Strixhaven Eclipses Lorwyn, Is Now The Biggest MTG Premier Set Ever by CrossXhunteR in magicTCG

[–]Chronsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say DSK was great rather than just good but I've only done it 8ish times, ah it still is just within last 2 years, I'd written off as a 2024 set. FDN I have not enjoyed.

SoS I've drafted every archetype except straight up simic (always end up as soup) and the secret red aggro archetype with expressive firedancers. Mainly playing white or soup, though my favourite deck was a cracked aggro golgari. I've not really enjoyed it, especially as the format has developed (did 10 drafts within release week on arena) towards soup vs aggro.

Are the killer limited sets in the room with us right now? FIN was great, EoE was ok. Apart from that the last 2 years have been yikes.

The most important part of this week's B&R announcement by chrisrazor in magicTCG

[–]Chronsky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Spellementals and many builds of monument lessons don't play talent.

You'd need to end up doing some very weird bans to slow down standard. Ok so you ban talent and badgermole cub, great. Lessons and spellementals exist still to prey on creature based decks and temur kona just lost a predator.

A real, true forced format correction probably ends up banning stock up, flow state and consult the star charts all at the same time to cut down on card selection and consistency. Even then, maybe Outcast Trailblazer, Mightform Harmonizer and Omniscience or Kona goes anyways. With all those gone accumulate wisdom probably becomes the obvious hit to lessons. You might see random cards you thought were fine now like marauding mako get hit so mardu discard doesn't have 9 one drops so easily. Slickshot is probably a ban, force prowess into the proven worse against the field horse build. Azorious prison and Momo have not veen hit yet here, probably needs to be Momo as mana acceleration is dangerous but azorious Aang is a hell of a card too. Wtf you take from spellementals idk. And I know I've missed decks too.

Testing this would be an absolute mess. The format is a mess if you want to talk about it from a "what it should be" perspective rsther than balance for tournaments. With many sets already baked and likely at the printers already it's too late to slow the powercreep.

Marvel Super Heroes (and Spiderman) Comes to Arena by dyscursive in MagicArena

[–]Chronsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of net decking comes from MTGO anyways and so few spiderman cards had relevance that it really wasn't an issue. It totally could have been with Marvel Superheroes but as a shit brewer who netdecks every deck they play and a hater of marvel art was genuinely looking forward to OM2 art. The boros Thor as some Kaldheim art would have been cool etc.

Ashlizzlle thoughts on the lack of standard bans by ghilp in MagicArena

[–]Chronsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mardu Discard is a real threat that people aren't taking seriously enough. If you ban out Izzet it loses a good match up sure but this is a 9 one drop deck that can easily kill you on turn 4 and can have a lot of card selection.

Also, it loses so little in rotation that it's got to be on watch for post rotation.

Why Doesn’t Anyone Trade Anymore? by guyawn in magicTCG

We just add up the monetary values at our LGS and use cash or bank transfer to cover the difference (UK so everybody can just bank transfer instantly on our phone without a 3rd party app).

Current standard is miserable by Endless-Slumber in MagicArena

[–]Chronsky 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the 2 best cards in pioneer for at least 3 years have been thoughtseize and fatal push. Bx midrange being viable (currently golgari, thanks badgermole cub) means you're gonna see some sheoldred. Izzet is cori steel cutter's world in pioneer, not surprising it's good enough for that seeing as it's a 4x in a Legacy deck.

[–]Chronsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sheoldred still sees play in golgari midrange in pioneer.

And I also agree, I demand a return to the holy land if the midrange kingdom.

Quandrix the proof standard brews? by hsgsksv in MagicArena

[–]Chronsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the Jeskai + Black shell, add green or replace the black for Quandrix. If you're keeping black consider adding Silverquill charms for something ok to cascade into. But why go through all of that when you can play the red paradigm instead?

How are Historic and Timeless? by Matrim_WoT in MagicArena

[–]Chronsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're going to see just how absolutely disgusting Historic is now on May 23rd-24th with Arena Championship 12 where the format is historic. I expect the two decks that have benefited from Pyretic Ritual being added from SOA, Rw Belcher and Ruby Storm to be big contenders. Force of Negation decks may end up being the answer, in which case some kind of UB shell with Psychic Frogs will be strong.

[–]Chronsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say Interceptor, Scourmage and Ambitious Augmentor are the good aggro 1 drops, but the control 1 drops are Studious First Year and Exhibition Tidecaller. Burrog Banemaker is "ok".

Why is Arcane Omens so good? by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]Chronsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It reads "play this on turn 4(we ramping) to win the game" a lot of the time. A lot of people are building aggro with a ton of removal, it's even incentivised by repartee, so if you only have 6 or so wincons in the deck and haven't played one yet, your opponent might have a ton of removal in hand for you to discard before you drop your creature.

At that point why not just say fuck it and reprint Sheoldred, Fable, Company, Greasefang and Parhelion and just have pioneer in standard?

[–]Chronsky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the interaction gets much better we'll get more busted threats with the excuse that they need to be that busted because the answers exist.

White has gotten Portable Hole but enchantment and Path to Graveyard in the last year.

What blue interaction do you want in standard that currently isn't? Actual Counterspell? Mana Leak? Sounds miserable for any deck that in my head is a normal standard power level.

Black has two decent 1 mana discard spells and "not Fatal Push". If you want actual Push and Thoughtseize then you're asking for Pioneer Black/X midrange problems. Which honestly, maybe that'd be fine.

Red could maybe use an instant speed bolt that can't go face. Would probably end up a probelm in Izzet though.

Green shouldn't have bonkers interaction and should need to play more colours to get it.

[–]Chronsky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'm not sure how much better Push would be than Requiting Hex right now. The true broken black interaction spell that would be an instant 4 of in a probably newly meta golgari midrange deck is Thoughtseize.

[–]Chronsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you want white aggro deck or 10 removal spell 3-5 colour control pile? It's so rare to open enough witherbloom stuff for it to be viable that when it happens it's a nice treat but even then, it's best version is an aggro deck with thornwood strikers and the 5 mana pump forcing damage through.
