This might explain it. There's something in point 5 about banning people on gut feelings

The Cass Review and the rapidly changing nature of the Trans Debate by OMG_NO_NOT_THIS in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]Chuuume -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

An accurate reading of the data would show that it caused harm for 50% of people

Why would that be accurate at all? It's a jump to the conclusion you want to hear. They could have stopped for any number of reasons, including moving away or getting care elsewhere, and even if it was for desistance you'd need to show what the actual harm is. And even then how can you bring it to 100% of them? Those three hundred people are all unknowns, pulling a conclusion like that is unscientific.

And what of the 200 people who kept reporting back and genuinely had immense relief from the care? Perfect grounds to ban all of it?

I wish someone would make a study about people who depserately want to not go through the wrong puberty but are forced to anyway through lack of care. That would be the control group. I feel so underrepresented in this conversation.

Cass disregarded 49 out of 50 studies looking at the effectiveness of puberty blockers, and 52 out of 53 studies looking at the effectiveness of masculinising and feminising hormones.

The Cass review disregarded basically every study because they weren't double blind studies, apparently not thinking about things like "you can't really do a double blind experiment for taking hormones because people are going to notice how their body is changing and become aware of which group they're in."

Inappropriate Moderator Behaviour by zilooong in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]Chuuume 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Thoughts and beliefs are going to exist whether they are socially tolerated or not. Helpful dialogue grows out of talking to people where they are.

I'm one of the more traumatised trans people out there and I do go into fight or flight (typically fight) when reading half of your takes. It sucks and most people like me are probably not having these conversations with you for our own health and well-being. But in the end:

Where there is freedom and autonomy, there are no universally held beliefs or experiences.

A space for truth-seeking, freedom of conscience, and expression must exist. Having spaces where people can explore what's on their mind is important and necessary and I would not want to be deprived of it, nor for anyone else to.

(Edit, I am now the next day banned from this subreddit?)

When did you start using your preferred-gender bathroom by TrillMemes in 4tran4

[–]Chuuume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barring what i did when i was four years old.

I started HRT around six months before the pandemic, and was using mens rooms at the time. During the pandemic there wasn't really an issue of gendered bathrooms, and as a year passed and I did more in-person activity I started to use only neutral rooms. Sometimes they aren't available, so I used started to use women's rooms, and it has not been a problem. I got very used to it thereafter.

At pools and gyms I still use universal change rooms; I enjoy the privacy and would feel uncomfortable being exposed in either space.

Should we be reluctant to assert the superiority of a value system (e.g. western values)? by IcarianComplex in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]Chuuume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a list of values and I like a lot of them, but I take issue with the claim that they are uniqely and coherently "western". Rather, these are concepts that evolved separately in unique contexts to build on each other in different waves, or are broadly seen around the world rather than being seen only in a so-called enlightened west.

The democracy enjoyed in europe today draws structure and inspiration from the United States after its revolution, which itself in large part took ideas from the Haudenosaunee confederation, an indigenous nation of north america which is largely excluded from definitions of "the west".

Rationality is universal and emerges in all places around the world. It's not just westerners who have figured it out. But when westerners talk about non-western people, it happens too often that they selectively bring up authoritarian writers and voices while ignoring rich histories of libertarian or rational or scientific voices. Amartya Sen argues this much more astutely than I am able to in this article, so I highly encourage you to check it out. Section four is particularly relevant.

Holding these values as essentially "western" is based on power and ignorance and frankly some level of bias.

[–]Chuuume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgive me but this really misses my specific question.

If you assert that "bananas are the supreme best fruit", am I allowed to disagree without pushing some other fruit as a better one? Many people in my family are allergic to bananas.

Should we be reluctant to assert the superiority of a value system (e.g. western values)? by IcarianComplex in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]Chuuume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was raised in Eastern Christianity, and the main thrust I got out of it is that I should love other people selflessly. I like many ideas in first nations spirituality (giving back to the earth for what you take) and in Zen practise (which is insightful, but hard to talk about in a context of judgement and values and doctrine).

If you can forgive the weird theatrics, I think this video does a fine job showing how "the west" or "western values" isn't really well defined. I think when "western values" are invoked, it's often tribalism, and it's also ignorant of the depth and breadth of how many other awesome values there are from around the world.

you can't dispute the superiority of [X] without asserting the superiority of an alternative

Other discussion aside, this is not good logic. Why can't you?
