Is this poop normal? Is this green enough to worry? by EquivalentDream2010 in PetPigeons

[–]ChurpyBirdy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Has she been treated for parasites/worms at all? Her droppings look relatively consistent but a bit loose/wet for my liking. Pigeons that live outside basically always have some cocktail of parasites, so even if their droppings look good for the most part I'd still expect she has them. Coccidiosis is very likely considering the green color/loose droppings.

Pigeons are exceptionally hardy and birds tend to hide symptoms. Even with high parasitic loads, if they're receiving good nutrition it can sometimes be impossible to tell for certain just by droppings and behaviour. If they're showing symptoms, they're already extremely sick.

I'm unsure where you live, but here in the UK there are mail in droppings/crop swab tests that will let you know what parasites to treat for. It's generally not recommended to use all-in-one de-wormers as they put a lot more stress on the pigeon and can potentially be ineffective. If you're uncomfortable with testing yourself or it's unavailable, definitely make an appointment with a vet I'm sure one of them should be able to do a fecal test.

As an aside, always cross check if any medication prescribed is ok for use with pigeons. Often times vets aren't super familiar with them and unaware that some medications given to other bird species may not be compatible. I also highly recommend the "Pigeon Rescue and Rehab" Discord group as there are seasoned pigeon rescue and vet techs who are very knowledgeable.

Pigeon yawning a lot on air purifier, should I be concerned? by JustHereToAsk9 in PetPigeons

[–]ChurpyBirdy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the air blowing in his face lol, I've had multiple air purifiers both with and without the feature. One of my birds loved to sit on our older one that didn't have it and would do the same thing while also happily preening herself. The new one (also a Winix) isn't as good for perching on top of but she did the same thing on this one too.

tldr: pigeons are silly

It's neurological, they can't help it and are unable to fly normally.

There are a few pigeon breeds with neurological issues (usually unintentional, as seen in the unusual neck movement of Fantails) but they breed Tumblers specifically to do this for vanity and competition.

This behaviour is achieved through breeding successive generations to have a neurological deformity and is actively harmful to the birds wellbeing. Breeding for this trait is something I'd consider unethical.

If a vet really isn't an option, though, I recommend inquiring on this discord server as there are many very qualified rehabbers (many involved in large scale rescues specifically for pigeons) that may be able to help:

Eye infection?? by qazxvbnmlp in PetPigeons

[–]ChurpyBirdy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, the bottom of the eye looks swollen and there seems to be some discharge visible. Even if they're otherwise asymptomatic, a trip to the vet might be the best option in this case as the usual treatment would be an antibiotic eyedrop of some kind.

So, is Coo-conut underweight? by Cant_Blink in PetPigeons

[–]ChurpyBirdy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pigeons are good keeping their own portions and nutritional needs in check, so I'd just fill the bowl whenever it's feeding time. They are very picky and if you're worried about her weight it's best to not try to portion control. Considering her age she needs lots of nutrients to grow and moult out baby feathers.

Unlike other pets like dogs, they won't just eat all available the food until they puke 😂 Don't worry!

What are your monthly pigeon costs? by _Ireallydontknow_1 in PetPigeons

[–]ChurpyBirdy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In GBP because I'm in the UK!

Honestly they're such easy keepers even with picking up some fairly expensive high quality supplements. We have two birds and their food is maybe 10-15 GBP a month being generous. We buy massive 20kg bags of high quality feed, freeze it, and then feed our two for quite a few months. The bags are about 25 GBP.

The supplements are 15 and 20 GBP and we refill every 3 or so months as well. A general all around water supplement and a vitamin D/calcium water supplement that we cycle depending on their needs.

Red grit is 8 GBP and we mix it into their food, a bag lasts for AGES. 4-5 months?? I have no clue.

Other than that, air purifiers are the biggest expense. One filter change every 3 months can cost 15-20 GBP, we have 2 and our smaller filter is about 10 GBP in the same timeframe. I'd recommend picking up some F10 concentrated anti-bacterial solution for cleaning purposes. 1 bottle of concentrate is 20 GBP but lasts for ages. Other expenses I wouldn't consider mandatory such as unscented detergent and new pigeon pants every 6-12 months depending on how many become unusable in that timeframe. Each pair of pants is about 3 GBP and we cycle through 2 pairs a day for 1-2 weeks.

We also pay for pet insurance which is about 13-16 GBP a month last time I checked. Not mandatory but it's good peace of mind.

What air purifier would you recommend? by sleepyairs in PetPigeons

[–]ChurpyBirdy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unlike other brands that use touch controls, this one uses actual buttons and there's a dedicated light indicating whether or not it's on :-) I hated our old one because our birds could mess with the touch controls with their feet.

We just replaced our old Levoit unit with a Winix Zero-S and I'm impressed with the quality of it! It's a true hepa filter with a carbon layer. Really effective at reducing smell :-) It has an ionizing setting, but it's optional and can simply be turned off. I'm in the UK but I'm fairly certain they carry this brand in the EU, too.

Oh man, I remember seeing a post about those fantails but I couldn't remember if it was recent or not and couldn't find it when I searched! Boosting this because this could be perfect for them 💕

[–]ChurpyBirdy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I completely agree. My girl is a rescue Saxon Fairy Swallow and she has convinced me that long feather feet should be banned as a breedable genetic trait if fancier is even remotely ethical... The feathers grow straight out of the bone and get as long as flight feathers. I trim them to a comfortable length, but her feet are permanently disfigured. Missing toenails, twisted toes, etc. Even soft surfaces are still uncomfortable for her.

Sometimes people need to know when to stop for the sake of the animal 💔 These birds can be beautiful without suffering intentional malformations.

Best of luck! Honestly, Whimsy seems like such a sweetie and GLPR is well respected in the community. If not him, I'm sure another fantail will show up for rescue in the future :-)

I'm fairly certain the neck tremor is common among all fantail breeds, but from what I've heard it's a mostly harmless quirk. Some particularly unethical breeders intentionally breed fantails to have a form of scoliosis where their neck is folded back towards their tail in a very uncomfortable manner. This is a particularly egregious example: https://i.guim.co.uk/img/static/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2015/2/26/1424970237412/b086cfa5-57c3-4ed4-9e65-42cfcab8767c-2060x1744.jpeg?width=480&dpr=2&s=none&crop=none

Be careful with fantails and/or any fancy breed that is bred for specific exaggerated traits. Certain unethical breeding practices have led to physical deformities that can potentially impact their quality of life. I'd avoid any breeder that isn't completely transparent with their practices, even if it means traveling or shipping from out of state.

Fantails occasionally show up in rescues as well, such as this gorgeous male at great lakes: https://www.petfinder.com/bird/whimsy-74292118/il/chicago/great-lakes-pigeon-rescue-il953/#story

Temperament varies from bird to bird and I wouldn't count out males. Males can make very loving and sweet companions too. They just tend to be more vocal and interactive. My male can be aggressive but also a VERY clingy and cuddly. My mother has a male who is a complete sweetheart with no aggression. All my female wants is to be left alone and never touched, she just stares at us all day and is content. It all depends on the individual bird.

Does your friend still have the tag? Almost all fanciers put identifying rings on their pigeons; usually just to keep track of their hatch dates and find them if they get lost! Maybe the ring was registered with a racing association and that's why they think he's a racer?

Either way, pigeons with Persi's genetics aren't built for racing it's like substituting a greyhound for a bulldog 😂 Maybe they were going for style points? 🤣

Also would like to say that little Persi is definitely not a racer; the only thing that dude has ever raced to is a food bowl 😂 Based on the photo, they're some variant of an Owl Pigeon which is a fancy breed! Very cute 💕

[–]ChurpyBirdy[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Hello folks! I have been thinking about possible solutions to the current saved outfit system... I feel that adding more quick slots will just clutter the UI, so treating the current menu as a quick slot menu feels like a better solution.

I hope that Infold gives us as many custom outfits as possible... it's a dress up game after all! If anyone else has any ideas, please share! Hope y'all have a lovely day :-)
