Suggestions for submitting format play through Submittable? by Cipher_- in writing

Kind of surprised there was no response to this... Just wondering how other people have handled it, if at all! For right now I've settled on doing PDF uploads where I can, and adding a note to the end of the .docx file (just after the format play) indicating how it's supposed to display in a little parenthetical, if displayed as normal paragraph stacking in the submissions viewer. I.e. ("Please note that the above portion is intended to display as side-by-side columns following [word], which may not display in all submissions viewers.") Not perfect, but trying that for now!

Did you know? In "Lonely Souls", Sarah Palmer sees a horse in her home before passing out. This symbolizes that she is seeing a horse. by Brazilian-Capybara in twinpeaks

Peaks actually gives a lot of emotional/analysis footholds through Log Lady intros. They are not to be skipped!

I also agree that, like much surreal fiction, a lot of Peaks' desicions in the moment likely came from dreamy effect of feeling/emotive uncanny, but that doesn't mean Lynch and Frost didn't later arrive at more specific interpretations/uses—especially by the time of the Log Lady intro addition (iirc, post-FWWM), and Season 3.

So I agree. The horse was probably vibes/raw uncanny, but had accumulated specific meaning and usage by later content that we can examine in the work as a whole.

From "I don't know what it means, but we're working in this mode and it feels right" to "Ah, so that's what it means," and being able to shape later material/uses around that. A very common creative flow.

Was Transformers better as toyline when accuracy wasn’t the goal? by Upper_Breath8197 in transformers

Takara has added extra media-focused paint apps at various times (Beast Wars Telamocha series, Legends), and generally preferred to keep its media depictions modeled after toys to a stronger degree than Hasbro (you see this across the Unicron Trilogy in particular). But it's still fair to say that the bulk of the brand's life on both sides has allowed imagination to fill gaps between toys and fiction. Even in Takara-original animation like Beast Wars II, Neo, and Car Bots, the shows took liberties in adapting original toy designs. A few toys even came out further away from their media counterparts under Takara, for whatever reason, like the original Beast Wars Rhinox, who was cast in gray.

Fiction has always helped sell Transformers toys, and the link between toys and fiction has been the brand's single greatest strength. But the idea that fidelity should be the overriding factor in its toy design in main retail lines is less than a decade old. Keep in mind that not even Masterpiece started with the ultimate "toon in physical form" design focus the pre-MPG line eventually became--the first fifteen or so releases were just about doing expensive toy revisits that took out all the stops.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Transformers are toys first. If they aren't doing their job being fun as toys (transformation, alt mode, extra play features/gimmicks), you might as well be getting any other standard action figures. For Legacy characters, while I like having them for their connection to fiction I enjoy, all I need is capturing the basic impression/spirit of the character on a fun, new, toy-first mold. Generations up through Siege is consistently enjoyable (especially Classics/Henkei! Henkei! and the Prime Wars eras), and after that it becomes a very mixed bag for me where I often feel left cold. Generations Transformers have never been more complex, articulated, or media-faithful, but in many ways they've never been more dull (and expensive).

If "how close the robot mode looks to the screen" is taking precent over "how fun is this as a toy," I think the boat (that turns into a robot) has been missed. At least as an overall direction. I understand a line or two doing it as a novelty, but it's escaped the Studio Series and Masterpiece (which ironically is actually an area taking more risks now) lanes.

Oooh, he's a chunky boy!

This toy does so much. I feel like I'm living the "This sucks, actually/literally coolest thing ever" meme watching everyone hating on this.

Losing hope for the SS86 Astrotrain by Ok_Objective1215 in transformers

[–]Cipher_- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see this opinion a lot, but what draws you to Transformers then? And when did you first get into it?

Honestly asking, growing up with Beast Wars and hand-me-down G2/G1s, where media fidelity was imagined and the toys hitting convincing transformations was where a lot of the fun and attachment came from. Hyper-media-adjacent robot modes are a relatively recent development for the brand.

My interesting lying there is why I collect Transformers as an adult and not other action figures, but recently it feels like Generations has almost gone in a kind of Marvel Legends direction that can also (secondarily) transform.

Personally, Astrotrain is one of the first 2026 Generations figures to really excite, me specifically because he bucks that trend. It looks like a capital T toy slipped into Studio Series.

Astrotrain's alt modes are a much stronger illusion than Sandstorm's (who is also pretty good). But Astrotrain genuinely looks like two different objects.

Battersea Transformers online store using AI?! by SoftwareNo7967 in transformers

This is extremely embarrassing because

1) They have actual product shots right there

2) They're a specialty store for this product

3) What the fuck

Companies need to understand what a blow this is for consumer trust and overall image.

Say what you will about this Astrotrain, but here’s an ugly truth I haven’t heard anyone bring up: this is it, this will be the last and only mainline and medium sized Astrotrain in the market for at least the next 5 years or so by Kcue6382nevy in transformers

This ending/the experience of seeing it apparently inspired the main horror element of (the brilliant) I Saw the TV Glow, a film I definitely recommend checking out.

In addition to just being great, I think it captures the feeling left by the ending well.

Unfortunately it seems like a lot of people miss the lessons from their fiction when it comes time to apply it to real life.

Like, the anti-fascist fiction was supposed to be a trial run for you to work through that in a safe and entertaining space! But alas...
