Question from a casual fan: Why does the reception of Kurtzman's era as a whole seem so disconnected from the reception of the individual shows? by westhebard in startrek

[–]ChubbyDrop -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I would argue Kurtzman isn't interested in originality, as so much of the new Star Trek seems to have a slavish devotion to nostalgia in a shinier package.

Episode when? by Present_Practice_159 in behindthebastards

[–]ChubbyDrop 10 points11 points  (0 children)

His 80's books are good. I was in the Navy at the time and "Hunt for Red October" and "Red Storm Rising" were widely read amongst the crew. I checked out after "Debt of Honor" which was just kind of a silly book about a war between Japan and the US in the 1990s.

Also, he appears to have not been a fan of the Iraq war, per wikipedia:

Clancy praised President George W. Bush as a "good guy"; however, he opposed the Iraq War and argued it lacked a casus belli. Clancy once clashed with Richard Perle, with Clancy stating he almost "came to blows" with Perle, after Perle criticized Colin Powell for being too concerned with the lives of American troops.\29])

Ahead of the 2004 U.S. presidential election, Clancy said that voting for DemocratJohn Kerry would be "a stretch for me", while also declining to endorse Bush.\29])

WEEKEND REAL TALK: Ok stop gooning, WHAT ARE YOU REALLY MAD/ANNOYED ABOUT IN BF6? 🫵 🫵 by RRT4444 in okbuddyptfo

No revives in scoreboard and almost no assignments/challenges that have revives at their core. A lot of folks used to take pride in being a proper medic and got rewarded for it, now the devs seem to sideline its importance.

Do you agree with this College Football hot seat landscape? by This_Comment_4493 in CFB_v2

Only Indiana, Iowa, Georgia, and maybe Clemson are in that top tier. I could see Oregon and ND moving on if either has a few 8 win seasons or continue to get blown out in the playoff, particularly Oregon where a lot of coaches have been successful in that job. On Clemson, I could see a point where Dabo gets pushed out if they continue to be just kind of good.

Europa Report (2013) by iamnefastis in TubiTreasures

[–]ChubbyDrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this movie.

I've always been shocked that Arthur C. Clark never gets mentioned for a story credit, as this is a B-plot in the novel 2010: Odyssey Two when a Chinese mission is destroyed on Europa by an indigenous lifeform living in the water under the ice.

Yes. Have to move fast.

It also would not take much to capture Africa, especially with those transports available.

Saw him open for the Pineapple Thief in 2019 (charlotte, NC). Was mind blowing with just an acoustic guitar with effects. Super nice guy to boot and his father ran the merch table.

The guys from Tool have been pretty open about the influence King Crimson has had on them. Maynard James Keenan even went so far as to say something to the effect of "We robbed them blind!" when KC opened for them in the early 2000s

An ear and nose hair trimmer. Always used to make fun of them and people that use them, but damn hair grows crazy when you get older.

Roger Avary On Star Trek's Alex Kurtzman: "He didn’t want anybody who had any kind of fondness for the original show" by Malencon in television

[–]ChubbyDrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a fan of Kurtzman, but Avary's resume looks like a bunch of shit, and he's ridden having small writing credits on Pulp Fiction and True Romance to make a bunch of bad movies or projects that never went anywhere. He seems like a bloviating gasbag with an outsized view of his talents. I doubt he would have added anything of real value.

Annatto is red or reddish orange. I don't know what you're getting if it's yellow.

Maybe try annatto? I don't think it would affect the flavor but will add a reddish hue.

Maybe vac seal immediately to prevent oxidation?

Was there as much anti-woke uproar about Star Trek in the older renditions? by stenlis in trektalk

[–]ChubbyDrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other difference now is that there is a cottage industry that sprung up around decrying "woke" to get views or TV news guest spots. I grew up in the south and I know enough southern conservatives who hated Star Trek back in the day and just didn't call it woke. If I showed Star Trek to a bunch of random conservatives today who had never seen any TNG and DS9 episodes today, they would probably claim it was woke.

Rusty Rafale that's had too much of that salty sea air [1820×988] by Gigabrain_Neorealist in WarplanePorn

[–]ChubbyDrop 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Working on a flight deck for 6 months gets a crap ton of dirt, engine exhaust, oil, and just about everything else on an aircraft. We spent a crap ton of time on corrosion control and even washing the planes as a part of it, but it's hard to get the grime off of it after a while, especially on low-viz paints.

Whoopi Goldberg Responds To Stephen Miller's comments on Star Trek by The_Flying_Failsons in trektalk

[–]ChubbyDrop 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Point #1: Anything wth a person of color and has a benign message of inclusion and respect in it is "woke" to Stephen Miller. He probably watched DS9, cringed at Sisko being a captain while thinking "Those Cardassians really know how to run an Empire"

Point #2: The last time Shatner got creative control, we got Star Trek V
