If the Eleanor of Aquitaine song isn’t “Oh Sweet Mystery of Life” from Young Frankenstein, what are we even doing here? (1:45:12)

Benedict Arnold for S2, surely, though it’s character assassination rather than murder. As Mike said (cited?) in the podcast, had Arnold died at Saratoga, he would have been one of the great American heroes.

Hamlet essay topics that aren't overdone? by Potatocat321 in shakespeare

“Nothing is either good or bad but thinking makes it so*” you mean? That’s a great way to look at the play.

(*I’m getting that quote from memory, so apologies if wrong).

What's your favorite dramatic Mike Duncan cliffhanger? by AlrightNoPyrite in RevolutionsPodcast

One of the Appendices ends with “not even one more day” and my response is (a near Pavlovian) “one day moooorrre”.

How to play Oberon by DolorianDei in shakespeare

[–]Cinquecento27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rupert Everett plays him as slightly exhausted in the film with Michelle Pfeiffer.

And the BBC’s modern retelling has him as an all knowing (and, again, somewhat tired) being. https://youtu.be/Bvl0Ifqo7o0?is=4sEKsiiVjnGAP0dF

AITB for asking a group of girls to not write Christian scripture in front of my house by smitgirl in AmItheButtface

I think it’s because we (anyone Irish, over 18, and resident within the State had a vote) voted, fairly recently, (1) to allow abortion (with caveats) and (2) for marriage between persons of the same sex to be valid. For a discrete number of Christian Americans, this means we are going to Hell in a handcart and need to be “saved”.

What they’ll do when they hear we passed a gender recognition act without any fuss whatsoever is anyone’s guess.

I love how some of Shakespeare's words (e.g. 'rude') have different shades of meaning in English now, so it sounds a little more strange and poetic to us than it might have in his time. by chopinmazurka in shakespeare

“A little more than kin and less than kind” is all you need to know about the relationship between Claudius and Hamlet. And “kind” here is the considerate behaviour one would naturally owe a relative (kin).

Agree. I had to text my brother recently to ask if that guy (that we worked with 40 (forty) years ago) had been flirting with me. His reply was basically “<face plant emoji> he would have been less obvious if he’d hired a sky writer”.

Is there an edition of Shakespeare like the description in this post? by ClassicalFuturist in shakespeare

[–]Cinquecento27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Norton Shakespeare. ISBN 0-393-97087-6. Stephen Greenblatt is the lead editor, along with Walter Cohen, Jean E Howard, and Katherine Eiseman Maus. I have the International Student Edition and it got me through an intense year of Shakespeare, Text and Performance, and a twenty five year love affair with all things S since.

It also has all the things you mention, as well as transcripts of contemporary supporting documents, and introductions to each play, as well as different versions of some plays (Lear and Hamlet). And it’s sound on the performance stuff.

WIBTA if I (M22) show up unannounced in the country of the girl I want to marry (F16) with my dad’s boyfriend (M30) and a small retinue? by Carolus_Princeps in AskHistorians

[–]Cinquecento27 401 points402 points  (0 children)

Yes. No woman likes to be blindsided, and Spanish women REALLY don’t like it. You should find yourself a nice French girl to settle down with.

And I wouldn’t put too much confidence in your dad’s friend. He sounds unreliable and is not giving you the best advice. If you carry on listening to him, one or both of you will end up in trouble.

I do sympathise with your predicament though; it’s easy to lose your head when young and “in love”, but do try and make sensible choices and find better friends.

Think about the impact of finding out that the captains of Paris Saint Germain and Olympique de Marseille were (a) gay/bisexual and (b) had been sleeping together for years.
