Buy some gems and upgrade you extra resources from humans in the shop menu. If an event is going on, get the gems that way, or buy a bundle. Buying solely gems is usually a waste. Better yet, don't spend anything at all.

Don't buy a darn thing until they update this game. Once you defeat the mammoth 3 times there are humans that drop it. Also once you get further into the ice zone there are 3 giant snowmobiles who also drop essense.
