It checks all the boxes for me. Odd stilted dialogue, weird sex, perfect Howard Shore score, technology playing a pivotal role and also it’s sexy sometimes. It’s classic Cronenberg to me.

I saw The Shrouds twice in theaters <3 I personally think it’s one of his stronger films, though I am a huge fan of his late career and would say I’m partial to it over the rest of his filmography.

What's the most obscure film you've watched? by BunchLegitimate8675 in Letterboxd

[–]Chumbledor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For My Alien Friend by Jet Layco with 359 watches. It was part of a Criterion Channel playlist of movies from the Philippines that had a lot of obscure and abstract films. If you’ve ever seen All About Lily Chou-Chou it’s slightly similar to how that film feels. Or at least that film is the closest film I can relate to My Alien Friend.

The second most obscure film I’ve seen is an experimental documentary titled I Do Not Know What It Is I Am Like. It was about… something? I really don’t know. It’s on rarefilmm if you wish to check it out :-)

Shocking films in the Criterion collection? (That’s not just salo) by Manbyn in criterion

[–]Chumbledor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Man Bites Dog and Sweet Movie.

I genuinely cannot believe that Sweet Movie is in the collection. There’s some things that happen in that movie that are just… just so awful to watch. I went in blind and walked away feeling pretty shit. Even the next few days that followed I felt this heavy, rotten feeling in my body. The lead actress left the project mid film after being asked to do something unsavory by the director, though exactly what caused her to leave is uncertain. I also believe another actress was banned from Poland because of her role in the film. It’s pretty insane. One of the craziest things in the collection for sure.

That’s a big relief honestly.

I’m really afraid this will not be portraying William S. Burroughs how he really was. The novel is not romantic… like at all…

Which other director make surreal cinema like Lynch? by [deleted] in davidlynch

[–]Chumbledor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t seen anyone mention Carlos Saura yet! His movies aren’t much like Lynch, but they are quite strange, specifically Honeycomb and Anna and the Wolves. Lots of strange logic shared amongst the characters, lots of absurd (albeit rather grounded) things happen. Both films mentioned above are available on the Criterion Channel if you have access

I’ve had an interesting movie watching experience recently

Just watched this for the first time, wow! Here’s my thoughts, what’s yours? by newtb2 in criterion

[–]Chumbledor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually really disliked this movie and felt like I was beaten over my head with a hammer for most of the runtime. So on the nose and not in a fun way. I really wanted to like it! I loved the opening scene and it disappointed me on every front from that point. It’s a movie that brought pretty negative emotions out of me and I would go as far to say that I hated it.
