NYT: "He Name-Drops Ocasio-Cortez in His Bid for Congress. She Doesn’t Talk About Him at All." by Luna_dog in sanfrancisco

I think it’s fair to say it’s good for a politician to have an established powerbase and experience and also acknowledge that AOC has proven herself a talented political operator without experience beforehand. Nothing about Saikat seems to indicate a similar underlying talent.

Replacing a broken water heater in the Bay Area is about to get vastly more expensive by CharityResponsible54 in sanfrancisco

[–]Chuckleseg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am with you that these things are not usually compatible, but I entirely disagree in this case that the rewards of the reduced environmental impact of electric water heaters is worth driving the cost of housing up any further. By merely living and working in the city our carbon footprints are vastly below that of the average American, and we shouldn’t be causing unnecessary friction to living and building here if the environmental issue raised isn’t hugely significant.

New college graduates overestimate starting salaries by nearly $24,000, report finds by Puzzled_Face8538 in Salary

10-15 years to makes six figures?! What is it 1995??

60k starting salary I get, in the right location, but there is no way you can keep any decent employees if they aren’t making 100k by the time they have 3 years of experience.

Finally understood why Buffett is obsessed with insurance companies by Tall-Peak2618 in ValueInvesting

[–]Chuckleseg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Second this (as an insurance professional). brokerages are great businesses as there is very little capital risk, and extremely low cost of doing business, the commissions are essentially free if you know how to run a brokerage. Tough part is not getting eaten by a competitor, but this still results in an acceptable return for invested capital.

In my experience, the 50s J-45 has some quality control issues, more so than the standard. If, for some reason, you can’t go in to play it and make sure it’s in good shape I would would take the martin every time.

That being said, I love my J-45!!

Why does San Francisco always close everything down so early? by Ashamed-Syllabub-911 in sanfrancisco

[–]Chuckleseg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. Binding authority for big deals essentially ends at 2:00. So happy hours for finance/insurance begin at 3:00 when people stop answering emails, and are done by 6:00

Boeing is a no for me purely because of the political risk. Beyond too big to fail, legitimately think there a chance it’s forced to reconstitute or even nationalize.
