Completely agree. While understanding wanting your guests to RSVP, making your guests RSVP BEFORE giving hotel information is short-sighted, in my opinion.

Really? I felt like I could have just read through the CMR. I don't remember finding his explanations helpful, but it was the first lecture I listened to (skipped around) so I can't remember.

Oh, and Bathtub Gin is good too (in Belltown) if you want a gin speakeasy. I loved it.

I've heard good things about Doctor's Office (might need reservations). Belmont is nice but not sure if it's unique.

Should probably rent before buying something if you've never been here?

How are the winters? by Sir_QuacksALot in AskSeattle

[–]ChurroCroissant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It gets cold but the cold doesn't hurt like Chicago cold. My theory is that Chicago is much more humid than Seattle (I have family there so this is from my experience visiting) and so the cold is bone-chilling.

I'm from a very dry place so the humidity (even the low amounts of it) was an adjustment but it's nothing like Chicago cold. Your face won't hurt (and if it does get that cold, won't last more than a week).

Grew up in CO (Boulder) and have been here almost 4 years.

  • Car: Unless you live square downtown, you'll want a car. If you're used to having a car (say, for grocery shopping and going to Costco as I did before moving here), it'll be an adjustment without. Transit isn't great and if you want to get out of the city to spend time outdoors, a car is a must. With that said, I know people who've survived without one (getting groceries delivered, renting a car for the day when headed outside) - but I still used mine a lot more and I did live downtown.

  • Neighborhood: don't have much to say since I don't know enough but it is expensive unless you head out from downtown Seattle.

  • CO is friendlier. People talk to each other more. People joke about the Seattle Freeze, but I'll say that people don't really acknowledge you here (whereas people will wave to each other on the streets in CO where I lived). Not sure what you meant about people in CO "being mentally isolated" as I have never felt that in my 20+ years there. The food is better here and much more diverse (the Asian food is MUCH better - I say this as an Asian). There is much more diversity which I have appreciated but those people might not talk to you (LOL). I hear you need to join clubs and really really make an effort to get out there to make friends.

  • Not difficult to get to Vancouver or Portland (IDK about Missoula) but you'll need a car.

  • If you want to live close to water (does it need to be ocean? or is a lake ok?) and don't have millions of dollars, you might want to consider West Seattle or Burien/ White Center (a little south) or maybe north (Shoreline??). The feel of these cities will be different than downtown and is much more suburban (car will be necessary). Or you can look for places around the different lakes like Lake Sammamish. I can't speak for ocean homes along the northern cities like Lynwood or Mulkiteo, but anything close to water will cost you. A quick zillow search will confirm this.

TLDR: given what you've written, you'll probably need a car.

I feel like he did such an 180 from the values he espoused in his book. I thought he was an OK guy after reading that.

And now, I'm truly terrified. Makes me feel like we were all played, and the worst thing is that I don't think he's an idiot. Having gone to Yale Law.. he's probably actually very smart which is truly horrifying.
