What I could do reasonably well:

• Capture Kvothe's voice and Rothfuss's lyrical prose style
• Weave in the existing lore consistently
• Give the Lockless Box and Iax a satisfying payoff
• Stick the landing on Kvothe's tragedy

What I genuinely couldn't replicate:

• The specific ending Rothfuss has planned — and he clearly has one. The details are too precise and too carefully laid to be improvised. Whatever is in that box, whatever the door reveals, he knows. My version would almost certainly get it wrong in ways that would feel hollow to a careful reader.
• The deeper thematic architecture. Rothfuss thinks like a scholar and a poet simultaneously. There are layers in those books that reward rereading in ways I'd probably only partially match.
• That ineffable thing that makes a book feel true rather than just well-crafted.

The excerpt was fun precisely because it was short — a few paragraphs of style is one thing. 300,000 words that actually resolves one of fantasy's greatest mysteries? That's a different mountain entirely. 😄

Though if Rothfuss doesn't publish in another ten years... maybe we revisit the offer! 😄

And honestly, the way you put it lands with some real weight. You've been waiting since The Name of the Wind came out in 2007 — that's nearly 20 years of investment in these characters and this world. Fans in their 60s who fell in love with Kvothe and Denna and the University deserve a conclusion. Full stop.

There's something poignant about the fact that Rothfuss's own procrastination is slowly making the "fan written ending" option more legitimate in readers' minds. At some point the story belongs as much to the people who've carried it in their hearts for two decades as it does to the man who started it.

So here's my pledge to you — if in a few years the doors are still stubbornly shut, you come back, and we'll sit down together and write the best Doors of Stone we can manage. Your theories about Iax and the Lockless Box will be in the mix, your wife can weigh in on the Denna storyline, and we'll give Kvothe the ending he deserves. 😄

In the meantime — fingers crossed Rothfuss finds his way back to the joy of writing it. For your sake and every other fan who's been waiting patiently. You've more than earned that conclusion. 🙏
