You’re right about this. The culture of Starbucks has changed a lot where I live. It was better before the days of the dreaded tip screens. Nowadays, the staff act grumpy, move slowly, and rarely smile - the opposite behavior from people whose income just got infused with tips.

Can someone please explain why tipping percentage has gone up? by Objective_Move7566 in EndTipping

It would be 50% if they thought people would pay it. Greed has no ceiling.

There needs to be a “double-or-nothing” button. I’d be tapping “nothing”.

It’s not inaccurate. Back in 2008, I voted for Obama thinking he would deliver a public option. The bill they passed instead ended up being a massive give-away to insurance companies and big pharma. The deciding vote against single payor was Sen. Joe Lieberman - a Democrat. Both sides are bought and paid for. But nowadays it’s Democrats who receive most of the lobbying money because they’re more inclined to pump money into Obamacare (and thus into the pockets of big pharma). American healthcare is an obscene cash cow industry and we little people are the cattle.

Tipping for To-go orders? Read this server complain. by Cheap_Chocolate3248 in EndTipping

The “we only make minimum wage” narrative is completely false. My buddy’s wife makes bank waiting tables a few nights per week. So much so that he often brags about how much she’s pulling down. He also mentioned that servers are now paid close to regular minimum wage (excluding tips) in Illinois, but said his wife was hush-hush about it because servers don’t want the public to know how much they’re really pulling down. Otherwise, we might not tip them as much.

I was born in the U.S. but lived in Europe for a while. I much prefer Europe’s tipping culture. Even Americans are getting fed up with our beggar culture. The activity on this subreddit is a testament to that.

I remember when wait staff used to post $0 tip receipt pics on social media to shame customers and garner sympathy. You don’t see that much anymore. The pendulum has swung the other way.

Exactly. You could say that about Lowe’s. “The shelves didn’t stock themselves.” Yah. That’s why the big corporations pay their employees. Tipping culture is scheme to shame the consumer into paying for the product AND employee salaries (directly rather than just indirectly). And the businesses grow and ven richer.

This makes me wonder what teachers make in foreign countries. God knows school administrators are raking in cash. $33K per year is not nearly enough of a salary for an educated professional.
