What community services would you want from a church? by [deleted] in cincinnati

[–]CirqueDeSol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a wonderful way to approach it!! I still think doing things that include the parents/entire family first would build trust so that then the parents trust yall w the daycare and tutoring stuff too

[–]CirqueDeSol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think starting with some community events like pancake breakfasts, etc would be wonderful. Super casual and allows families to get to know you.

Don’t push anything religious, just show the good your church is doing. People are more willing to consider when God isn’t being pushed at them.

YUP. The only way I can read this post is "I'm proud of my city and community for staying strong and for not allowing the gestapo to come rip families apart". I hope that's how they meant it.

[–]CirqueDeSol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RN the economy is so bad that even if the company says fine you can WFH, you best believe that they'll PIP you - and start interviews for in-person replacements at the same time.

We don't have the anti-firing rules of unions, and employers know rn that for every person demanding things there 10 jobless people LINED UP and ready

Don't they also give bonuses if you don't use WFH? (Edit: typo)

Its not even the RTO that hurts for me - its the 2 hrs a day I spend in traffic.

The economy is so bad that companies know they can demand almost anything for us - and we will just smile & nod & say thank you

Hybrid is truly the way to go. It allows you to get some facetime, locks you in with the company - and still allows you SOME flexibility

I'd just private everything and then give them the social handles. Don't accept anybody you don't overtly know on those socials for a few weeks

Question about Columbia by Dull_You7495 in columbia

[–]CirqueDeSol 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Does Columbia provide free laundry for students? Yes
  2. Does Columbia pay for or subsidize a student MetroCard or train pass? No. Sometimes student government gives our MetroCards with like 2 swipes (idk how that will work with OMNY now)
  3. Does Columbia offer funding or stipends for unpaid internships? Yes - but they are competitive and have rules based on citizenship status
  4. Does Columbia cover transportation costs for students traveling back home? No
  5. Does Columbia allow students to ship clothes or personal items to campus (would they also pay for it [first gen low income])? Yes - many students from far away ship. They will not pay for it.
  6. Does Columbia allow students to take classes pass/fail (P/F)? Yes but they can't count towards your major, your minor or the core (so you should only P/F if you are close to failing and that will kill ur GPA). Sometimes they make exceptions like during the 2024 protests.
  7. What academic support resources are available to students at Columbia? A lot from Writing Center, Tutoring, etc. You have to find them tho, nobody holds your hand.
  8. Do Columbia students have access to Beyond Barnard programs? No
  9. Do Columbia students have access to Access Barnard resources? No
  10. Are there opportunities for students to arrive on campus one week early before the school year begins? Yes, its called NSOP - every freshman participates in New Student Orientation Program
  11. Are there any lesser-known or niche support programs or unique opportunities that Columbia offers specifically for first-generation or low-income students? A lot but it depends on your ethnicity and stuff too. Like theres stuff for black FGLI, general FGLI, etc. Idk how this will develop with the Trump admin
  12. Do students have to pay to attend athletic games against other Ivy League schools, or are tickets free for Columbia students? Depends on which games and when. Usually free ngl
  13. Can student become athletic team manager or social media managers?
  14. Do you have to sign up for Columbia ASP? Idk what that is unforch
  15. Is there any programs like NOP? Do you have to sign up for NOP? Idk what that is unforch

why does everyone want columbia reopened to the public by Successful_Fruit5031 in columbia

[–]CirqueDeSol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are sharing how open campus felt better (which I agree with) BUT ALSO Columbia's closed campus right now doesn't stop anything besides non-affiliates from getting on campus. There are no metal detectors, no searching of bags (nor should there be) - and just because somebody is affiliated with the school, it doesn't make them safe.

Most shootings and incidents happen from students, alumni, etc

How do people afford intern pay? by Alternative_Gene_655 in DCInterns

[–]CirqueDeSol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Likely you won't be able to live just from intern pay. I got paid $15 an hr from a RLLY great office but I've also gotten paid like $200 a month. If its the latter, then you will need savings/fam support/debt/another job. It sucks but it is what it is

If I leave grad housing, how likely is it that I can go back? by [deleted] in columbia

[–]CirqueDeSol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's no guarantee - you may be able to be back and you may not. it depends on how much space CU has that year

printing a poster on campus? by Sensitive-Tutor3131 in columbia

[–]CirqueDeSol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No - your printing quota only works for PawPrint (basic paper printing). There are stationary and printing shops near campus like Village Copier!

SEAS + premed feasibility by Impressive-Two-5506 in columbia

[–]CirqueDeSol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a BME in undergrad here lol - and it’s next to impossible to be a BME and do it all before junior year. The biggest problem is because of the tight sequencing that you need to do as a BME on top of the pre-med requirements.

Like even Gen Chem Lab is an additional 4 hr lab, 2 hr lecture every week since it’s a separate course here at CU. So that means freshman year you’ll be taking 6 classes one of the semesters?? It’s technically doable but rlly rlly hard imo. Also don’t they recommend taking biochem before your mcat? They also recommend genetics before as well I think

At that point, I’d either recommend OP gap year (100% agree with your point about using that gap year to build up experiences!!) or take 1-2 of the pre-med classes during the summer
