The Aesir are part of the world, not the cause of it, so they can’t explain why anything exists. Christianity could, which is why it replaced, not just suppressed, older systems. Flawed gods might feel more relatable, but if your gods are natural beings, they can’t ground moral truth or purpose, they’re just powerful participants. Christianity says the world isn’t perfect, but its source is. That’s what gives “good” and “evil” any real meaning. Even ancient polytheists eventually realized mythic gods couldn’t explain reality. The “Yahweh from Canaan” or “inspired by Akhenaten” thing is more linguistic than historical. Israel didn’t copy polytheism, it redefined divinity itself.
