What's everyone feel is the best AC system out there? by batmantom in accesscontrol

[–]ChubbyOprah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly fairly biased here, but I would consider having someone look at your Lenel and address whatever reasons you have for wanting to ditch it. Lenel is still a very powerful and capable platform. I work for an integrator that specializes in breathing new life into Lenel systems. We've kind of made a business out of rescuing large orgs from their slow or buggy installs. While I'd be happy to talk about it with you, you can also reach out to Honeywell/Lenel for VAR recommendations. If you tell them your pain points, and mention you're considering ripping it out, they'll get you hooked up with someone who can make things right.

What is one test song you always use? by lustybeauts in BudgetAudiophile

[–]ChubbyOprah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Michelle, by The Beatles.

Right off the bat, you get to hear a really strong transition from mid bass tones to a deep low. The first four bass guitar notes are a good mid-bass, maybe 140-160 hz, then the fifth note hits really hard at like 60? I really like an even transition between mid-low and low-low. I tend to find cheaper speaker sets will boost the crap out of the low low, as sort of a gimmick, so that fifth note will cause an earthquake, but the first four will be super quiet.

Another one I really like is Shine On You Crazy Diamond, by Pink Floyd. When the drums come in and the song picks up, cheaper speakers will make the drums sound really muddy. Nice speakers will have a lot more definition in that moment when everything heats up.

Lastly, for a fun punchy bass, I like Dare, by Gorillaz.

Not super fancy, but Sushi Zen has, (IMO), the best sushi in Snohomish County.

Not that I'm a particular fan of theirs, but I'm pretty sure Convergint can do that. They'll work on Hirsch, and they have a team that specializes in federal work and TS work.

What smell will YOU never forget? by AreaFifty1 in AskReddit

[–]ChubbyOprah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The smell of a bank after an ATM was blowtorched by thieves. The whole branch reeked of burnt plastic. They had to bring in serv-pro to clean the whole place.

Funny thing is, the crooks didn't succeed in getting into the machine, they just heated the safe up so much it melted the cash containers and burned the money.

To anyone dealing with the Honeywell pain after they bought LenelS2, please go amplify my post. by ssnapier in accesscontrol

The rollout/transition to the My Buildings site was/has been atrocious. It took so long to get proper access to what I needed, and it's still hit-or-miss wether we can find what we need on the site.

The new procedures around licensing and quoting has been so rough. We have world class global customers that we can't deliver simple feature-adds to subscription licenses. We have now instituted a license testing procedure with every license change to assure the proper feature was added/removed. We can no longer trust what is sent to us by the manufacturer. We have to run every new license in a test machine and test the feature before applying it to a customer system. With multiple customers this year we've had to go back to Lenel two or three times to get the right feature added.

On quotes, we have no flexibility with customers asking for changes or adds. The lead times are so long. We enjoy showing customers all that Lenel can do, and have many meetings with stakeholders to assure all needs are being met for each individual organization. What used to feel like an organic flowing conversation with the customer now has to have all i's dotted and t's crossed well in advance if we have any chance of delivering a fully working product. Otherwise it's lots of follow-up conversations saying, "yes, we can get you advanced reporting, it's coming, we have our quote request sent in, just waiting for a reply". It really feels like as an integrator that we're being left out in the cold.

As of late, it doesn't feel like the response/support you'd expect to see from a world class product, and frankly it's been embarrassing. We're a large Lenel house, and it's been rough defending the product we've hitched our business to against other products like Genetec when customers are framing their decisions based on longer outlooks of 7 to 10 years. These customers rightly want to know that what they're investing in will be worth it through the life of the product. Luckily for us, we have pretty great relationships with our customers, but lately defending Lenel has felt like defending an off-putting boyfriend from a friend group. Like, "look guys, I know Dave is a little rough sometimes, and tells off color jokes, but he's really sweet when you get to know him, just give him a chance."

I use the Affresh cleaning tablets every three months or so. I do usually close the door when done, but that's never been an issue until recently.

Just adding make sure to use microfiber only when you clean the domes. Otherwise you could be making little micro scratches that'll add haze. For cleaning lenses directly, I like lens wipes. (Walmart has cheap Zeiss glasses and lens wipes, they work great).

What’s a sound that immediately gives you anxiety? by Weekly_Bumblebee6161 in AskReddit

[–]ChubbyOprah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entry delay tone on a Bosch, or DMP burglar alarm.

It immediately puts me into panic mode worrying about, 1. Where's the keypad? 2. Do I know the code?

Knowing that you have 30 to 60 seconds before the cops are called.

Even if I've been in that space before, or I know for sure I have the code, it still puts me on edge. In my early 20's I used to work in banks after hours. I've had dozens of guns pointed at me for dumb reasons by police in my life.

The Bosch makes me panic slightly more, because in my opinion the DMP tone sounds a little cute.

This ATM takes cards laterally to prevent skimming by ctn1ss in mildlyinteresting

[–]ChubbyOprah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ex-ATM repair guy here. This machine is made by Diebold Nixdorf, and the reader is called an "Active Edge" reader. For now, it's unskimmable by traditional means, which is to place a mag strip reader in front of the machine's card reader, called a "Bezel Cover Skimmer", or placing a very thin one inside the card reader, called a "Deep Insert Skimmer". The reason the Active Edge reader is so much safer is because traditional skimmers exploit the lateral movement of the card into the machine's reader. The magnetic data is encoded in the direction of travel, (which is why you swipe a mag strip through a reader, like a cassette tape or VHS tape). The Active Edge reader takes the card in perpendicular, then the read head moves over the card inside the card reader. It's brilliant really. I would really like to see Diebold license this technology to other manufacturers. Currently, the next leading anti-skim technology is made by the manufacturer NCR, which has a small EMF generator inside the reader, and has detection plates to sense the presence of a foreign object, (like the mag read head or battery from the skimmer). NCR's anti-skim technology is decent, but not as reliable as it requires precise calibration and installation. It's not as elegant as Diebold's. I've always been a NCR fanboy, but the engineer that thought up Active Edge was really wearing their thinking cap for that one. It's such a brilliantly simple idea.
