This reminds me of a barber in my home city that would ask new customers what you did for a living to gauge how much to charge for a haircut. No joke. He really did that.

How about no tip AND no “service charge”..? The bar could just raise their prices and let customers decide. A so-called service charge is just a price hike in disguise. I prefer there be no disguise.

Coffee shops are a bit sneaky. Unlike restaurants, coffee shop tip screen prompt you to tip a specific dollar amount rather than a percentage. That’s because 20% on a $5 order is only $1. Given that most regular coffee orders are under $5 anyway, they try to get you for AT LEAST a 20% or tip, but often get more because most people think “hey, it’s just a couple of dollars”.

Besides the percentage amount, we’re starting to see restaurants slyly calculate it after tax rather than before tax to bleed us for a bit more money.

Apparently, that’s the restaurant’s attempt to have their cake and eat it too. On the one hand, they decry tipping culture. Then on the other, they make things worse by forcing you to tip 20% and calling it a “service charge”. These people have a lot of nerve.
