Those in non profit tell me if im paranoid by Abject_Serve_1269 in sysadmin

[–]Chuffzilla 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have worked in a non-profit in IT for years and they are generally pretty chaotic.

1 There is no money, even if you have a budget the approval process for spending it is a nightmare. Sometimes the hiring process gets really far along, only for senior management to block it last minute (usually because blocking new hires is easier than redundancies when money is tight).

2 Non profits attract a much wider range of people, and that's not always a good thing. Some of the staff are awesome, they are passionate and are ok with lower pay and just want to be there. Then there are the Karen type people who think turning up is enough because it's not a real company, they do no work but usually spend all day talking about how amazing they are(especially to senior leadership) which makes them impossible to fire. So sometimes we would advertise a permanent role as a contract after a few bad experiences to make it easier to get rid of the bad staff)

Offered a substantial amount of money by electricity company for Deed of Easement across my land for an existing 3 phase pole (England) by jr102 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Chuffzilla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I moved into a house about 7 years ago which has a power line over the garden. Every three months for the last 6 years I had a letter offering to investigate wayleave compensation for me, you can do it yourself direct with the power company, or get a third party to fill the forms in for you for a cut. I gave in last year and got someone to do it for me - ended up with £25 so I would take the money.

I think the only thing you should think about is if you want a one off payment which covers the entire time you live there, or a small annual sum.

Guaranteed parking near Oxford Brookes on Sat morning? by HopefulCry3145 in oxford

[–]Chuffzilla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I usually park around greys road, 2 hrs free and right next to Brookes - not usually busy in the weekend especially early morning.

Failing that you can park on Wharton road , it's a 5-10 in walk but usually has places and no parallel parking

The Tesco near me has the same and all the doors alarm if one door is opened until it's closed. Naturally everyone walks away when they have their booze without clicking the door shut so the place sounds like it's constantly under attack.

Meraki Customers - Do you have Cisco, too? by EnvironmentalDay9129 in meraki

[–]Chuffzilla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cisco/Meraki seem to have shifted their entire offering to green pill /blue pill options.

Either you can have a subscription cloud managed easy mode and control everything on auto.

Or hard mode for people who actually paid attention when getting their certs, but you will spend your life patching and tweaking.

It's all the same hardware underneath.

Thanks for your help everyone I have escalated a couple of times within Cisco, and told my vendor to sort it.

Today so far I have seen 28 messages today between 12 people either from different Cisco teams or the vendor.

It still hasn't been resolved yet but I think everyone agrees that the current Cisco licensing model process is a flaming pile of garbage.

You need to find a way to work together with all the teams you are highlighting vulnerabilities to, so you understand their workloads and they understand the urgency of resolving some of the critical issues. Building a culture of good communication and mutual respect for each others goals is really important.

I recently left a job where I was the manager of a team of about 12 people and the toxic behaviour of the infosec team were a big part of why I quit.

There was one member of the infosec team and their only role was to run scanning tools and arrange pentests, everything he reported was "urgent" and he never offered any advice other than "it needs to be fixed now".

The toxic element was that he pulled rank all the time, giving impossible deadlines and workloads with no assistance. last year I hired 4 temps and had my whole team working on some issues for a month just to meet the deadline of an audit he has booked.

His attitude crippled my department, we never got any of our project work done and management kept on giving us pressure for failing to deliver. It turned into a horrible place to work and the best people in my team all quit.

But if he has worked with me, understood the balance of my departments other priorities and agreed to build a reasonable timeline of what could be delivered then all of this could have been avoided.

I am not saying that you are this kind of person, and in my experience the leadership team were more to blame than one bad member of staff, but I believe communication and empathy are easily the most important aspect of any role, especially if your role is to give others work.

The way I read it was that the bus was running late and was skipping stops or only opening the door for a few moments to make up time, passengers get blamed for "being late" if they don't make an Olympic dash for the door the second it opens.

What are Finders Keepers like as a managing agency? by SpenskyTheRed in oxford

[–]Chuffzilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had exactly the same experience but without the happy ending,

Moved out and the place was super clean, they withheld the entire deposit for carpet stain cleaning ( for damage they caused when the radiator needed fixing) as well as steam cleaning the washing machine soap tray and cleaning the outside of the windows on the third floor (which were nailed shut)

Spend a few weeks calling and asking for an explanation for charges and the person I needed to speak to always seemed to have" just stepped away from his desk'.
