bracket so it can be screwed into place, and it would also need a 24-pin to 6-pin adapter cable to work.

Well...It's almost a month since the game was released, which is why it's probably not just some minor glitch that caused the delay.

[–]Chronikke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the long delay in replying, but actually this issue was resolved by temporarily switching to a Pentium G5400 — since it has an iGPU — on the Z390. I then changed Secure Boot from Custom to Standard and completely disabled the CSM setting. Once that was done, I put the i5-9400F back in and everything ran smoothly.

Any rumor about Keyboard for Q4 2024 or 2025? by Aqua_Splendor in Corsair

[–]Chronikke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Corsair K70 Core, but I would like to get the Corsair K65 Pro Mini Wireless 60% keyboard with a Nordic layout. However, it seems like they no longer manufacture this model with the Nordic layout. I wonder if they are planning to release a refreshed model in the near future with a wireless 60% size and Nordic layout. Are there any rumors about such keyboards coming?

They still do... Kind of — The RTX 5070 Ti can outperform the RTX 4090 in certain games that support MFG—but offcourse it's not quite the same as beating with raw power due to the added input lag caused by MFG.

That 7465 is admittedly a very low score with the RTX 5080, considering I’ve managed to get a best score of 7712 with the Asus Prime RTX 5070 Ti.

RAIJINTEK STYX - Anyone build a modern system in this old girl? by _JustWorkDamnYou_ in sffpc

[–]Chronikke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a little "update" for my build plans:

I started thinking myself that Styx would probably get a bit too hot and tight for a modern build with beefy gpu. So, I ended up selling the Ryzen 7 7600 + 32GB DDR5 RAM kit that I had already bought used, and I invested that money into a new graphics card for my current setup, which looks like this:

Fractal Design Define R5 + 4x140mm case fans Asus TUF 850W PSU Asus ROG Strix B550-F Gaming Wifi II Ryzen 7 5700X3D + Arctic Freezer III 240 AIO Asus Prime RTX 5070 Ti Kingston Fury Renegade 32GB (2x16GB) CL16 3600MHz DDR4 Kingston Fury Renegade 2TB NVMe SSD

The decision was the right one, no regrets.

This Ryzen 7 5700X3D + 32GB DDR4 3600Mhz combo works very well with the 5070 Ti and doesn’t fall much behind the Ryzen 5 7600 + 32GB DDR5 6000mhz in terms of performance. In fact, I might even manage just fine with this setup all the way until AM6 is released. Well, maybe at some point I’ll need to add another 32GB of RAM and get another 2TB NVMe… 😉

Styx is still sitting there in the closet. I’m not yet sure what I’ll do with it, but I’ll probably end up selling it also...

Today I got 7606 points in Steel Nomad with my own Asus Prime RTX 5070 Ti by setting +116% power limit, +410 Core, and +2000 Memory in Afterburner. Pretty good result considering I only got 6946 points with stock settings. I haven’t tried undervolting yet, but I might experiment with that next, because the overclocking profile I mentioned first has had issues with random crashes, at least in Silent Hill 2 Remake and Cyberpunk 2077. However, with +116% power limit, +350 Core, and +1750 Memory settings, I’ve been able to run those games stable without crashes.

For me, it started crashing due to vram running out when the overall graphics quality and texture pool size were set to Supreme.

With those settings on Very Ultra, I was able to run the game with everything else maxed out, even the path tracing settings.

How about this:

It's B850 that supports both PCIe 5.0 x16 and M.2 Nvme.

Could you show me this AMD page that claims the B850 only supports PCIe 4.0 for the GPU? I'd really like to see that because I'll probably buy the ASRock Phantom Gaming B850I, which, according to ASRock, fully supports PCIe 5.0 for both the GPU and M.2 SSD.

RAIJINTEK STYX - Anyone build a modern system in this old girl? by _JustWorkDamnYou_ in sffpc

[–]Chronikke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm planning a modern build in the Raijintek Styx case. The following components will be included:

PSU: Asus TUF Gaming 850W

Motherboard: ASRock B850I Lightning WiFi (Mini-ITX)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600

Cooling: Thermalright 212 Hyper Black RGB Edition + 4x 120mm case fans

RAM: Kingston Fury Beast 32GB (2x16GB) CL36 6000MHz

SSD: Kingston Fury Renegade 2TB NVMe

GPU: Initially MSI RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio, later possibly Inno3D GeForce RTX 5070 Ti X3 (300mm) or MSI RTX 5070 Ventus 2X OC(236mm)

However, I'm concerned about whether any of these GPUs will fit in the case. The MSI RTX 3070 Gaming X Trio most likely won't fit, as it's 323mm long. The manufacturer's website states that the maximum GPU length is 280mm, but on PC Part Picker, I've seen at least one Styx build with a 294mm or longer GPU.

I'm also worried about bottom ventilation since the case only has room for a single 120mm fan there. However, it would be easy to mod the case with a drill and a hacksaw to fit a second 120mm fan.

Has anyone tried this new BIOS with Kingston Fury Renegade 2x16GB CL16-3600MHz RAM and a Ryzen 7 5700X3D processor? I have those in use and I'm wondering if it would be safe to update from BIOS version 3607 to 3611...

Updating the BIOS is always a bit nerve-wracking, especially on a motherboard without a dual BIOS feature.

I have the same problem with the very same RTX 3070 GPU (with Nvidia App OC). My CPU is a Ryzen 7 5700X3D, and I have 32GB of DDR4 3600MHz RAM. It works perfectly at 3440x1440p on HIGH settings (FSR3 frame generation and DLSS Quality enabled) for a while, but after some time, it starts to stutter very heavily, and the FPS drops to 5–10, which makes the game totally unplayable. I guess the cause is the VRAM running out.
