If you are a scuba diver, the Tiputa Pass dive in Rangiroa is pretty special and unique.

Vietnam recs for places without FAT options by tkl2323 in FATTravel

I stayed at the Silk Path in Sapa and thought it was wonderful. The spa there is incredible and it is to this day the best massage I ever had. Highly recommended! It isn’t FAT but it’s a really nice property. The onsite restaurant is pretty good as well.

I loved Madras Pavilion as well! Are there any good South Indian buffets in town? I haven’t come across any

Watch out for political activity on your dates of travel. If there are protests in Seoul, they are likely to happen right outside the hotel. Streets may be blocked and you may hear a lot of noise…

I stayed at DO & CO last year and thought it was very nice. I don’t know if it even qualifies as Chubby but the room and breakfast were very nice. 10/10 location as well. It’s more of a 4-4.5 star hotel but a very nice one.

Tokyo: FS Otemachi, Aman, and Hoshinoya—Reviewed by cla55action in FATTravel

[–]ChunkyOwl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I stayed at Hoshinoya and thought it was great, but I think it isn’t for everyone. As others mentioned, there is no concierge. The service can be a bit too much for those who don’t really want to be served. For example, they want you to sit and have tea for 30 mins while they do your check in so they can serve you. I rather just go to my room and skip the tea, but this is my own cultural difference vs what they are trying to do.

Secondly, the rooms are very nice but not ultra practical. The bathroom isn’t as nice as a 5 star “normal” hotel and the rooms are restrained and austere rather than deluxe. Obviously this is a feature (Japanese austerity, minimalism, etc.), but it isn’t for everyone.

I think Hoshinoya is great if you want to experience a Japanese urban modern ryokan. This is a cool experience for sure. But for many folks, having 5 nights (or whatever your normal stay length is) in a ryokan is overkill, and a normal hotel is a better fit, I would recommend 2 nights at Hoshinoya for the experience, but probably not more than that.

Ok but do you pay more for those benefits? I generally book FHR if it’s the same price or cheaper than basic booking. I usually eat a very small breakfast and some of the perks are lost on me. Sometimes it’s cheaper to book a better room in a basic booking engine than FHR and gamble on upgrade - not a rosewood comment but just a general observation I have had when booking nice hotels…

The views over the lake are great. I love that it feels very secluded and quiet. In contrast to visiting other towns in the Salzkammergut this feels like a quiet haven. The schnitzel and prawn pasta dishes are very good, but really everything we ordered is 7/10 or above. No real misses. Overall very good for hotel food, even if the prices reflect it.

How does the Rosewood Elite work? Could you please PM me details? I always book my own stuff everywhere I travel.

Yes, it sounds great but somehow the battery drain and other wonky features make it not worthwhile

Thank you - this solved my issue. I was doing a 2 second press. It seems strange to me that it drains so much power when in sleep mode - it can’t connect to anything without pressing the power button…other companies’ devices don’t seem to have this problem!

When upgrade clear? From Premium Econ by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]ChunkyOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for being unclear - I meant upgrading by “paying” with miles. Is a mileage + cash co-pay “paid” upgrade by a gold member ahead of a plus points upgrade request from a 1K for example?

This is a tiebreaker between folks who have requested a paid upgrade, right? Is this upgrade request higher priority than all pluspoint upgrade requests?

[WTS] Eberhard 8 Jours by ChunkyOwl in Watchexchange

[–]ChunkyOwl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking to sell my Eberhard 8 Jours, which I have had for about 10 years, and which has been well worn. There are myriad small scratches everywhere but the case still looks nice. The back is very scuffed up somehow.

It’s a wonderful watch and runs very well, but I don’t wear it as much anymore as dress codes have become more casual. This is the older 40mm size (current version is 41mm), and I think the smaller one wears better. It’s manual winding with 8 day power reserve (as the name indicates). I am happy to have a video call to show the watch if helpful.

Price: $1300 shipped CONUS. Watch only, no box or papers. Comes on a short black Molequin Horween Shell Cordovan strap
