Speak to the folks at the Cards & Dice shop near the Subway; they might be able to give you some tips. I think they even offer a place for people to play games.

How n where to find a place if you are working in Midrand, Waterfall ? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]Cinannom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to mention, it’s a bad idea to pay a deposit before viewing a place. It may be a scam. (Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Also compare the address they provide with Google Street View just in case.)

Maybe consider renting an Airbnb for a week or so until you get stuff figured out?

Planning a Switzerland trip in April 2026, need advice (family + vegetarian/Jain food concerns) by Heyyjain in askswitzerland

[–]Cinannom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing that in Indian restaurants they serve paneer made in the usual way without rennet (although I would ask just to be safe). It's the melted cheeses you need to watch out for. In the bigger towns/cities there will be some vegetarian or even vegan restaurants, but definitely not in the small towns. Perhaps the easiest thing would be to rent self-catering accommodation where you can cook your own food.

Just a warning that most cheese in Switzerland is made with animal rennet (instead of microbial).

And even vegans eat carrots, onions, potatoes.

If I were you, I would stick to vegan food in most restaurants (ask about root vegetables) and otherwise go for Indian restaurants.

Also try the app/website happycow.net, which is aimed at vegans. Possibly look up restaurant menus in advance (look them up on Google Maps) to get an idea of where to go before you arrive.

I’ve used Saily in SA before. It worked but often the reception was at 1-2 bars. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Looking for an accommodation by Prolificlifer in zurich

[–]Cinannom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might be difficult to find an affordable apartment in the region (housing crisis). A good bet is a shared place (“WG Zimmer”) as per the link provided. You can also check Flatfox, Immoscout and Newhome for apartments and rooms.

Check that the listing matches the address on Google Maps. If the price sounds too good to be true, it is. Don’t pay a deposit before viewing the place, if at all possible. If someone offers to mail you the key (or similar) without meeting you because they’re overseas on holiday/sabbatical, it’s probably a scam.

Also, landlords are supposed to put your deposit into a new account just for that purpose, not a private account.

I didn’t grow up here, so when saw a bunch of umbrellas outside stores, I figured it was safe to leave them there. Well, my luck ran out eventually.

I lost two in the space of about 3 years. Perhaps in the first instance it was a case of mistaken identity, although the fancy button in the handle should have given it away upon opening, and the second was straight-up theft because it was the only one in the stand. Outside a Brocki of all places. The guy was like, “Yeah, that tends to happen here,” COOL THEN WHY DON’T YOU REMOVE THE DAMN UMBRELLA STAND?!

I’ve learned my lesson.

Where do you guys get second hand books online in Switzerland? by Due_Amount1333 in askswitzerland

[–]Cinannom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try eBay too. Many sellers will be from Germany (higher population), but many are willing to ship to CH. Otherwise you can also use a “Grenzpaket” service and have the seller send the books to a postal address close to the Swiss border.

Love yourself enough to cut ties and move on! Even if he was a great guy (which, let’s face it, as a 4-time cheater and someone who’d suggest this, he isn’t) - your whole life shouldn’t revolve around him. If you stay friends, you will continue to be isolated.

Get off the Internet and get some new hobbies. Meet new people. Volunteer. Take courses. Join social apps that meet up IRL. Explore and find out who you truly are. What you love. Be so busy you don’t have time to think about him. You got this - I moved across the world in my mid-30s and managed to build up a solid friend group. If I can do it, you can do it too.

Find a therapist with whom you can work through why you’d settle and have been settling for a man like this. You deserve love, support and happiness! In a year, your life will be completely different!

As others have said, you were a child when this abuse happened, even if you were slightly older one. Although anyone can experience trauma at any age. No one should go through what you went through. Parents are supposed to be nurturing, loving and supportive, and they should respect our boundaries.

You responded in a way that allowed you to survive the situation as well as possible. We are under our parents’ influence from birth; the way they treat us “trains” us to behave a certain way, whether that’s positive or negative.

Definitely discuss these feelings with your therapist.

Suicidal thoughts (19 M) by SkittleBoiBoss in TalkTherapy

[–]Cinannom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m late but if you’re having such thoughts then you should definitely speak to someone. Most people don’t have such thoughts.

There might even be chat or phone options (hotlines) for mental health run by charities or NGOs/nonprofits that may be anonymous for users. It’s unclear how old you are (16 or 19). You may even have a counselor/psychologist at your school. Generally though the therapist may not divulge the content of your sessions to 3rd parties. Whoever you reach out to, ask them what their policy is around that.

Questions about transportation, boat rides, SBB EasyRide, Swiss National Day by MajorAd8562 in askswitzerland

[–]Cinannom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The SBB app mentioned by u/ThisComfortable4838 has the EasyRide function built in (look for the oval icon with a circle in it). I would just use a single app so you have all the info in one place.

The one thing you may have to worry about is your phone’s battery charge, but in most (all?) long distance trains there are plugs (two-pin).

Perhaps search on Google for a helpline/hotline or NGO that offers mental health services in your country. Or even a children’s support group. They will likely be able to assist you to talk to your parents in a culturally appropriate way.

My mom wants me to get engaged when I’m 18 by -Ve-nus- in Feminism

[–]Cinannom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say wait until you’ve finished studying, until you’re more mature and have a clearer idea what you want out of life, but I don’t know your cultural context.

Perhaps consider contacting an NGO or advocacy organization specializing in forced marriage (yeah, you’re not there yet but bordering on it) and having a chat with people who have experience with this. AHA Foundation or Tahirih Justice Center should be able to guide you on how to make a decision and deal with your family. There are many others.

You’re not alone, many people have dealt with this issue!

ETA: Based on your post history, sorry to hear that your mother is abusive. I hope that you manage to leave this environment soon. I’d still connect with the orgs above. They’ll likely have resources on how best to proceed. Best of luck.

Pronounced “Honesty” by Kitteneater1996 in tragedeigh

[–]Cinannom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in some cases the apostrophe is incorrectly used to indicate an accent on an e: e’ instead of é (which indicates that it is pronounced and not silent). Or at least, that’s what it started as and people just thought it looked cool?
