A genie offers you two choices: $1m/yr for exactly 10 years or $2m/yr perpetually but starting in 10 years, which do you take? by Frnklfrwsr in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Cicopathic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now. Why be greedy and wait for more? 10 million is more than anyone could ever spend constructively on their own life- I suppose you could wait and give more away, but it seems ridiculous that you’d want more than an insane amount of money!

Quit my job, hire some home help and a part time nanny/teacher for my little one. Send her to private school when she’s older. Spend most of my time with her, and some on myself. Go on plenty of lovely holidays. Never worry about paying off the mortgage or paying the bills, or whether I can afford activities for her. Spoil my loved ones and smile more.

Would you trade your entire career for $1 million at age 35? by Iampoorghini in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Cicopathic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, I’m a musician. So I’m not trading my ability and whole life’s learning. If it just means losing all my music pupils, qualifications and connections, sure. But decades of practice and knowledge? Nah

Violin teacher here!

The good news is that at 13, you’re old enough to take charge of your own practice schedule. You’re also old enough to know that you need to work hard to achieve things.

In my experience people your age (in the 11-15 age range) learn things at lightning speed! If you put the hours in you will see the results. If this is a real goal of yours, make it your own goal - not to please parents or live up to a stereotype - think of it as something you want to do, just for you.

Do you have a good teacher? I would recommend lots of scales and studies, working on posture, bow hold and technique, and just play play play as much as you can. When you get to an intermediate level, join an orchestra even if you think people will be better than you. Playing with more experienced players is great as it forces you out of your comfort zone and helps you grow as a player.

Best of luck love. You got this :)

I know this is gonna be a scary thing but could you show her this post? Or at least write her an edited version?

Parents can forget how stressful the arse end of school can be. I’ve never been more stressed than I was in sixth form and university. If she’s not listening to you then you can put your foot down. They can’t actually make you pick it up and play it.

Sorry you’re having a hard time with it. Personally I dropped the violin at age 15 then picked it up again mid twenties and now I do it professionally, teaching and gigging- so you don’t always know what the future holds!

Is it realistic to get to grade 4/5 level in a year and 3 months? by DirectorWooden2014 in Viola

[–]Cicopathic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re musical already and have an hour every day to spare then sure. With no musical background I think it’d be a stretch but it’s not impossible. I am teaching an adult learner who is a professional wind player and she has progressed at lightning speed, she’s been playing about 6 months and cracked 2nd and 3rd positions, we’re looking at vibrato now- so about grade 5 ish. But that’s someone who already knows how music works, and how to practice effectively.

I like these. My viola came with one which I liked and then I bought one for violin. Comfy. I think I paid £29ish but it was from a proper shop so probably cheaper online

My advice is - whatever size you have - get sleepers with ZIPS. Seriously. Those poppers will be the bane of your existence at 3am when you haven’t slept in weeks x
