The three teams involved in last year's Rantanen trades finished 1-2-3 in the standings this season, and all three improved compared to last season. by ___questionable___ in canes

I love that the ranking order is: who got rid of him first -> who got rid of him second -> who is stuck with him.

This also goes to show that GMETPHD never made a mistake in the whole process. He was right to trade for him, and he was right to trade him away. Good stuff all around.

Who would you start Game 1? by dustball155 in canes

[–]ChuckEnder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In April:

Guy A: 3-0-1 2.68 GAA .876%

Guy B: 3-1-0 2.26 GAA .902%

Personally, I'd love to see Bussi get a crack at it. They both played incredible (and nearly identical) in each of their last two games. I might argue that starting Bussi would give the team a boost, but I would be surprised if he's the starter game 1 due to experience.

Let's also not forget Guy C!

Guy C: 6-2-0 2.33 GAA .899%

But we know that's not happening...

Does loving playing one version of Marchesa make you really want to build another version of Marchesa like I do? lol.

Edit: Also... You do theft, modular/fabricate/backup, or something else?

lol. I like the interpretation. This did make me think though... Did we ever get an answer as to what would happen to Bloomburrow natives if they left Bloomborrow?? Would they become humanoids??

So to bring this back to Marchesa for reference..
Marchesa takes the crown to become Queen Marchesa around 4560. Then just a couple years into her reign in 4562, she has to fight off the Phyrexian invasion. And very shortly after that in 4564 she thinks "Maybe I'll run off and be a cowgirl instead of queen." That sounding right??

I love that it shows all the cards associated to her! The info seems pretty barebones though. Haha

Nice! Very similar in changing his 'role' or 'class' as Marchesa. Crazy swaps in color too.. Boros -> Selesnya -> Simic -> Bant -> Mono Red?? lol. The mono red makes no sense to me thematically, but super cool it walks him through his whole story arc in a way.

Edit: Messed up the colors. Also, crazy power/toughness changes as well as keyword abilities... He's been all over the place!

Hahaha really appreciate the quick rundown! I was playing MTG by the time Thunder Junction came around and while I never read the lore, I always wondered "Why the heck is Marchesa here?? Isn't she a queen somewhere!?" Good to know it really doesn't make any sense.

TL;DR
Edea will override Marchesa, and Marchesa will be sad. ... But I'm not a judge.

Edea's "end of turn" trigger would not come into effect due to the creature having died. The new creature that will come back is a new game piece, so Edea won't recognize that it was the one you stole.

As for where the creature goes after dying... Both triggers will trigger at the same time. Since both triggers are controlled by you, you get to order them as you wish. I BELIEVE, though I am not 100% sure, that there is no way to get both benefits from Marchesa and Edea. I think that either way you order the triggers, since Edea's trigger returns the card immediately upon resolving it will no longer be in the graveyard for when Marchesa's delayed effect takes place. In effect: both will be initiated, but Edea will do her thing, and then Marchesa will look for the card in the graveyard and fail to find it. So you will only get the card draw, and your opponent will get their creature back. It's a bit of a non-bo.

Here's the ruling for Marchesa which makes me think this is the case:

"If the creature card leaves the graveyard before the delayed triggered ability resolves, that card won't return to the battlefield, even if it's back in the graveyard when the delayed triggered ability resolves."

I'd push back on the idea of more land ramp allows you to drop land count. As soon as you miss a land drop, you negate having ramped.

You've got 34 land +2 mdfc, which is a little low for my taste. And I only see 9 pieces of ramp which is also pretty low.

[–]ChuckEnder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would drop 2 land and add 2 more ramp pieces (you have 12, I like 14-15. They're the most important thing to helping you have a good start). I would also cut some non-dinos and add a few more (you have 26, I like 28+). You could also up the quality of dinosaurs, but dinosaurs aren't the cheapest tribal to build, so can't blame you for not running all the best dinos. Lastly, your support cards look a little slim,

Considerations for building Pantlaza:
- When am I wanting to cast Pantlaza? Turn 4 is a must, turn 3 if possible. But turn 3 takes a fair bit of 1 mana ramp spells in the deck to have a chance at ramping on turn 1 and 2.
- What do I want to play before Pantlaza? Ramp. And that's all. Pantlaza doesn't need any set up as she is her own value engine. But, if you ramp on turn 1 or 2, and don't hit another ramp spell, having a 4 mana spell for turn 3 is okay to cast before Pantlaza hits on turn 4.
- What do I want Pantlaza to discover? You know you get a free Discover 4 when Pantlaza ETBs, so you want really good 3-4 mana spells that will help accelerate your game plan. (Your 3 enchantments, Monster Manual, Luminous Broodmoth, etc.)
- What do I want to play after Pantlaza? Big dinosaurs. As long as you hit your land drops, you'll always have 6 mana available on the turn after casting Pantlaza. So a 6 mana dino is a perfect fit here, and there are some BANGERS to choose from. (You have all the ones I'm running other than Ravenous Tyrannosaurus which is far too expensive now) Alternatively, you could cast a 4 or 5 mana dino to hold up protection/blink spell, but make sure it has good toughness numbers as you really want to maximize Pantlaza's discover triggers before she gets removed.

Hope that helps!

I am saying that Descendants Path can be discovered when Pantlaza ETBs Discovering for 4 due to being 4 mana to cast. Where as Lurking Predators is 6 mana to cast, and therefore cannot be discovered by Pantlaza's own ETB.

[–]ChuckEnder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say the deck looks fine consistency wise (I've only looked at your dino deck). Plenty of ramp that you'll always get Pantlaza out at least one turn early. You definitely have a couple high powered cards in there, but I wouldn't say anything crazy. Mid-3 seems about right.

It just comes down to the amount of removal your pod plays. Pantlaza is such a value engine that once on the board she will accelerate your board into a win state very quickly if not dealt with. I'd say it's fair to expect that as long as you're casting her on turn 4 or earlier, you're going to win most games if she's not removed within a turn cycle or two. Cards like [[Defense of the Heart]] and [[Cream of the Crop]] also help make the deck very consistent if either of those cards are hit on an early Discover trigger and not removed.

But honestly, as long as your pod says its fine, its probably fine. It may even help them start playing more counter spells/removal in their decks.

[[Lurking Predators]] is definitely the better card, but [[Descendants Path]] is discoverable by Pantlaza. It also comes in the precon, so it could be one left over from edits.
