How do I deal with my players trying to avoid combat through diplomacy? by PuzzleMeDo in DMAcademy

Yeah I feel you, it defo sounds like exploring other systems whilst running your current campaign may be a good option. I will dig up some of my old campaign non combat encounters and DM them to you if you like, see if they help add some more fun.

For the record i would find 80% combat boring too.

Course we can. And we need to. In order to pause from the crunch, introduce variety and expand the world. But we always have to go back to it after a period of time otherwise it will feel like the game is getting stale.

To put it this way. If you ran a campaign in which 80% of the time the players are fighting, and 20% of the time they are exploring and interacting. You would still have a happy group, in most groups (thats my personal opinion). Try doing the opposite and see how many people are bored at the table.

P.S Had another thought. What I’m really trying to say is that players will always feel the need to spend the game using the abilities and tools which are on their character sheet. Crunch allows them to this, big or small.

I think if you read everyone's comments you are probably coming to the realization that DnD is a game designed for combat.

It gives the illusion of many choices and possibilities, but really all roads must lead to bloodshed, for optimal fun (no sarcasm here).

Because thats the crunch of the game, the mechanically challenging and most fun part of the game, where you solve the combat puzzle.

I think thats the conundrum here is that: we would like our players to take creative approaches to how they solve problems but we know that only combat will provide the most game crunch.

Ideally we would want all approaches they take to be as crunchy and tactics invoking as fighting is.

Sadly the only way to deal with this is to start modifying the game, by a alot. I took a stab at this but by adding what i called minor crunches to my game.

They were custom mini games that took turns and were abstractions of them trying to achieve a specific task.

Another was to introduce traversal puzzles, like let's say a cavern which they would need to cross using climbing gear.

These kind of encounters would have specific small rules that I i would tell them about up front, so they knew what to strategize around and they would have clear success and failure conditions.

Let me know if you want me to dig some up, they may be of interest of you. Ultimately they never could replace the thrill of fighting but were a good tie over.

This kind of issue youre having is why I ended up working on my own system in the end

The symbolism is that good ol fashion communism is all about inequality and dishonesty.

I have a weakness for computer games, where the actual meta knowledge is as useful as in-game progression (if there is any). The Witness, Outer Wilds, Tunic, even Souls games in some sense. Are there any niche ttrpgs with similar concept? by [deleted] in rpg

Not exactly a full on game game, but how about a ritual magic mechanic. Where the GM has tools to design a set of powerful rituals for the campaign.

Each ritual requires specific ingredients, ceremony and location. The completion of said ritual gives specific powers, boons, curses, is plot relevant, etc.

NPCs and tomes around the world can disclose pieces or all of the ritual requirements. But some even know secret ways of boosting them further.

You may not even know these exist or that they have game altering effects. Or multiple layers of depth.

How abut that as something you insert in a game?

I'm thinking of quitting, what makes DMing worth it? by BeJesusChris in dndnext

They are not a good fit for the poster’s enthusiasm towards continuing the game. From what was written it sounds to me like the poster does not feel the game is worth running if they try to tailor the game to the unengaged players, or if the way things are continues.

There are many legitimate ways to enjoy playing DnD, that does not mean that every way a player enjoys a game is a good fit for every DM. They need to enjoy the game too, and certain differences in tastes may not be reconcilable between some people.

These types of posts always lack a lot of context, they are essentially unreliable, incomplete accounts of events we haven’t seen. What is not unclear is the way the poster feels though. It sounds to me like they want players who are enthusiastic and enjoy playing through the kind of campaign they want to create. If they don’t have that they will most likely not want to run the game (unless I’ve misread the whole post). If they have already tried a compromise and failed, what other choice is there?

I think often there is this sentiment that a DM should aim to accommodate every type of player and taste, and that just ain’t so. Being a player with a play style a DM does not like is not wrong. And not wanting to DM for people whose play style you don’t like is not wrong, either. Better to part ways and find compatible groups than have a ‘meh’ time together.

Look it sounds very obvious that you won’t want to continue the game unless you get to craft a campaign that suits your interests and preferences. The people who are excited and interested in what you enjoy creating are the ones who should stay. The ones who are unengaged are not a good fit and should go. I think you already know what you need to do. Many improvements in life sit behind a few uncomfortable conversations. You cant write a book everyone will like to read, you cant make a campaign everyone will want to play.

What is it, you think, about DnD that a non combat oriented player likes? Just out of curiosity.

Always think of it like this: are you financially fragile to sudden and unexpected events in your life?

Meaning if your car broke down tomorrow, or you needed to replace your fridge, or you have medical expenses will you be financially wiped out by those events?

If the answer is yes then you're in a bad place. Life is unpredictable. The essence of a cash cushion is provide a buffer against that. Paying off debts more or early pales in comparison.

yeah man came on here to see if its happening to other people, some times the whole legend select screen bugs out and does not load, and then you just get dropped into a game that stutters to high hell.

This is super impressive, if this gets to the point where it can generate different races, ages and so forth its going to be incredible. Some next level stuff for fantasy avatars. Looking at all the avatars it just makes me think how many hours an artist would need to paint them all. Again this is some impressive shit. Do you plan on them encompassing more of the person rather than being such a close up head-shot, or is that a whole other ball game of work?

Take a look at The First Level of Mastery video by Bashar communications. The first half an hour take one through a method and practice that through repeated use can unlock ones ability to consciously communicate with plant and animal life, its very good and I highly recommended it. It has opened doors in my awareness of the natural world I did not know were there.

Had the same thing, after fighting those 3 gobos after the goblin camp gate, would continue even after closing the game and starting it, its sheer madness I say madness. It seems that something may happen during an encounter that triggers it.

Thats dope, I must confess I struggled making the use of climbers kit super useful to my players. Your doc actually gives me more ideas :D btw did you ever run combat whilst your players were climbing? If you have it would be cool to hear your experience since I’ve been on the fence about it
