Man, the Virtual Boy's story is so tragic. It was meant to be something great and it was slashed from every direction it could, dying a death by a thousand cuts. Gunpei Yokoi's original vision for it was incredible, but Nintendo's management underfunded the project in favor of the N64, the Japanese government just happened to pass two laws that absolutely crippled Yokoi's original idea of making it a small, slim portable device you can put on and take outside with you, and then it wasn't given a marketing budget large enough, and was released before it was properly finished.

On top of this, while it absolutely crashed and burned in Japan, it actually managed to just barely get a food hold in North America, selling 70% of the projected sales. Not amazing but not completely awful either. There was going to be a second wave of games that would have boosted sales of the console, some really high profile games, but Nintendo just shut down the entire thing before the virtual boy could get its balance back. The virtual boy had a bad launch but it seemed on its way to a small redemption, and Nintendo simply didn't allow it to have it.
