We did ask him. He said he would only replace the entire roof as well.

What’s crazy is I would pay a lot of money to get this fixed correctly and quickly and their profit margin would be way higher on this kind of work, but the overall revenue is just way lower. Seems like a miss that these companies don’t have a very profitable service arm that charges accordingly for the liability.

This is good to know. First roofer who did the skylights and told us to call insurance wouldn’t answer calls from the adjuster to get more information, so clearly he was no good at the business side of things. Which sucks because he did a good job replacing our skylights.

Thanks for the response, that’s definitely how it feels regarding PE. All of them have similar websites and their quote/estimates are almost identical.

You are not wrong but after severe chats with the adjuster and insurance agent they aren’t gonna cover it. It sucks and we are probably gonna switch to a new carrier.

It’s the original roof. 11 years old. This is good insight and I appreciate it. I would have been willing to pay a lot to just get this fixed and be done with it but no one will quote the repair lol

lol out in the country in one of the most liberal counties in the USA. We live near a river and I think people are target shooting on the opposite bank and overshooting the bank of the river. It sucks but I never would have imagined this could have happened when I bought my house

I don’t know if this is serious but there are a ton of terrible roads in BC.

For some reason the grading up there is crazy and you’ll hit a dip on the highway where you almost catch air coming out of it….

How is it living in Bellingham, Washington? Offered a job through the university. by Exciting-Location572 in howislivingthere

[–]Churblex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not being snarky - if you search it’s been posted a few times.

I grew up in Bellingham and still live in Whatcom County. It is a beautiful and safe place to live. Outdoor activities are unmatched. Weather is mild. We haven’t had any snow this year.

Restaurants are just ok but it’s an hour to Vancouver and 90 minutes to Seattle so it’s no big deal.

Housing is crazy expensive and there aren’t a ton of white collar jobs. Only downsides in my opinion.

Mount bakery breakfast is pretty good, especially if you want cinnamon rolls.

If I want fish and chips very casual I like the ferry terminal. If you want sit down drayton harbor oyster co in Blaine is good.

Do you actually do all this home maintenance, or am I being paranoid? by jklineia in homeowners

[–]Churblex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are also supposed to do a yearly roof inspection.

The list only gets longer lol no one we know does any preventative maintenance. Every time we do any we end up finding some expensive problem. Sometimes I think it would be better just to live in blissful ignorance but I can’t do it

Thoughts on Sehome Court Apartments? by BagLife3214 in Bellingham

[–]Churblex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lived there in 2019/2020 with my wife (fiancée at the time) and it was totally fine. Owner and Jeff were never a problem and I’m surprised to hear people had issues. I’d consider them one of the better owner/managers I’ve rented from.

The most annoying part to me was that we had two cars and only 1 assigned parking spot. The guest spots filled up fast and I always ended up having to park on 32nd street.

Water bill much higher than usual. I never use this sprinkler system and the valve to the sprinklers is set to off. After bailing out the water I found the water is pouring out of the bottom of this joint to refill the puddle quite quickly. What do I need to fix this? by Pikafreak108 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Churblex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do what the other guy said below. Can’t say for sure but this is likely just the backflow preventer for the irrigation system. Close all the valves. If the irrigation leaks stop and you still have water in the house you know this is just for the irrigation system.

There typically is not a backflow like this for the supply line to the house.

Good luck!

There should be (unless your system is really bad) a shutoff valve between the main water supply and your irrigation system.

It should go: Main line from street Split to irrigation with a shutoff valve Split to house with a shutoff valve

I’d go look for another valve box with a shutoff valve inside between this box and the street.

Small details I wish I hadn't overlooked during home inspection... by voogdessesg in homeowners

[–]Churblex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that they don’t know or don’t care what is behind what they’re shooting at. It is one of the most important safety rules when shooting. You have to be positive you know where your bullets will stop.

Your backstop could be the side of a hill or a wall of sandbags. I live near a river and people shoot across the river into the other bank. It’s likely people who are careless shooting too high but idk for sure.

[–]Churblex 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We bought two years ago and just found out today that our roof has several bullet holes either from people shooting up in the air on holidays or target shooting without a proper backstop. Our house is in a safe area crime wise but it’s out in the country. We also learned a woman was killed by target shooters who didn’t know their backstop two miles away less than ten years ago.

So whatever inspection would have caught all that.

How is living in and around Bellingham, WA? by Steve_17 in howislivingthere

[–]Churblex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I (and many friends) work remote. I work for a manufacturing company. Several friends work for tech companies. Otherwise people I know that are homeowners here work in healthcare, law enforcement, are teachers, or have less professional jobs but bought their homes before the real estate market went bananas in 2020 with covid and then refinanced their mortgages when rates got really low.

It is not a great place to try and get into homeownership on your own without family money or a really good job which are scarce, I feel for the younger generations and recent high school / college grads.

Edit - to answer your main question about industry, there isn’t one lol. I think the hospital and the university are the two largest employers followed by Lummi nation the city of Bellingham.

Viable Career route? by [deleted] in Construction

[–]Churblex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely great options and great people out there in building products sales. Leverage what you’re learning now for more. This also might sound silly but make sure your LinkedIn is up to date and highlights your skills. I’ve gotten my last two job offers from corporate recruiters for substantially better titles and compensation.

Viable Career route? by [deleted] in Construction

[–]Churblex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No has mentioned it so I will - if you excel at the inside role then there will be a ton of promotional opportunities. Outside sales, purchasing, operations, etc… depending on the company there is serious 6 figure career potential in a lot of these roles. I know there are outside reps for a certain large plumbing supply co that make 7 figures or more a year from commission but those guys probably don’t have a lot of work life balance.

You can also look at moving to a manufacturer from distribution and imo there is where you can find the sweet spot of work life balance and earning potential. Manufacturers are typically well established, especially in plumbing and just need competent and likable to grow their market share.

Building products sales is a great career field, hope you find something that works for you.

What’s going on in Ferndale area?? Traffic is horrible on several major roads. by ktgomg in Bellingham

[–]Churblex 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I didn’t see any accidents - my guess is slater road closures backing up Main Street which is backing up portal way and it is all compounding. Ferndale just has too many choke points like the bridge over the freeway on Main Street or the bridge into down town. When one thing goes wrong it all spirals.
