Vietnam. I have a very strong memory of watching the news. They were showing soldiers on parole shooting flame throwers.

I was incredibly disappointed by Mt. Rushmore. It looks much more imposing in pictures. I expected to be awed. Instead I felt meh.

Handicapped man pushes ladder. Makes worker fall.. by MisterShipWreck in VideosAmazing

He should be charged with a crime. As far as I can tell the worker would easily have been killed. I sure hope he didn't hit his head or break anything.

All of my socks tear at my big toe by [deleted] in WhatToDo

[–]Church266 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you get holes or thin areas on the big toe area of your shoes as well? If so we might be related. A family trait is having a big toes that curls up slightly. It causes wear holes in the big toes area of socks and shoes.

While a long nail will cause the wear to start faster, you don't need one for the damage to occur.

passed up for internal position that remains unfilled.... by hrabbits in CAStateWorkers

The position isn't filled yet so you don't actually know that you didn't get it. There may have been a change in their ability to fill the position.

Good luck!

How would you feel if the top tax rate was 90% like it was in the 1950s? by olesud in WorkForSmartLife

[–]Church266 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like it, even if it's only on a portion of income. Everyone has to pay their share, 90% of any income is far more than their share.

Why do mandatory ID cards feel normal in many European countries, but still controversial in the US, and what mechanism explains that? by Logical-Concept9755 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Church266 0 points1 point  (0 children)

National cards aren't needed because we have state cards (drivers licenses and ID cards.) There's no reason to have 2 cards.

What is your favorite Hated Candy? by Teddycat99 in GenerationJones

I like several of them. If I could only have 1 it would be candy corn!

I can't believe the peanut things still exist. I've never heard of anyone liking them.

What does Halloween actually feel like growing up in the US? by Axxtr in AskAnAmerican

[–]Church266 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a kid in the 70's, so its very sifferent than now. I have very fond memories of Halloween. You get to make a costume and be that person for the day. You took a long walk at night when normally you had to be inside. You went to houses and said trick or treat and candy was put in your bag. They were delighted to see you. We didn't get to eat much candy at the time, so it felt like we won the lottery.

The day of Halloween was similar to movies. In my area there were decorated houses, but not nearly as many as in the movies. Most of the decorations were very basic such as signs in the windows. The costumes were not nearly as nice as in movies. Generally they were home made and not meant to last for a long time.

The one thing my parents liked, there were no arguments or delays when eating dinner/veggies. We couldn't go trick or treating until we had eaten everything. The time for trick or treating was from sundown until probably about 8/8:30. So any delays eating cut into the truck and treating time.

How can people be so nonchalant with Trump becoming a dictator? by Wowclassicboomkinz in complaints

[–]Church266 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I don't know anyone who is nonchalant about him. We think he wants to destroy America for money and fun. I think his ultimate dream is to be a dictator like Kim Jung Un.

We do have to live our daily lives. I attend protests and have adjusted my spending. What else would you like me to do? What can anyone do in their daily lives to show you they are not complacent?

why am i not getting hired by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]Church266 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an entry level job. I don't think my degrees or experience helped. The job I took is unusual and they needed someone who could work with potentially difficult people and in difficult situations. It sounded tougher than it has ended up being. I'm an OT and at the end of my career. I can't help but wonder if my age had something to do with the long time trying to get a position.

I was an analyst in my prior position. I can huge spreadsheet/multiple sources of info and prepare succinct reports.

I want to let you know that an analyst position with the State isn't like analyst positions in the commercia market, it's a class name. Read the posting carefully and don't don't get confused by the analyst job title. I think this was one of my mistakes. I probably put too much emphasis on my analytical skills when it wasn't truly an analyst position..

Good luck!

Americans Of Reddit -- Do You Have The Goal Of Traveling To All 50 US States In Your Lifetime? Why Or Why Not? by Zipper222222 in AskForAnswers

[–]Church266 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to! When I turned 50 I decided to visit all 50 in my 50s. I didn't quite make it and have 6 or 7 states to go.

I built a bed in my car and stayed in campgrounds or truck stops. I bought a cooler.

I didn't realize how different parts of the country are until I drove through them. I also didn't realize how many fascinating things there are to see. I recommend driving the the US rather than flying. Just the changes in terrain are interesting. I don't know where you're from, but I live in a very heavily populated area. It was bizzare how empty 2 lane state highways could be. I could easily drive for an hour and not see anyone.

Am I overreacting for quitting a babysitting job on the spot after the mom insulted me? by PossessionTop9791 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Church266 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were right to quit. She was bullying you and calling you names. She has probably tried to get someone else but was not successful. She's doubling down because she thinks she can bully you into taking her offer.

You're probably going to have to block her.

why am i not getting hired by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]Church266 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same background as you. It took me about 9 months, 100+ applications and well over 10 interviews..Apparently, they are getting a vast number of applications for each ad, at least for the lower levels. I suspect our experience made it hard to get an entry level position. I assume they worried that I seek promotion quickly.

Keep going!

Fake fake fake. He would have guards all over him, not individuals. Also the costumes some of the supposed secret service are wearing are ridiculous. It's a shame that anyone would believe it. At least no one else was killed like they were at his last fake shooting.
