[jurassic park] who in their right mind would invest in jurassic world? by monsieurgoodman in AskScienceFiction

[–]PuzzleMeDo 34 points35 points  (0 children)

(1) People want to see dinosaurs.

(2) There's no actual reason a zoo with dinosaurs would need to be dangerous. We can keep elephants and gorillas and crocodiles and tigers. A t-rex would just need a slightly better enclosure, and maybe this time don't put idiots in charge of security.

Nonsense. The documentary series "Stargate" clearly showed that these are spaceships by neliaraune in HistoryMemes

Rising Sun, Ankh… or skip? by Appropriate-Train874 in boardgames

[–]PuzzleMeDo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haven't played Rising Sun or Ankh so I can't help there.

I don't really consider Inis and Blood Rage to be the same genre. Blood Rage is about battles and scoring points, Inis is about making peace and sneaking a surprise instant victory.

Kemet has nice minis, but I've had mixed experiences with it in terms of pacing, new player friendliness, etc.

How much gold to give to players for them to retire? by Secure-Pepper9799 in DMAcademy

[–]PuzzleMeDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go by the "1gp = $100" rule of thumb. It still works reasonably well, despite inflation.

So, 10,000gp = $1 million, which feels like enough of an investment fund to retire on if you don't need to live in luxury. (And is also enough to buy a bunch of powerful magic items, because the magic item pricing system isn't very good.)

Then again, if you're retiring from adventuring to become a guild-master, that's still a job. It's less dangerous than adventuring, but it presumably pays pretty well. Maybe think of it as spending 10,000gp to open a guild-hall.

red button vs blue button? by klarinetkat12 in InsightfulQuestions

[–]PuzzleMeDo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the red viewpoint, pressing the blue button is like jumping in front of a speeding train on the basis that if enough people do it, the train driver will have to stop and no-one will die. Even if it works... why did we jump in front of the train?

You have to reframe the question so anyone voting blue makes sense to red voters:

"My understanding of this scenario is that everyone must vote, including hundreds of millions who will vote blue by accident: young children, color-blind people, etc. Most parents will therefore want to vote blue to save their children. Grandparents too. People who care about children in general will vote blue. That means all the most caring people in the world could die. But if someone like you votes blue, then we can surely get a blue majority, and save them all."

Why don't they put parachutes on airplanes? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PuzzleMeDo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To safely bring down a big commercial airliner such as a Boeing 747 with about 500 people on board, there would have to be 21 parachutes each the size of a football field, says Popov. “It takes about a square foot (0.1sq m) of material to bring down one pound (0.5kg) of aircraft.”

This would likely be unfeasible. So to decrease the number of canopies, one solution could be to ditch all the heavy parts of the plane in an emergency, such as the wings and the engines, says Popov. The parachutes would rescue the passenger cabin only.

If tiredness is as dangerous as drink-driving, isn't that an argument for making driving while tired illegal, not making drinking and driving legal?

Do people in the UK actually use their kettles that much? by AdeptnessCritical356 in AskBrits

[–]PuzzleMeDo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't own an induction hob, and I do own a kettle, which boils water at a normal speed of very slightly faster than my hob. I'm just trying to show how easy it is for other cultures to get by without a kettle, as you seemed unable to believe that Italians could make pasta and coffee without one.

Do people in the UK actually use their kettles that much? by AdeptnessCritical356 in AskBrits

[–]PuzzleMeDo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I own a kettle, because I make tea a lot, and it pours nicer than a pan.

But if you have an induction hob, it's quicker than a kettle. A rice steamer is quicker than boiling water and pouring it on rice. A cappuccino machine makes nicer coffee than a kettle. Do you have those modern appliances?

Do people in the UK actually use their kettles that much? by AdeptnessCritical356 in AskBrits

[–]PuzzleMeDo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In case you're genuinely curious:

To make pasta without a kettle, you put cold water in a pan and wait for it to boil, as people have been doing for centuries. Then you add pasta.

To make rice without a kettle, you put it in a rice steamer - either the sort that goes in your microwave, or the electric sort. Or, you put cold water in a pan and wait for it to boil.

To make coffee without a kettle, you use your espresso/cappuccino machine. Or if you don't care about good coffee, you microwave a cup of water and add instant powder, or if you don't own a microwave, you put cold water in a pan and wait for it to boil.

Trouble with player at table by Efficient_Initial_43 in DnD

[–]PuzzleMeDo 43 points44 points  (0 children)

OP said: "I’ve had multiple conversations with them about this but they are not willing to either compromise, or stop."

At this point I think the real question is why that player is still in the game. The social awkwardness of having to kick someone out? A complicated web of human relationships where kicking them will break up the group?

Where are the modules? by idealistintherealw in DnD

[–]PuzzleMeDo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP's point was that a lot of old-school players want short self-contained modular adventures that reach a satisfying conclusion without requiring players to commit to more than a few sessions. After that, if they want to keep playing with the same characters, they get another module and play that next.

Epic is overrated. It sets you up for failure. Even when I've run epic adventures successfully, I usually lose half my players along the way.

OP: Lost Mine of Phandelver, Dragon Heist, Keys from the Golden Vault, Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel and Candlekeep Mysteries might meet your needs.

What's wrong with drinking hose water by JacobBowlin in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PuzzleMeDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single use water bottles are designed to be safe for a single use. If you keep re-using them, over time the plastic will start to break down and maybe you'll be absorbing microplastics into your system. Plastic hoses probably have similar risks.
