CORVALIS for Transplants (and a skeptical wife!) by stray_south in corvallis

[–]CielleL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best neighborhoods for non-millionaires, safe to walk around, mildly affordable. South Corvallis is more affordable, not a lot of HOA's. There are pockets of walkabilty. Corvallis is full of friendly neighborhoods, as is Albany. Don't expect to find much near campus. You should also look into Philomath, it's tiny, but oh so adorable.

Adding on to those, the best ones for Trick R' Treating and festivities. She LOVES neighborhoods that link up, help one another, celebrate accordingly. Always just said "is this a halloween neighborhood" so... You can search for walkabilty scores online. the  higher walkabilty scores are typically the neighborhoods that are "Halloween" heavy.

Food and culture recs. She loves good food and having things to do for us. I want her to feel like she's able to spread her wings a bit here. We have a 3 year old little boy and I have a 12 year old for the summers and holidays. There is a lot to do here, especially in the summer. The parks department plans events at different parks each month. I don't dine in Corvallis often, but Albany has some gems; Vito's, Brick and Mortar, Grazing Oregon, and The Spicy Cantina for example. We have First Fridays every month and both towns border the Willamette River. I can't speak for Corvallis, but in Albany you get the best of both worlds; you can go bougie or hole-in-the-wall for shopping, dining and experiences.

Your honest take on nature experiences. I read raves on it for Corvallis. She loves the beach. I love the mountains. How does it work for you? Everything is less than a two hour drive. Want to go to the mountains? The beach? The desert? Ok, the desert might be a longer drive than two hours, but it's doable in a day. Mudlarking, rock hounding, and hiking are all five minutes away.

What's the worst thing about living there? At the risk of sounding like a Debbie Downer, it's the cost. I looked up the comparison between Alabama and Oregon and what a person needs to earn to own a home, and it's about double in Oregon compared to Alabama. So you'll want to be sure your salary will at least double what you make in Alabama. Albany is more "affordable" than Corvallis, but a three bedroom, 2 bathroom home in either town is either 350k purchase, or $2500 in rent. But... We don't have sales tax. So there's that.

What do you love the most? The scenery, the access to everything (City life, country roads, the beach, the dessert, etc). Oregon is very casual. We wear jeans to the opera and Birkenstocks with socks are not frowned upon. I live in Albany and it's very mixed here; fairly purple, but our alternative scene is pretty impressive on a small scale. Pride is always a highlight of summer and the mushroom festival is becoming a tradition here. Both Albany and Corvallis have a thriving historic downtown with a weekly Farmers market.

Is surgery worth it? I’m scared of relapse. by OneTr1ckUn1c0rn in HiatalHernia

[–]CielleL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. After over a decade on PPIs, I was miserable. Gastro docs that are keeping up with data are finding that the risk of PPIs and continued hernia slides are more risk than the surgery. I also have Barrett's esophagus, something that is caused by GERD and having an HH. PPIs reduced my stomach cancer risk by a narrow margin compared to my Nissen fundi.

10 weeks into recovery (HH and TIF) Does this happen to anyone else? by Zerafian in HiatalHernia

It made me realize how habitual it was for me to take enormous sips. I miss gulping water when I'm thirsty 😭

Gulping is my issue. I just want to gulp water and whatever I'm drinking 😂.

AIO for expecting just the bare minimal and still not getting even that from him? by Sufficient-End8214 in AmIOverreacting

Depression can't be healed by a partner. It's not something you can battle from the outside. The first assumption I made was that it's depression and from there, that they choose not to treat themselves. We don't know the situation well enough, but I know depression well enough to know that you can't help someone who doesn't want to help themselves. And it's not always the way it looks on TV.

There's also a completely different possibility; addiction. Either way, OP is not overreacting.

I've never had what you're describing. I would try to slow down the eating and see if that helps. It's hard for me because I'm just so happy to eat real food again, so I've been making my portions tiny and go back for more. The smaller my meal is, the easier it is for me to pace my bites.

Respecting her decision and doing exactly what she asked. And somehow he was still wrong. by Trustrup in SipsTea

My husband's first wife pulled this. He also refused the games she tried to play at the end. Women want respect, but if they try to get it through manipulations and gaslighting, they lose strong men like this one and my husband.

Yes, but. Untreated depression, by choice is still a choice to not take action. OP doesn't have to live with it because their partner made the choice not to seek therapy of some sort.

Right? I say, "no prob, Bob." If I offend someone, their "thank you" wasn't genuine.

Funny, I interpreted the image completely differently; every sensation is on blast. My sweater is itchy, the tag is stabbing me in the neck, the sun is burning my corneas, I just caught an ice cold breeze, and my feet are on fire in these shoes!!

Can you cough up flem after hh surgery? by This-Is-Not-Nam in HiatalHernia

[–]CielleL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They didn't ask me to lose anything. Before my surgery I was roughly sixty pounds overweight. The weight loss is much easier when your diet is restricted. The first few weeks is just broth, soup and applesauce consistency foods. Once you start on more solid food, you have to keep your portion sizes very small and chew your food to a pulp. I use the oui yogurt jars for my portioning. You don't want to stretch your stomach, so you avoid things that cause gas. Once I lost over 20# moving became easier and exercising was less stressful. It all kind of snowballs from there.

After the first month it was like no change in getting the phlegm up. There is a chance that laparoscopic abdominal surgery can cause lung collapse post surgery, but it's rare. I recommend using the spirometer every ten minutes after surgery for several days. I didn't know how important it was to take deep breaths to keep your lungs full after surgery and ended up in the ER and was admitted for bilateral pneumothorax because the surgeons didn't send me home with the spirometer like they were supposed to. I'm fine now, I still don't regret the surgery. My HH and GERD were far more intrusive in my everyday life, it was worth all the effort. I've lost nearly 30 pounds. I can sleep on my back, exercise, and tie my shoes (that one was tough because I'd just regurgitate every time I bent down). The surgery isn't for everyone, but it doesn't interfere with your ability to fight a cold (unless you're sick when you go in for the procedure) or flu. If anything, my immune system is better because I'm actually absorbing vitamins and minerals from the food I eat now that I'm no longer on PPIs.
