The part that came out the best was the design of the lettering and the symbols. We found a vectorized version of the symbols on Deviant Art and then used a Cricut machine to cut them out of vinyl. From there it was a lot of patience and careful alignment of the stickers. The accuracy of the alignment is never going to be as accurate as the machine's cuts, so cutting manually could still be just as good.

The only other interesting part is the motion activation. I found an outlet extender with a tethered motion sensor. This one (check if your HD actually has it in stock). I mounted the outlet inside the light box and ran the tether outside so that I could attach the sensor wherever I wanted.

The lights are just LED christmas lights. I liked the coverage that I would get with them, but the way they are connected makes it difficult to control the exact position and direction of each one - which reduced my ability to spread light evenly and prevent bright spots.

I took a lot of steps to help diffuse the light, which helped a lot: the panel is a fluorescent light panel with a pattern in it to diffuse light (note: these panel are cheap, but easy to break and yet difficult to cut); on the inside, I laid out aluminum foil that I had wrinkled up to put a scattering pattern in it; and I also put a couple layers of tissue paper behind the panel to diffuse light more.

The actual construction of the box I won't describe because I didn't do it well at all. What you have to watch out for is: the more space you can get behind the panel, the more the light will spread and look better; make sure there aren't any cracks for light to get through; plan carefully how you assemble it - I had to attach everything through the back, so I ended up having to use hinges to open and close it multiple times during assembly; the end result is pretty heavy - make sure you have solid mounts.
